Barriers and incentives for Italian paediatricians to become smoking cessation promoters: a GARD-Italy Demonstration Project

2020

Background: Paediatricians rarely devote any time to screening and treatment for parental tobacco use. The present project is part of a Global Alliance against Chronic Respiratory Diseases (GARD)-Italy Demonstration Project, aimed to increase the skills of primary care physicians and paediatricians as "promoter of smoking cessation". The aims of this study were: (I) to identify latent classes of barriers and incentives for smoking cessation counseling among paediatricians using latent class analysis (LCA); (II) to investigate risk factors for inclusion into the identified classes. Methods: In 2018, 1,500 Italian paediatricians were invited to complete an online survey on passive smoke expos…

Moving osimertinib to first-line: the right “strategy” in the chessboard of epidermal growth factor receptor-mutated non-small cell lung cancer?

2018

In the N Engl J Med , Soria and colleagues have recently reported the results of the phase III randomized FLAURA trial (1), comparing osimertinib with first generation epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) gefitinib or erlotinib in treatment-naive patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and activating EGFR -mutations.

2002

BACKGROUND Inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta-agonists are first-line agents for the treatment of patients with persisting bronchial asthma. Several lines of evidence have shown, that inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta-agonist have multiple synergisms both in vivo and in vitro, leading to improved clinical asthma control. METHODS A prospective, open, multi-centre study was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a fixed combination of inhaled Fluticasone (250 microgram BID) and Salmeterol (50 microgram BID) in a single inhaler device (Diskus). 3345 patients (48 % male, mean age 52 years, range 17 - 90 years) with mild to moderate asthma were treated over a perio…

Neuroprotective role of erythropoietin in spinal cord ischemic injury: Where have we been and where are we going?

2018

I read with great interest the study recently published by Yamanaka and colleagues,1 reporting the results of the study aimed to pharmacologically induce b common receptor (bcR) subunit upregulation before ischemia to optimize the neuroprotective effect of erythropoietin (EPO). The authors hypothesized that bcR subunit upregulation by diazoxide (DZ) before ischemia amplifies the neuroprotective effects of EPO in mice after spinal cord injury (SCI). They reported that that optimal bcR upregulation occurred at 36 hours after DZ administration, and the optimal DZ dosage for bcR induction was 20 mg/kg. Motor function at 48 hours after treatment was significantly better preserved in the DZ with …
