66  In vitro comparison of six raw materials on gastric ecosystem activity and acidity

2021

International audience; The great biochemical variability of the raw materials used in horse feeds can induce changes in gastric fermentation, and therefore affect gastric health through the resulting acidity of the bacterial end products. This in vitro trial compared the effect of 6 raw materials (BA: barley; WB: wheat bran; OA: oats; SM: sunflower meal; SB: sugar beet pulp; AL: alfalfa – Table 1) commonly used in horse feeds on gastric bacterial fermentation and buffering capacity. In 3 horses fed a mixture of the 6 raw materials 3h before sampling, gastric chyme was collected via a nasogastric tube and mixed. Bottles containing 1mL of the mixed gastric chymes, 50mL dilution medium and 1.…

Efficient Extraction of Olive Pulp and Stone Proteins by using an Enzyme-Assisted Method

2014

An efficient protein extraction protocol for proteins from olive pulp and stone by using enzymes was developed. For this purpose, different parameters that affect the extraction process, such as enzyme type and content, pH, and extraction temperature and time, were tested. The influence of these factors on protein recovery was examined using the standard Bradford assay, while the extracted proteins were characterized by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The best extraction conditions were achieved at pH 7.0 and 5% (v/v) Palatase® 20000 L (lipase) for pulp and Lecitase® Ultra (phospholipase) for stone proteins. The optimal extraction temperature and time w…

Effect of sodium borohydride and hydrogen peroxide pretreatments on soda pulping of sugar maple (Acer saccharum)

2021

For recovering value-added wood-based organic material prior to delignification, sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) pretreatments under alkaline conditions were performed before soda pulping of sugar maple (Acer saccharum) chips with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). In this investigation, it was determined whether the pulp yield could be increased by partly stabilizing the hemicelluloses by these pretreatments, and simultaneously obtains lower pulp kappa numbers. The results indicated that when aiming to the same kappa numbers (i.e., kappa numbers 14.3-20.5), roughly 3% higher pulp yield could be achieved if the chips were pretreated with alkaline 0.5% NaBH4 solutions, compared…

Over 30% of Patients with Splenic Marginal Zone Lymphoma Express Distinctive Antigen Receptors Utilizing a Single Immunoglogulin Variable Gene: Impli…

2010

Abstract Abstract 634 We systematically explored the immunoglobulin (IG) gene repertoire in 337 cases with splenic marginal-zone lymphoma (SMZL), by far the largest series yet. To resolve classification uncertainties, we included in the analysis only cases with a diagnosis of SMZL based on spleen histopathological findings or cases fulfilling the 2008 SBLG criteria (Matutes et al. Leukemia 2008). We here report that the IG heavy variable (IGHV) gene repertoire in SMZL is remarkably biased, with only three genes accounting for 45.8% of cases (IGHV1-2, 24.9%; IGHV4-34, 12.8%; IGHV3-23: 8.1%, respectively), significantly extending previous similar observations. Particularly for the IGHV1-2 gen…

Caddis larvae (Trichoptera, Hydropsychidae) indicate delaying recovery of a watercourse polluted by pulp and paper industry

2012

Abstract We studied ecotoxicological responses of aquatic insects to evaluate the recovery of a watercourse with a history of over 100 years as a recipient of pulp and paper mill effluents. The recovery of the water quality began in 1985 due to the improved technology, but ecotoxicological effects on biota have still been evident two decades later, as indicated by morphological abnormalities in tracheal gills of caddis larvae. We hypothesized that these abnormalities are related to organic contaminants, such as resin acids, alkylated PAHs and chlorinated organic compounds, released historically from the mills, and more recently via resuspension from the sediment. Samples were collected betw…

The effects of treated effluents on the intensity of papillomatosis and HSP70 expression in roach.

2008

Epidermal papillomatosis in fish has been proposed as an indicator of environmental stress but experimental evidence of connection between contaminants and papillomatosis in fish is scarce. We studied changes in the intensity of epidermal papillomatosis and the expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) in roach, Rutilus rutilus, exposed to treated pulp mill and municipal effluents. In male roach, the increase in papillomatosis intensity was higher in fish exposed to 15% than in fish exposed to 1.5% concentration of municipal effluent. No differences were observed in papillomatosis development in females, or in HSP70 expression. In all the experiments conducted, the increasing effect of ef…

Effects of primary- and secondary-treated bleached kraft mill effluents on the immune system and physiological parameters of roach.

2000

The present study was designed to examine, whether, effluents from a modern pulp and paper mill using elemental chlorine-free/total chlorine-free (ECF/TCF) bleaching, exert effects on the immune system of fish and, in addition, to relate these findings to physiological parameters known to be affected by bleached kraft-mill effluents (BKME). Roach (Rutilus rutilus) were exposed in laboratory conditions to primary- or secondary-treated effluent from a pulp and paper mill. In order to study their capability to respond to foreign antigens they were immunised with bovine gamma-globulin (BGG) prior to exposure. The number of anti-BGG antibody-secreting cells (ASC) and the number of immunoglobulin…

Microwave-assisted catalytic esterification of α-glucoisosaccharino-1,4-lactone with tall oil fatty acids

2016

Background: Carbohydrates-rich materials are partly degraded during alkaline kraft pulping into a complex mixture of aliphatic carboxylic acids consisting of α-glucoisosaccharinic acid as one of the main acids. On the other hand, crude tall oil, containing significant amounts fatty acids, is obtained as a by-product from kraft pulping. One interesting novel approach is to utilize chemically both these side-streams by producing renewable surfactants from aliphatic carboxylic acids and fatty acids via esterification. Results: In this paper, lauric (C12:0) and oleic (C18:1) acids as well as a mixture of tall oil fatty acids were esterified with α-glucoisosaccharino-1,4-lactone in a microwave-a…
