An overview of the methods used in the characterisation of natural organic matter (NOM) in relation to drinking water treatment
2010
Natural organic matter (NOM) is found in all surface, ground and soil waters. During recent decades, reports worldwide show a continuing increase in the color and NOM of the surface water, which has an adverse affect on drinking water purification. For several practical and hygienic reasons, the presence of NOM is undesirable in drinking water. Various technologies have been proposed for NOM removal with varying degrees of success. The properties and amount of NOM, however, can significantly affect the process efficiency. In order to improve and optimise these processes, the characterisation and quantification of NOM at different purification and treatment processes stages is important. It …
Risk factors for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity and mortality among solid cancer patients and impact of the disease on anticancer treat…
2020
Background Cancer patients are thought to have an increased risk of developing severe Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and of dying from the disease. In this work, predictive factors for COVID-19 severity and mortality in cancer patients were investigated. Patients and Methods In this large nationwide retro-prospective cohort study, we collected data on patients with solid tumours and COVID-19 diagnosed between March 1 and June 11, 2020. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality and COVID-19 severity, defined as admission to an intensive care unit (ICU) and/or mechanical ventilation and/or death, was one of the secondary endpoints. Results From April 4 to June 11, 2020, 1289…
Geographic distribution and inheritance of three cytoplasmic incompatibility types in Drosophila simulans.
1991
Abstract Wolbachia-like microorganisms have been implicated in unidirectional cytoplasmic incompatibility between strains of Drosophila simulans. Reduced egg eclosion occurs when females from uninfected strains (type W) are crossed with males from infected strains (type R). Here we characterize a third incompatibility type (type S) which is also correlated with the presence of Wolbachia-like microorganisms. Despite the fact that the symbionts cannot be morphologically distinguished, we observed complete bidirectional incompatibility between R and S strains. This indicates that the determinants of incompatibility are different in the two infected types. S/W incompatibility is unidirectional …
The pheromonal role of cuticular hydrocarbons in Drosophila melanogaster
1997
0265-9247 (Print) Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't Review; Pheromones play a crucial role in mate stimulation and discrimination. In the fruit fly Drosophila, the most abundant cuticular hydrocarbons act as sex pheromones during courtship behavior. There are several active molecules and they compose a sex- and species-specific pheromonal bouquet. Different species from the Drosophila melanogaster subgroup have adopted alternative systems of chemical mate recognition. Recent exploration of these interspecific variations, and of intraspecific variations, has led to the characterization of genes and to the mapping of structures that process the production and perception of chem…
Copurification of dihydroxyacetone-phosphate acyl-transferase and other peroxisomal proteins from liver of fenofibrate-treated rats.
1997
Dihydroxyacetone-phosphate acyl-transferase (DHAP-AT), a peroxisomal membrane-bound enzyme that catalyzes the first step of ether-glycerolipid synthesis, was purified from liver of rats treated with fenofibrate, a peroxisome proliferator. The protocol first included isolation of peroxisomes, their purification through a discontinuous gradient and solubilization of membranes in CHAPS. DHAP-AT was further purified by four chromatographic steps, namely low-pressure size-exclusion, cation-exchange, hydroxylapatite and chromatofocusing. The chromatofocusing step led to a 4000-fold increase in the specific activity of DHAP-AT with respect to the liver homogenate with a yield of about 0.2%. Trypsi…
A nuclear juvenile hormone-binding protein from larvae of Manduca sexta: a putative receptor for the metamorphic action of juvenile hormone
1994
0027-8424 (Print) Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't Research Support, U.S. Gov't, Non-P.H.S. Research Support, U.S. Gov't, P.H.S.; A 29-kDa nuclear juvenile hormone (JH)-binding protein from the epidermis of Manduca sexta larvae was purified by using the photoaffinity analog for JH II ([3H]epoxyhomofarnesyldiazoacetate) and partially sequenced. A 1.1-kb cDNA was isolated by using degenerate oligonucleotide primers for PCR based on these sequences. The cDNA encoded a 262-amino acid protein that showed no similarity with other known proteins, except for short stretches of the interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein, rhodopsin, and human nuclear protein p68. Recombinant bacu…
Hepatocyte growth factor/hepatopoietin A is expressed in fat-storing cells from rat liver but not myofibroblast-like cells derived from fat-storing c…
1992
Hepatocyte growth factor/hepatopoietin A is a complete mitogen for parenchymal liver cells, and its expression is increased as an early response to acute liver injury. To identify the liver cell population responsible for hepatocyte growth factor gene expression, we investigated tissue sections and isolated and purified cell fractions from normal rat liver by in situ and Northern blot hybridization. Hepatocyte growth factor transcripts were present in sinusoidal liver cells, which were preferentially located in the periportal parenchyma. Northern hybridization analysis of RNA isolated from purified liver cell fractions demonstrated that HGF messenger RNA is present only in fat-storing cells…
Plasma Kallikrein Contributes to Coagulation in the Absence of Factor XI by Activating Factor IX
2019
Objectives: FXIa (factor XIa) induces clot formation, and human congenital FXI deficiency protects against venous thromboembolism and stroke. In contrast, the role of FXI in hemostasis is rather small, especially compared with FIX deficiency. Little is known about the cause of the difference in phenotypes associated with FIX deficiency and FXI deficiency. We speculated that activation of FIX via the intrinsic coagulation is not solely dependent on FXI(a; activated FXI) and aimed at identifying an FXI-independent FIX activation pathway. Approach and Results: We observed that ellagic acid and long-chain polyphosphates activated the coagulation system in FXI-deficient plasma, as could be demo…
Separation of motor oils, oily wastes and hydrocarbons from contaminated water by sorption on chrome shavings
2007
In this paper, the ability of chrome shavings to remove motor oils, oily wastes and hydrocarbons from water has been studied. To determine amount of hydrocarbons sorbed on tanned wastes, a FT-NIR methodology was used and a multivariate calibration based on partial least squares (PLS) was employed for data treatment. The light density, porous tanned waste granules float on the surface of water and remove hydrocarbons and oil films. Wastes fibers from tannery industry have high sorption capacity. These tanned solid wastes are capable of absorbing many times their weight in oil or hydrocarbons (6.5-7.6g of oil and 6.3g of hydrocarbons per gram of chrome shavings). The removal efficiency of the…
On-chip purification via liquid immersion of arc-discharge synthesized multiwalled carbon nanotubes
2016
Arc-discharge synthesized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (AD-MWNT) have been proven to be of high quality, but their use is very limited due to difficulties in obtaining them in a clean and undamaged form. Here, we present a simple method that purifies raw AD-MWNT material in laboratory scale without damage, and that in principle can be scaled up. The method consists of depositing raw AD-MWNT material on a flat substrate and immersing the substrate slowly in water, whereby the surface tension force of the liquid–substrate contact line selectively sweeps away the larger amorphous carbon debris and leaves relatively clean MWNTs on the substrate. We demonstrate the utility of the method by prepa…
