Cruise tourism effetcts in the EU Islands' economies
2007
The theme of ‘the island condition and the characteristics of the EU territories surrounded by the sea has already been treated in a number of studies and in some recent research projects which have highlighted disparities, structural disadvantages and the presence of an economy which relies excessively on tourism. The aim of this paper is to show the incoming tourism or daily visitors’ flows generated by cruises in the EU islands, and to present the tourist expenditure matrix and the composition of the main expenses. The results seem to show that local economies generated by cruise daily visitors if combined with local productions, could have a good level of economic impact.
The adoption of the Euro by Romania
2013
As Romania has joined the European Union, the European currency must be adopted even though it may raise some problems regarding conversion, the impact on goods and services expenses on the interior market having a direct effect on the population and the national economy because we don’t know which the trajectory of the Euro will be. This paper takes a look at the advantages and disadvantages of the adoption of the unique currency in our country taking into account the time factor and the behaviour we must have regarding the Euro, establishing the issues we must take a close look at when the initial term of adoption must be respected.
SOME REFLECTIONS CONCERNING THE CURRENT FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEMS OF ROMANIA
2012
We address these issues, which we consider fundamental for Romania and not only, in a time when the impact of the economic crisis and of the IMF loan are far from being shaped conceptually and pragmatically, as solutions. We, unfortunately alone, express the view that this devastating phenomenon - the crisis - has two distinct components: a real one, induced by the errors that were made, especially in the banking system and a psychological one of fear, of the disorder, the arbitrary restriction of activity, etc., therefore generated out of ignorance, which in our opinion has the largest impact.Regarding the IMF loan, we want to warn that any borrowing for consumption has dramatic consequence…
Replacing short-haul flights with land-based transportation modes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions: the case of Finland
2019
Even though air travel often provides the fastest transport option, it also has the highest climate impact. Especially on long-haul trips, an aircraft usually represents the only feasible option. Nevertheless, aircraft are more often used on short-haul routes as well. It is the short-haul flights that produce the highest emissions per passenger. These are also the ones that could be replaced the most easily by land-based transportation modes. This study investigates the greenhouse gas emissions reduction potential of replacing short-haul flights with train, coach and car travel within Finland while also taking into account real travel times from door to door. Our results showed that replaci…
The impact of corporate social responsibility initiative on sustainable livelihood capitals of cocoa farmers in Ghana : a case study of cocoa livelih…
2015
The Cocoa Livelihood Programme (CLP), an initiative of corporate organizations in collaboration with the World Cocoa Foundation (WFC) in line with their corporate social responsibility (CSR), was introduced in Ghana by Solidaridad West Africa in the year 2009. This CSR initiative is to promote sustainable livelihoods of cocoa farmers. Qualitative research method of approach was used to examine the impact of the CLP on the livelihoods of participating cocoa farmers in the Ahafo Ano South District using the five capitals of the Sustainable Livelihood (SL) Framework. Two research questions were answered using thematic coding and analysis. The findings show that the cocoa livelihood programme (…
Assemblages of language, impact and research
2022
Three scholars—of languages and knowledges, of translation and writing, and of higher education—discuss societal impact as a higher education policy goal and the language ideologies that link with that discussion. We first criticize the problematic notion of impact that is common in higher education policy and discuss language and impact in terms of their assumed predictable, definable, and linear nature. From there, we move on to advocate for a multimodal, multidirectional, locally, and globally relevant impact that is focused on direct engagement, participatory approaches, support for promoting community activities, and introducing more epistemologically just understandings of the relatio…
Smart Terminal System of Systems’ Cyber Threat Impact Evaluation
2023
Systems of system-level thinking is required when the purpose is to develop a coherent understanding of the ecosystem where every user and system requirements are divided into specific parts. The smarter project, as a part of the Sea4value program of DIMECC, aims to develop harbor operations, including passenger and cargo transportation, in a way that port processes will improve, emissions will decrease, and overall security will enhance in smart ports. This paper describes cyber-attack impacts against the Smart terminal system of systems in the cyber realm by utilizing the MITRE ATTACK® framework to map the objectives of threat actors. The Smart Terminal system environment includes ICT, IC…
A lattice of participation: reflecting on examples of children's and young people's collective engagement in influencing social welfare policies and …
2014
The article introduces four case studies from Wales, France and Finland and explores the situated, intergenerational and dynamic nature of collective participation in child welfare settings. Collective participation is conceived of as a process of engagement in which children and young people have some influence over the initiation or direction of a project; and as seeking a product, or outcome. The case studies represent a range of forms of collective engagement and highlight some key resources which supported children's participation (communicative spaces, time, money, knowledge, social position, attitudes, social networks, institutional commitment, equipment, food and transport). Challen…
Acceleration Assessment During Mechanical Harvest of Grapes Using a non Commercial Instrumented Sphere
2017
The use of the harvesting machine for grape wine has the limit of the production of must coming out from the detachment of the berries that could reflect negatively on the quality of the final product. It depends on many factors including grapes variety, ripeness and frequency of the harvesting machine shakers. The shaking frequency generally adopted is the one that achieves the maximum harvest efficiency, that means high work capacity and low grape juice production. In this paper, the authors present a new system to measure the accelerations received by grapevine during mechanical harvest with the aim of evaluating the influence of the shaking frequency on the quality of the must obtained.…
