Swallowing evaluation with videofluoroscopy in the paediatric population
2017
Radiation protection in paediatrics age
2014
Radiological protection in paediatric population from medical imaging is a subject promoted by various international associations and it is becoming a main field of interest. Paediatric patients have a significant risk from ionizing radiation (IR) following X-ray examination (chest, abdomen and skeletal segments), multidetector CT (MDCT) and PET imaging [1]. Their greater damage’s risk is due to: growing tissues with elevated turnover and high radio sensitivity cellular, the high water content which amplifies the damage, the small body size that involves the exposure of large areas associated with the expectation of long- life makes possible the development of diseases resulting from geneti…
A prospective study of adverse drug reactions in hospitalized children
1999
Aims There are few publications of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) among paediatric patients, though ADR incidence is usually stated to be higher during the first year of life and in male patients. We have carried out a prospective study to assess the extent, pattern and profile risk for ADRs in hospitalized patients between 1 and 24 months of age. Methods An intensive events monitoring scheme was used. A total of 512 successive admissions to two medical paediatric wards (47 beds) were analysed. The hospital records were screened daily during two periods (summer, 105 days and winter, 99 days), and adverse clinical events observed were recorded. Results A total of 282 events were detected; of …
Hospital pedagogy. An unfinished business in the university training of education professionals
2019
Design of a Neural Network Model as a Decision Making Aid in Renal Transplant
2004
This paper presents the application of this new tool of data processing in the study of the problem that arises when a renal transplant is indicated for a paediatric patient. Its aim is the development and validation of a neural network based model which can predict the success of the transplant over the short, medium and long term, using pre-operative characteristics of the patient (recipient) and implant organ (donor). When compared to results of logistic regression, the results of the proposed model showed better performance. Once the model is obtained, it will be converted into a tool for predicting the efficiency of the transplant protocol in order to optimise the donor-recipient pair …
General anesthesia for oral and dental care in paediatric patients with special needs : a systematic review
2020
Background The objective of this study is to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the characteristics, needs and current situation of dental care for pediatric patients with special needs. Material and methods An exhaustive search for literature published until June 1, 2020. It was carried out using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane and EBSCO, with the following keywords: Oral Surgical Procedures and Dentistry, Operational and Anesthesia, General Y (Spanish[lang] or English[lang] ) Y (infant[MeSH] Or child[MeSH] Or adolescent[MeSH]). The research was carried out following the PRISMA research methodology. Results The most common indication for general anesthesia (GA) was t…
Neuromuscular disorders and non compaction: How much is the strength of the association and how can it be suspected?
2009
In many reports Finsterer and Stöllberger reported a strong association between non compaction of the left ventricle and neuromuscular disorders. In the same report the authors described a neurological involvement in more than 50%. Recently we published our personal experience, about 21 paediatric patients: only 4 patients (19%) showed a neuromuscular disorder, and only 1 of them showed an increased plasmatic level of CK, and in particular of MM isoform, with a normal level of CK-MB. None presented high levels of troponine. Through the experience of 3 centres we collected 61 patients affected by non compaction that performed a neurological control, and only 14 (21%) were affected by neuromu…
A C1-inhibitor rare mutation: Early diagnosis of hereditary angioedema in a paediatric patient
2013
Hereditary angioedema secondary to C1-inhibitor deficiency is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by a deficiency of C1 esterase inhibitor. An eight-year-old girl showed periorbital painless swelling, diagnosed as ethmoiditis. A craniofacial scan did not evidence a paranasal sinus involvement, C1INH levels were undetectable, with low C4 levels: 7.6 mg/dl and C1INH: <8.46 mg/dl. The genetic study identified a rare mutation of the C1INH gene. This clinical report is of relieve because paediatric cases described in literature are rare, did not presented a positive family history, and received a diagnosis after many attacks. Furthermore our girl received a prompt diagnosis of HAE at…
Unicystic ameloblastoma in 3 year old paediatric patient: a rare entity
2013
Unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) is a benign epithelial odontogenic tumor of the jaws that commonly occurs in 2nd and 3rd decade of life. In fact, this entity is rare in children under 12 years of age. It is characterised as a distinct variant of ameloblastoma, exhibiting a less aggressive behaviour and a lower rate of recurrence than solid conventional ameloblastoma. There are very few reported cases of UA occurring in children below five years of age. The purpose of this case report is to describe a case of UA involving the crown of an unerupted maxillary second premolar in a 3 year old girl. The pathogenesis, clinical appearance, radiographic presentation, histological findings and managemen…
Treatment of paediatric urolithiasis by extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy.
1988
Non-surgical removal of renal and ureteral stones has proven successful in adults. In this study, 21 paediatric patients have been treated with the first generation extracorporeal shock-wave lithotriptor and an additional 13 children with a second generation local shock-wave lithotriptor. A total of 47 stones was treated. Treatment-related complications such as colics (17%/18.8%) or fever (8.3%/6.2%) were minimal. Stone passage occurred in 93% and 100%, respectively of each group. Open surgery is still the treatment of choice for large staghorn calculi. Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy can be performed successfully in paediatric nephrolithiasis with stones of limited size.
