Opportunistic infections in immunosuppressed patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis: analysis by the Pharmachild Safety Adjudication Committee

2020

Background: To derive a list of opportunistic infections (OI) through the analysis of the juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) patients in the Pharmachild registry by an independent Safety Adjudication Committee (SAC). Methods: The SAC (3 pediatric rheumatologists and 2 pediatric infectious disease specialists) elaborated and approved by consensus a provisional list of OI for use in JIA. Through a 5 step-procedure, all the severe and serious infections, classified as per MedDRA dictionary and retrieved in the Pharmachild registry, were evaluated by the SAC by answering six questions and adjudicated with the agreement of 3/5 specialists. A final evidence-based list of OI resulted by matching …

Prevalence of adolescent physical activity-related injuries in sports, leisure time, and school: the National Physical Activity Behaviour Study for c…

2018

Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of adolescent physical activity-related injuries in sports club activities, leisure time physical activity and school-based physical activity. The secondary aim was to investigate the differences in the prevalence of physical activity -related injuries between years 2014 and 2016. In addition, we set out to study the associations between age, sex and the frequency of physical activity and injury prevalence. Methods This cross-sectional study is based on the National Physical Activity Behaviour Study for Children and Adolescents (LIITU in Finnish) conducted in years 2014 and 2016. The subjects completed an online question…

Measuring patient experiences in Fabry disease: validation of the Fabry-specific Pediatric Health and Pain Questionnaire (FPHPQ)

2012

Abstract Introduction Common symptoms for children with Anderson-Fabry Disease (FD) such as acroparaesthesia and gastrointestinal manifestations can only be objectively assessed in patients using a valid instrument. To date, no such instrument exists. Methods A preliminary 40-item measure of symptoms and experience with FD, the Fabry-specific Paediatric Health and Pain Questionnaire (FPHPQ) was developed, but lacked a formal assessment of its measurement properties. The FPHPQ was used in the Fabry Outcome Survey (FOS), a registry for all patients with a confirmed diagnosis of FD who are receiving agalsidase alfa, or are treatment naïve and who are managed by physicians participating in FOS.…

Fast-food consumption and body mass index in children and adolescents: an international cross-sectional study.

2014

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether reported fast-food consumption over the previous year is associated with higher childhood or adolescent body mass index (BMI). DESIGN: Secondary analysis from a multicentre, multicountry cross-sectional study (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Children (ISAAC) Phase Three). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Parents/guardians of children aged 6-7 completed questionnaires which included questions about their children's asthma and allergies, fast-food consumption, height and weight. Adolescents aged 13-14 completed the same questionnaire. The questionnaire asked 'In the past 12 months, how often on average did you (your child) eat fast-food/burgers?' The resp…

Prevalence of pressure ulcers in the paediatric population and in primary health care: An epidemiological study conducted in Spain.

2018

Abstract Aim The primary goal of this study was to estimate the prevalence of pressure ulcers in the paediatric population cared for in primary health care. Materials The data of this epidemiological study were extracted from the records of the 24 departments that attended to an approximate population of 1 million inhabitants between 0 and 18 years old from 2012 to 2015. The study included children requiring assistance to reduce pressure ulcer incidence. The paediatric population was categorised into neonates and infants (0–2 years), young child (3–6 years), child (7–12 years) and adolescents (13–18 years). The primary outcome was information on the prevalence of pressure ulcers. Secondary …

Usefulness of telemedicine for home ventilator-dependent children.

2018

Introduction Medical care for ventilator-dependent children must avoid hospital confinement, which is detrimental to the patient, their family and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. Our objective was to assess the role of telemedicine in facilitating early and permanent discharge of such patients to home care. Methods This was a prospective clinical study (2007–2017) in tracheotomised ventilator-dependent children. We used a Big Data Telemedicine home system (Medlinecare 2.1) from the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. Specialised home-nursing services were available. Clinical events were analysed using the Chi-square test (significance p < 0.05). Families subsequently completed a satisfaction…

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy: an Italian multi-institutional experience.

2006

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy: an Italian multi-institutional experience. Carretto E, Dall'Igna P, Alaggio R, Siracusa F, Granata C, Ferrari A, Cecchetto G. Source Division of Paediatric Surgery, Department of Paediatrics, University of Padua, Padua, Italy. Abstract BACKGROUND: Fibrous hamartoma (FH) of infancy is a benign mesenchymal tumor, occurring as a superficial mass. Complete excision is curative. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The clinical features and treatment results of 18 children with FH are described. RESULTS: Local excision was the most common procedure. Surgery was radical in 10 patients, with microscopic residual disease in 6; all of them are alive with no evidence of disease 2 to 4…

RAPP-children: A new tool for assessing quality of life in patients with asthma and rhinitis

2020

Background: RhinAsthma Patient Perspective (RAPP) is a short, validated questionnaire for assessing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adult patients with comorbid asthma and rhinitis, while a paediatric version is still not available. Objective: The current study aimed to develop and validate the RAPP-children questionnaire. Methods: RAPP-children was derived by combining RhinAsthma-children subscales into five unique items. At baseline (T0) and after 30 days (T1), 150 children (6-11 years) with comorbid asthma (predominantly intermittent or mild persistent) and rhinitis were given the following: RAPP-children, RhinAsthma-children, Paediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PA…

Burden of non-communicable diseases among adolescents aged 10-24 years in the EU, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Diseases S…

2022

Background: Disability and mortality burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have risen worldwide; however, the NCD burden among adolescents remains poorly described in the EU. Methods: Estimates were retrieved from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. Causes of NCDs were analysed at three different levels of the GBD 2019 hierarchy, for which mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) were extracted. Estimates, with the 95% uncertainty intervals (UI), were retrieved for EU Member States from 1990 to 2019, three age subgroups (10–14 years, 15–19 years, and 20–…
