Comparison of the analgesic efficacy of oral ketorolac versus intramuscular tramadol after third molar surgery: A parallel, double-blind, randomized,…

2015

Background Preemptive analgesia is considered an alternative for treating the postsurgical pain of third molar removal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the preemptive analgesic efficacy of oral ketorolac versus intramuscular tramadol after a mandibular third molar surgery. Material and Methods A parallel, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was carried out. Thirty patients were randomized into two treatment groups using a series of random numbers: Group A, oral ketorolac 10 mg plus intramuscular placebo (1 mL saline solution); or Group B, oral placebo (similar tablet to oral ketorolac) plus intramuscular tramadol 50 mg diluted in 1 mL saline solution. These tre…

Contribution of musculoskeletal pain to postural balance in community-dwelling people aged 75 years and older.

2010

Background. Balance is among the most important prerequisites for safe and independent mobility. Whether musculoskeletal pain is related to standing balance impairment has received limited attention. The aim of this study was to examine the association of musculoskeletal pain with the control of balance in older people. Methods. A total of 605 participants aged 75 years and older (mean age 80.4, 71 % women) were interviewed about presence and severity of musculoskeletal pain. Balance was measured by a force platform, and impaired balance was defined as a high sway velocity moment or inability to maintain semitandem standing. Results. Musculoskeletal pain was reported by 48% of the participa…

Choosing the nephrostomy size after percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

2011

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of nephrostomy tube size on perioperative outcomes of percutaneous nephrolithtotmy (PCNL). Methods: Forty-five well-matched patients with normal renal function were prospectively divided in two nonrandomized groups after uneventful PCNL (to receive either a 22-Fr, group 1 (n = 24 pts), or a 12-Fr nephrostomy tube, group 2 (n = 21 pts)). In all a balloon nephrostomy catheter with detachable funnel (Rüsch Teleflex, Germany) was used. A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for measuring the pain was administered 8 and 24 h after the procedure. Postoperative analgesics use (Ketoralac Tromethamine 30 mg), pre- and postoperative Hb, renal function and urinary leaks were reg…

Neuropathic pain. Redefinition and a grading system for clinical and research purposes.

2008

Pain usually results from activation of nociceptive afferents by actually or potentially tissue-damaging stimuli. Pain may also arise by activity generated within the nervous system without adequate stimulation of its peripheral sensory endings. For this type of pain, the International Association for the Study of Pain introduced the term neuropathic pain, defined as "pain initiated or caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction in the nervous system." While this definition has been useful in distinguishing some characteristics of neuropathic and nociceptive types of pain, it lacks defined boundaries. Since the sensitivity of the nociceptive system is modulated by its adequate activation (e.g…

Switching from Transdermal Drugs: An Observational "N of 1" Study of Fentanyl and Buprenorphine

2007

The aim of this study was to confirm that the concomitant presence of transdermal fentanyl (TTS FE) and buprenorphine (TTS BU) may be feasible without important consequences, using doses presumed to be equianalgesic. A prospective "N of 1" study was carried out in a sample of volunteers with cancer pain receiving stable doses of TTS FE or TTS BU, with adequate pain and symptom control. In the study design, each patient provided data before and after a switch from one opioid to the other and then back to the previous one. Sixteen patients receiving daily stable doses of 0.6 or 1.2 mg of TTS FE were switched to TTS BU using an FE-BU ratio of 0.6-0.8. After three days, the TTS BU patch was rem…

Dosing fentanyl buccal tablet for breakthrough cancer pain: dose titration versus proportional doses.

2012

Abstract OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of doses of fentanyl buccal tablet (FBT) proportional to doses of opioids used for background analgesia versus dose titration starting with the minimal dose for the management of breakthrough cancer pain (BTcP). METHODS: A total of 82 cancer patients with BTcP who were receiving strong opioids in doses of at least 60 mg of oral morphine equivalents and having acceptable background analgesia, were selected for a multicenter unblinded study. Forty-one patients were randomized to receive FBT in doses proportional to the daily opioid doses for four consecutive episodes of BTcP (group P). Forty-one patients underwe…

Repeatability and Reliability of the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foot Disease Activity Index in Spanish Patients: A Transcultural Adaptation

2021

Simple Summary The Rheumatoid Arthritis Foot Disease Activity Index (RADAI-F5) is the first questionnaire designed to check the level of involvement in the feet of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It is a validated and reliable five-question questionnaire in English. It is also considered suitable for clinical use. We aim was to translate and validate the Spanish version. The findings of this research suggest that is a valid, strong and trustworthy clinimetric tool that appropriately applies to the Spanish community and can be managed as a whole or in terms of its respective dimensions, such as arthritis activity in the foot, joint tenderness and swelling, and foot arthritis pain sub-sca…

Pharmacological properties of the methanol extract from Mentha suaveolens Ehrh.

2002

The present study analyses the pharmacological activity in in vivo and in vitro models of the methanol extract obtained from the leaves and steams of Menta suaveolens Ehrh. This extract lacked toxicity, but exhibited a central nervous system depressant action; an analgesic effect in models of chemical and mechanical stimulation suggesting the induction of a peripheral analgesic response. The extract also exhibited an antiinflammatory action inhibiting the rat paw oedema induced by carrageenin. Moreover, the in vitro studies showed a significant diminution in the contractile effects induced by histamine, serotonin and acetylcholine.

Intravenous morphine for management of cancer pain.

2010

Summary In recent years, a growing interest in palliative care and in routes of administration other than oral have prompted more aggressive measures to improve the efficacy of analgesic interventions in patients with difficult pain conditions. This review provides an overview of the use of intravenous morphine to control pain in patients with cancer. Intravenous morphine has been increasingly used in different clinical situations—including breakthrough pain, poor pain control with escalating doses of oral opioids, retitrating patients with acute pain, treating patients with long-standing poor pain control and unpredictable needs, and optimising opioid therapy to prevent incident pain assoc…
