In eastern Sicily, a series of highly organic-rich black shales occur as exotic blocks (~ 100 m across) floating in tectonized sediments (Argille Varicolori Unit containing olistoliths of Cretaceous-Palaeogene age). A 19-metre section, through one of these blocks near the town of Novara di Sicilia, includes cyclically bedded black shales, marlstones and claystones, which have been dated using planktonic foraminiferal and nannofossil biostratigraphy. On this basis, the section is assigned to the latest Cenomanian and clearly represents a manifestation of the Oceanic Anoxic Event characteristic of that interval. La monophylie du groupe est maintenant bien établie tant par les données morphologiques que moléculaires. De nos jours, quatre familles sont représentées par sept genres (dont cinq d'eau douce) et 35 espèces (dont 28 d'eau douce). Taxonomy and palaeobiogeography of the Cenozoic Euro-Mediterranean rissoid gastropod Galeodinopsis and its relationship with close genera

The investigation of the Late Paleogene to Late Neogene species of rissoid gastropod Galeodinopsis in the Euro-Mediterranean area has supported the hypothesis that this genus is an intermediate form between two well-known rissoids, Alvinia and Manzonia. We recognized four species of Galeodinopsis: G. biangulata, G. germanica sp. nov., G. semperi (new name for Rissoa duboisii), and G. tiberiana. The oldest (very Late Eocene/Oligocene) representatives of Galeodinopsis, G. biangulata, and G. semperi, share similar shell shape and microsculpture with Alvinia. This suggests that Galeodinopsis originated from some Eocene species related to Alvinia. The new species represents the first occurrence …

The Leiza palaeo-fault: Role and importance in the Upper Cretaceous sedimentation and palaeogeography of the Basque Pyrenees (Spain)

Abstract New analysis of the Upper Cretaceous deposits of the Central Depression, a syncline within the Basque Pyrenees, shows that this structure was a deep marine basin analogous to the regional flysch troughs. It was bounded by active faults, including the Leiza palaeo-fault, which sustained erosion of the partly subaerially exposed margins. The Leiza palaeo-fault and its western counterpart, the Kalamua palaeo-fault, are thought to constitute the former plate boundary between Iberia and Europe, and a westward continuation of the North Pyrenean Palaeo-Fault.

Geomorphological and geophysical investigations to study the landslide affecting the archaeological site of abakainon

In recent years, a detailed archeoseismological investigation has been carried out in the necropolis of Abakainon in order to identify traces of an ancient earthquake. Although the identification of seismic damage was undoubtedly attributed to the 1st century AD earthquake, it was hypothesised that the level of damaging observed in the necropolis, as well as the counter slope tilting of the tomb basements may have also caused by a seismo-induced landslide, which produced locally an amplification of the seismic shaking.
