Confronting blackface : Stancetaking in the Dutch Black Pete debate
2020
ecently, the Netherlands witnessed an agitated discussion over Black Pete, a blackface character associated with the Saint Nicholas festival. This paper analyzes a televised panel interview discussing a possible court ban of public Nicholas festivities, and demonstrates that participants not only disagree over the racist nature of the blackface character but also over the terms of the debate itself. Drawing on recent sociolinguistic work on stancetaking, it traces how panelists ‘laminate’ the interview’s participation framework by embedding their assessments of Black Pete in contrasting dialogical fields. Their stancetaking evokes opposing trajectories of earlier interactions and conjures u…
Puhutaanpa kielikoulutuksesta!
2015
Kieliverkosto järjesti helmikuussa 2015 neljällä paikkakunnalla tilaisuuden, jossa keskusteltiin kielikoulutuksen ajankohtaisista asioista. Tilaisuuksien tavoitteena oli näin eduskuntavaalien alla nostaa esiin kieliin liittyviä kysymyksiä laajemman koulutuspoliittisen keskustelun rinnalle. Verkoston teemavuoden mukaisesti keskustelua viriteltiin erityisesti talouden näkökulmasta. Valtakunnallisten kysymysten lisäksi pureuduttiin myös alueellisiin tarpeisiin. Keskustelua syntyi muun muassa koulujen kieltenopetuksesta, toisen asteen ja korkeakoulutuksen kieliopinnoista, työelämän kielitaitotarpeista, kaksikielisyydestä, kielikylpyopetuksesta, maahanmuuttajien kielikoulutuksesta ja ruotsin kie…

Dalībnieki pēc nejaušības principa tiks iedalīti četrās grupās: 1) aerobs treniņš + vidējas intensitātes pretestības treniņš (VIPT), 2) aerobs treniņš + augstas intensitātes pretestības treniņš (AIPT), 3) aeroba treniņa grupa (AT), kontroles grupa (K).
Diplomdarbs sastāv no 4 nodaļām.
Carbon emissions by Ssouth american companies: driving factors for reporting decisions and emissions reduction
2018
In the last decade, companies have started to disclose information on carbon emissions. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to look into this phenomenon in South America, which is a very important geographical area regarding climate change because of the local nature and developing economies. This paper explores the relationships between some corporate variables and two important decisions: (i) whether to report carbon emissions, and (ii) the impact on the evolution of carbon emissions. Logit and linear panel data models are used to determine the driving factors for decisions (i) and (ii). Our results show that regarding the carbon reporting decision, a company&rsquo

Temperature effects explain continental scale distribution of cyanobacterial toxins
2018
Insight into how environmental change determines the production and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins is necessary for risk assessment. Management guidelines currently focus on hepatotoxins (microcystins). Increasing attention is given to other classes, such as neurotoxins (e.g., anatoxin-a) and cytotoxins (e.g., cylindrospermopsin) due to their potency. Most studies examine the relationship between individual toxin variants and environmental factors, such as nutrients, temperature and light. In summer 2015, we collected samples across Europe to investigate the effect of nutrient and temperature gradients on the variability of toxin production at a continental scale. Direct and indirect…
Cytogenetical test to predict the vigour potential in Brassica seeds under long-term storage.
2013
Preservation of intraspecific diversity in seed banks is a common strategy to frontier the loss of biodi- versity, however long-term storage inevitably results in the loss of a certain percentage of seeds, there- fore causing the genetic erosion of a seed collection. For this reason seed quality monitoring is of out- standing importance to ensure that the regenerated genetic material is representative of the endemic nat- ural diversity once reintroduced in the environment, as well as to preserve the genetic biodiversity of species economically relevant for modern agriculture. Ageing amplification tests, in which seeds under- go osmotic stresses, enable to detect little differences in the vi…
Strategic agility explanations for managing franchising expansion during economic cycles
2017
Purpose This paper aims to demonstrate how franchising firms can manage system expansion by weathering the economic effects of a location (i.e. country-level economic cycles) by shifting their resources. Design/methodology/approach The authors use a comprehensive database of 151 US hybrid franchising organizations, including observations for the years between 2001 and 2008. Data analysis is conducted with count model panel data with a Poisson distribution. Findings The model reveals a curvilinear U-shaped relationship between location (i.e. economic cycles) and franchising expansion. Originality/value This study contributes to competitiveness literature by showing how franchising firms res…
