Current role of the chimney technique in the treatment of complex abdominal aortic pathologies: A position paper from the PERICLES Registry investiga…

2020

Historically, chimney/snorkel endovascular aortic repair (Ch-EVAR) emerged as a rescue technique to revascularize and/or preserve inadvertently covered critical branch vessels during infrarenal aortic endografting. Next, in its evolutionary path, Ch-EVAR offered a viable treatment option for complex aortic repair, and particularly in situations where fenestrated/ branched EVAR was not a therapeutic option due to the lack of availability and/or anatomical constraints. In this context, this technique offered distinct advantages such as off-the-shelf availability, straightforward implantation techniques, and lower resource use-intensity enabling performance by a large number of operators manag…

Diagnosis and treatment of xerosis cutis - a position paper.

2019

Background and rationale Xerosis cutis (also referred to as xeroderma, dry skin, asteatosis) affects more than 10 million individuals in Germany. It is among the most common dermatological diagnoses and a cardinal symptom of many dermatological, internal and neurological diseases. Even though it has been established that basic skin care plays a significant role in the management of patients with xerosis cutis, there are as yet no evidence-based algorithms for diagnosis and treatment. Objective The present position paper provides physicians across all specialties with a practical, symptom-based approach to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of xerosis cutis. Methods Within a structured …

Safety and efficacy of biodegradable polymer-coated thin strut sirolimus-eluting stent vs. durable polymer-coated everolimus-eluting stent in patient…

2018

Introduction The biodegradable polymer drug-eluting stents were developed to improve vascular healing. However, further data are needed to confirm the safety and efficacy of these stents in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Aim We sought to determine the 1-year clinical follow-up in patients with AMI treated with a thin strut biodegradable polymer-coated sirolimus-eluting stent (BP-SES) versus a durable coating everolimus-eluting stent (DP-EES). Material and methods We analyzed patients with AMI (STEMI and NSTEMI) treated with either a BP-SES (ALEX, Balton, Poland, n = 886) or DP-EES (XIENCE, Abbott, USA, n = 1054) with available 1-year clinical follow-up using propensity sco…

Machine Perfusions in Liver Transplantation: The Evidence‐Based Position Paper of the Italian Society of Organ and Tissue Transplantation

2020

The use of machine perfusion (MP) in liver transplantation (LT) is spreading worldwide. However, its efficacy has not been demonstrated, and its proper clinical use has far to go to be widely implemented. The Società Italiana Trapianti d’Organo (SITO) promoted the development of an evidence-based position paper. A 3-step approach has been adopted to develop this position paper. First, SITO appointed a chair and a cochair who then assembled a working group with specific experience of MP in LT. The Guideline Development Group framed the clinical questions into a patient, intervention, control, and outcome (PICO) format, extracted and analyzed the available literature, ranked the quality of th…

Horizontal and Vertical Reconstruction of the Severely Resorbed Maxillary Jaw Using Subantral Augmentation and a Novel Tenting Technique with Bone fr…

2013

Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of using the lateral wall bone in sinus lifting two-dimensional reconstruction on bone augmentation.Patients and Methods Ten patients affected by class V or VI maxillary atrophy with less than 3 mm of residual horizontal ridge were selected. Using a piezo-ultrasonic surgery tip bony lateral wall was cut. To expose native bone to the bone graft, multiple perforations, made through the cortical plate of the recipient site with a round bur. Once the bony buccal wall was adjusted it was fixed away from the ridge with two 1.5 x 13 mm bone fixation screws. Deficiencies created between the bony buccal wall and the ridge was filled with a mineral…

Nutritional disorders in the proposed 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases: feedback from a survey of stakeholders.

2016

AbstractObjectiveTo receive stakeholders’ feedback on the new structure of the Nutritional Disorders section of the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD-11).DesignA twenty-five-item survey questionnaire on the ICD-11 Nutritional Disorders section was developed and sent out via email. The international online survey investigated participants’ current use of the ICD and their opinion of the new structure being proposed for ICD-11. The LimeSurvey® software was used to conduct the survey. Summary statistical analyses were performed using the survey tool.SettingWorldwide.SubjectsIndividuals subscribed to the mailing list of the WHO Department of Nutrition for Health and D…

Long-term oral anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation in low and middle income countries.

2021

With increasing life-expectancy and changing demographics, non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) is currently the most common indication for long-term oral anticoagulation (OAC) in low and middle income countries (LMICs). Due to a decreasing trend in the prevalence of rheumatic heart disease (RHD), valve disease as a primary cause of AF now constitutes a small fraction of all people with AF. Moreover, emerging data also indicate that, patients with significant valve disease and AF may have a risk of stroke similar to, if not lower than, those with non-valvular AF. Previous trials of anticoagulation for AF excluded people from LMICs partly because valvular AF constituted a large proportion o…

The multidisciplinary management of gastro-oesophageal junction tumours

2016

Abstract Background and scope The management of GOJ cancers remains controversial and may vary between countries. Evidence-based attitudes and guidelines are not easy to elaborate since most of the trials and studies reported mixed cases of oesophageal (both adenocarcinoma and squamous cell tumours), GOJ and gastric cancers. The aim of this expert discussion and position paper is to elaborate practical recommendations that integrate evidence-reported literature and experience-based attitude covering all clinical aspects of GOJ cancer across different specialities and countries in Europe. Methodology Opinion leaders, selected on scientific merit were asked to answer to a prepared set of ques…

Process Evaluation of an eHealth Intervention (Food4toddlers) to Improve Toddlers' Diet : Randomized Controlled Trial

2020

Background Parents seek trustworthy information online to promote healthy eating for their toddlers. Such information must be perceived as relevant and easy to implement and use. Objective The objectives of this study were to conduct a process evaluation of the electronic health (eHealth) intervention (Food4toddlers) targeting food environment, parental feeding practices, and toddlers’ diet and to examine possible differences in these areas according to education and family composition. Methods A 2-armed randomized controlled trial, including 298 parent–toddler dyads from Norway, was conducted in 2017. In total, 148 parents in the intervention group received access to an intervention websi…

What the interventionalist should know about renal denervation in hypertensive patients: a position paper by the ESH WG on the interventional treatme…

2014

Percutaneous catheter-based transluminal renal denervation (RDN) has emerged as a new approach to achieve sustained blood pressure reduction in patients with drug-resistant hypertension. Experts from ESH and ESC in their recently released position papers and consensus document have summarised the current evidence, unmet needs and practical recommendations for the application of this therapeutic strategy in clinical practice. Experts of the ESH Working Group for the interventional treatment of hypertension prepared this position paper in order to provide interventionalists with guidance through the procedure of RDN. Given that there is no established intraprocedural control of ablation succe…
