Foucault and Agamben on Augustine, Paradise and the Politics of Human Nature
2023
This article focuses on Foucault’s and Agamben’s readings of Augustine’s account of human nature and original sin. Foucault’s analysis of Augustine’s account of sexual acts in paradise, subordinated to will and devoid of lust, highlights the way it constitutes the model for the married couple, whose sexual acts are only acceptable if diverted by the will away from desire and towards the tasks of procreation. While Agamben rejects Augustine’s doctrine of original sin and reclaims paradise as the original homeland of humanity, his reappropriation of paradise remains conditioned by our turn towards our true nature, from which we have been estranged by sin. Agamben’s politics of reclaiming par…

Papa Pio XII nella storia della Radiologia
2019

The People Who Occupied The Fallen Angels' Chairs in Heaven: A Reiterated Idea in the Fifteenth Century, the Valencian Golden Age
2018
Johannes Ludovicus Vives (1493-1540) repeatedly used the symbolic image of humans occupying the fallen angels' chairs in heaven. In fact, the purpose of the creation of human beings seemed to be to occupy those empty chairs in paradise. This article focuses on the recurrent presence of that idea in the Valencian literature of the fifteenth century. It was a thought that was widely accepted even among people of a limited educational background. This paper supports the idea that Vives was the scholar who took this well-known belief from his homeland and introduced his Erasmian circle to it. That process of dissemination is described and explained by quoting some fragments of the most importan…
Mickiewiczowskie „miejsce” schronienia
2019
Mythical Geographies
2018
This chapter explores the anthropological roots of Lost Paradise, which pivoted the expansion of Western civilization over centuries. tourism has evolved into many forms and practices that escape from water and fire, or the sand, but originally thermals were fertile grounds for the expansion and consolidation of modern tourism. This happens because of two main reasons, civilization whatever its origin symbolizes water as the most important resource for its production and expansion. Secondly, mythologies across cultures and times appeal to an “Eden” where water plays a crucial role as configurator of social order. For that reason, not surprisingly, in making tourism we need from reproaching …
