The Parallel Structures Model and the weakening of implosive /s/ in Spanish
2020

2018
Individual Variability and Average Reliability in Parallel Networks of Heterogeneous Biological and Artificial Nanostructures
2013
We simulate the collective electrical response of heterogeneous ensembles of biological and artificial nanostructures whose individual threshold potentials show a significant variability. This problem is of current interest because nanotechnology is bound to produce nanostructures with a significant experimental variability in their individual physical properties. This diversity is also present in biological systems that are however able to process information efficiently. The nanostructures considered are the ion channels of biological membranes, nanowire field-effect transistors, and metallic nanoparticle-based single electron transistors. These systems are simulated with canonical models…
A simple algorithm to evaluate the local symmetry at each point of a closed contour
1995
In this work, contour symmetry is evaluated as a numeric feature for each point of the shape outline, using only the positions of a local vicinity of points. A measure is defined, named Local Symmetric Deficiency (LSD), so that the lower this quantity is, the higher the symmetry will be in the local region considered. This approach is simpler than related previous ones both from a conceptual point of view and for its implementation, since it is reduced just to a suitable manipulation of the Freeman chain code of the curve studied. Its computational cost is very low and it has the advantages of a parallel algorithm, since values for LSD can be computed for each point independently.
On Fine and Wilf's theorem for bidimensional words
2003
AbstractGeneralizations of Fine and Wilf's Periodicity Theorem are obtained for the case of bidimensional words using geometric arguments. The domains considered constitute a large class of convex subsets of R2 which include most parallelograms. A complete discussion is provided for the parallelogram case.
Quantum Queries on Permutations
2015
K. Iwama and R. Freivalds considered query algorithms where the black box contains a permutation. Since then several authors have compared quantum and deterministic query algorithms for permutations. It turns out that the case of \(n\)-permutations where \(n\) is an odd number is difficult. There was no example of a permutation problem where quantization can save half of the queries for \((2m+1)\)-permutations if \(m\ge 2\). Even for \((2m)\)-permutations with \(m\ge 2\), the best proved advantage of quantum query algorithms is the result by Iwama/Freivalds where the quantum query complexity is \(m\) but the deterministic query complexity is \((2m-1)\). We present a group of \(5\)-permutati…
Spin doctoring in British and German election campaigns: How the press is being confronted with a new quality of political PR
2000
The 1997 British and 1998 German general elections showed striking parallels and distinctive differences in the way Blair and Schroeder delivered their campaigns and defeated long-sitting conservative governments. Of vital importance was a new quality of political public relations called `spin doctoring'. In this, the British Labour Party served as a kind of role model for the German Social Democratic Party. This article traces the origins and different meanings of `spin doctoring' in both countries, distinguishes between media-related and non-media-related spin activities and analyses it against the background of the specific national contexts. The aims and methods of political spin doctor…
Exploring parallel capabilities of an innovative numerical method for recovering image velocity vectors field
2010
In this paper an efficient method devoted to estimate the velocity vectors field is investigated. The method is based on a quasi-interpolant operator and involves a large amount of computation. The operations characterizing the computational scheme are ideal for parallel processing because they are local, regular and repetitive. Therefore, the spatial parallelism of the process is studied to rapidly proceed in the computation on distributed multiprocessor systems. The process has shown to be synchronous, with good task balancing and requiring a small amount of data transfer.
Computation of Yvon-Villarceau circles on Dupin cyclides and construction of circular edge right triangles on tori and Dupin cyclides
2014
Ring Dupin cyclides are non-spherical algebraic surfaces of degree four that can be defined as the image by inversion of a ring torus. They are interesting in geometric modeling because: (1) they have several families of circles embedded on them: parallel, meridian, and Yvon-Villarceau circles, and (2) they are characterized by one parametric equation and two equivalent implicit ones, allowing for better flexibility and easiness of use by adopting one representation or the other, according to the best suitability for a particular application. These facts motivate the construction of circular edge triangles lying on Dupin cyclides and exhibiting the aforementioned properties. Our first contr…
