PenRed: An extensible and parallel Monte-Carlo framework for radiation transport based on PENELOPE

2021

Monte Carlo methods provide detailed and accurate results for radiation transport simulations. Unfortunately, the high computational cost of these methods limits its usage in real-time applications. Moreover, existing computer codes do not provide a methodology for adapting these kind of simulations to specific problems without advanced knowledge of the corresponding code system, and this restricts their applicability. To help solve these current limitations, we present PenRed, a general-purpose, stand-alone, extensible and modular framework code based on PENELOPE for parallel Monte Carlo simulations of electron-photon transport through matter. It has been implemented in C++ programming lan…

Using Parallel Corpora for Translation Activities in L2 Medical English Undergraduate Teaching, with Specific Reference to Italian Sports Sciences Co…

2021

English is the international language of science and, as such, it is also the international language of medicine. L2 English undergraduates do not generally have particular difficulties in translating from English into their mother tongue; by contrast, they do not perform very well when asked to translate into English. The aim of this report is to show the results of a study obtained by using parallel corpora in scientific English classes in the Italian sports sciences study course of the University of Palermo. The students were provided with a corpus of English texts taken from a well-known medical text with pedagogical purposes, and their corresponding Italian translations, which were car…

Minimizing weighted earliness-tardiness on parallel machines using hybrid metaheuristics

2015

We consider the problem of scheduling a set of jobs on a set of identical parallel machines where the objective is to minimize the total weighted earliness and tardiness penalties with respect to a common due date. We propose a hybrid heuristic algorithm for constructing good solutions, combining priority rules for assigning jobs to machines and a local search with exact procedures for solving the one-machine subproblems. These solutions are then used in two metaheuristic frameworks, Path Relinking and Scatter Search, to obtain high quality solutions for the problem. The algorithms are tested on a large number of test instances to assess the efficiency of the proposed strategies. The result…

The veridical perception of object temperature with varying skin temperature.

1988

The effect of skin-adaptation temperature on object-temperature perception was investigated, using the method of dichiric matching, in an attempt to determine whether veridical perception of physical object temperature occurs in human subjects. Observers were presented with a test temperature on one hand and required to find a matching temperature, that is, one that produced the same sensation, on the other, differently adapted, hand. Using equality of test and matching temperatures as a criterion of veridical perception, it was found that the latter improves with ΔT, the difference between object temperature and skin-adaptation temperature. It is postulated that when ΔT is close to zero, v…

Dynamic interface for machine vision systems

2002

Iconic programming intends to provide expressive tools to implement, to debug, and to execute programs. For this purpose, visual languages need pictorial constructs and metaphors to guide the design of algorithms in interactive fashion. In the paper a new class of dynamic visual interfaces, named DIVA (Dynamic Interface for Visual Applications), is introduced, its properties are described, and an application to visual compilers in a multi-processors system dedicated to image analysis is given. Moreover, a formal definition of dynamic icon (DI) is also given.

Neuropharmacology of vision in goldfish: A review

2009

AbstractThe goldfish is one of the few animals exceptionally well analyzed in behavioral experiments and also in electrophysiological and neuroanatomical investigations of the retina. To get insight into the functional organization of the retina we studied color vision, motion detection and temporal resolution before and after intra-ocular injection of neuropharmaca with known effects on retinal neurons. Bicuculline, strychnine, curare, atropine, and dopamine D1- and D2-receptor antagonists were used. The results reviewed here indicate separate and parallel processing of L-cone contribution to different visual functions, and the influence of several neurotransmitters (dopamine, acetylcholin…

Asynchronous Occlusion Culling on Heterogeneous PC Clusters for Distributed 3D Scenes

2012

We present a parallel rendering system for heterogeneous PC clusters to visualize massive models. One single, powerful visualization node is supported by a group of backend nodes with weak graphics performance. While the visualization node renders the visible objects, the backend nodes asynchronously perform visibility tests and supply the front end with visible scene objects. The visualization node stores only currently visible objects in its memory, while the scene is distributed among the backend nodes’ memory without redundancy. To efficiently compute the occlusion tests in spite of that each backend node stores only a fraction of the original geometry, we complete the scene by adding h…

Parallel simulation of dense two-dimensional polymer systems

1990

Abstract We present a parallel algorithm for the simulation of dense lattice polymer systems. The algorithm will be given for a two-dimensional system although the algorithm can be generalized to higher dimensions. We discuss timing results and applications.

Combining Mendonça-Cipolla self-calibration and scene constraints

2011

International audience; In this paper, we propose a method that combines plane parallelism and the Mendonça/Cipolla self-calibration constraints. In our method each pair of images is treated independently and can therefore use a different pair of parallel planes not necessarily visible in the other views. While, for each pair of images, constraints on the singular values of the essential matrix provide two algebraic constraints on the intrinsic parameters, those we derive from plane parallelism have the advantage of providing two additional ones making the calibration of a no-skew camera possible from two images only.

La influencia de Pierre Bayle en la construcción de la segunda antinomia de la razón pura

2020

This paper aims to establish precisely the scope of Pierre Bayle’s influence on the construction of Kant’s second antinomy of pure reason, since there is a remarkable parallelism between this second cosmological conflict and the argument against extension of the article “Zeno of Elea” of Bayle’s Dictionary. It is argued that Bayle, employing the skeptical method in metaphysical research, has a major influence on the construction of the main arguments of the second antinomy and sets a precedent for its logical solution.
