Development of internalizing symptoms during adolescence in three countries: the role of temperament and parenting behaviors

AbstractThis longitudinal study examined the unique and joint effects of early adolescent temperament and parenting in predicting the development of adolescent internalizing symptoms in a cross-cultural sample. The role of parental affection and psychological control in adolescent athletes' symptoms of school and sport burnout during the transition to upper …
2018
Abstract Introduction The transition from compulsory school to upper secondary school is a challenging period for adolescents. Especially challenging it can be for adolescents who aim to integrate two domains of achievement, such as an athletic career and academic education. The pressure from two intertwined achievement domains may make student-athletes vulnerable to symptoms of burnout. The study examined the role of mothers' and fathers’ affection and psychological control as possible risk or protective factors in the symptoms of school and sport burnout among 15–16 year olds adolescent athletes in Finland. Methods The adolescents’ (n = 391) burnout symptoms in the two domains were measur…
Attachment Styles and Well-Being in Adolescents: How Does Emotional Development Affect This Relationship?

Attachment relationships with parents, as well as emotional competencies, are protective factors against stress and other physical, mental, and relational health symptoms in adolescence. There were 1276 Spanish adolescents between 12 and 15 years old (M = 13.48
Self and Nature: Parental Socialization, Self-Esteem, and Environmental Values in Spanish Adolescents
2020
Emergent research seriously questions the use of parental strictness as the best parenting strategy in all cultural contexts. The present paper aims to examine parents&rsquo

The relationship between parenting and the economic orientation and behavior of Norwegian adolescents.
2013
Little is known about the economic socialization of children and adolescents and the role of parents in this process. The authors' purpose was to explore the role of parenting in the intergenerational transfer of economic orientation and economic behavior. More specifically, they studied the link between four parenting dimensions (parental warmth-responsiveness, behavioral control, psychological control, autonomy granting), three parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, and neglectful) and adolescents' conscientiousness, future time perspective, and present hedonistic orientation. The authors also studied the relationships between these dispositions and the adolescents' spending pref…
