Development and validation of the Brief Parental Burnout Scale (BPBS).

2021

Since parental burnout can have detrimental consequences for parents, couples, and children, easy-to-use, reliable, and valid practical tools for the early detection of parental burnout are required. We developed and validated a brief scale to identify burned-out parents and parents at burnout risk. In Study 1, we developed the 5-item Brief Parental Burnout scale (BPBs) based on the gold standard measure of parental burnout, the Parental Burnout Assessment (PBA). We applied Item Response Theory Graded Response Model (GRM) analyses on the data of 1,725 Finnish parents. Compared against the PBA total score, the five selected items showed both high sensitivity and specificity in screening pare…

Barriers to Parental Empowerment in the Context of Multidisciplinary Collaboration on Behalf of Preschool Children with Disabilities

2018

The purpose of this study was to explore the role of parents in multidisciplinary collaboration on behalf of their preschool-aged children with disabilities from the theoretical perspective of empowerment. The study employed a multiple-case study design, including twenty-six individual and two focus group interviews with parents and professionals supporting six children and their families. Three interconnected themes emerged from the analysis. First, parents struggled with navigating a system that was perceived as rigid and cumbersome. Second, parents often found themselves in the position of having to ‘police’ the professionals involved in supporting them. Third, parents expressed a desire…

Implementation of the norwegian ‘Starting right’ child health service innovation: implementation adjustments, adoption, and acceptability

2021

Abstract Background An increased and/or stable proportion of the child and adolescent population reports symptoms of impaired health, and the symptoms can be identified early. Therefore, structured child- and parent-reported outcome measures need to be implemented in child and school health services for decision support and identification of children at risk. We aimed to (a) qualitatively examine adjustments of active implementation from the pilot implementation of the Norwegian ‘Starting Right’ health service innovation including an online child health assessment tool and practical routines, and (b) measure practitioners´ adoption and parental acceptability. Methods We used a mixed-methods…

Parental phone use during mealtime with toddlers and the associations with feeding practices and shared family meals: a cross-sectional study

2021

Abstract Background Positive parental feeding practices and a higher frequency of family meals are related to healthier child dietary habits. Parents play an essential role when it comes to the development of their child’s eating habits. However, parents are increasingly distracted by their mobile phone during mealtimes. The aim of this study was to describe the feeding practices and daily shared family meals among parents who use and do not use a mobile phone during mealtimes, and further to explore the associations between the use of a mobile phone during mealtimes and feeding practices and daily shared family meals, respectively. Methods Cross-sectional data from the Food4toddler study w…

Assessment of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in young adolescents following implementation of smoke-free policy in Italy.

2009

We investigated acute and chronic exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) in a cohort of young adolescents using urinary cotinine and hair nicotine testing after recent implementation of Italian smoke free legislation. Study subjects were 372 Italian young adolescents, between 10 and 16 years of age from the principal city of Sicily, Palermo. Urine and hair samples were collected between November 2005 and May 2006, when the legislation to ban smoking in all the enclosed places of employment (including bars, restaurants, pubs) was completely enforced. An exhaustive questionnaire including sociodemographic characteristics and active and passive exposure to cigarette smoking was complete…

Parents' causal attributions concerning their children's academic achievement

2007

Katja Natale seurasi väitöstutkimuksessaan vanhempien lastensa koulumenestystä koskevien kausaaliattribuutioiden eli syyselitysten muotoutumista lasten siirtyessä esikoulusta kouluun. Hän tutki kuinka tärkeinä vanhemmat pitivät kykyä, yrityksen määrää, tehtävien vaikeustasoa ja lapsen saamaa ohjausta selittämässä lasten onnistumista ja epäonnistumista koulussa. - Koulunsa aloittavien lasten vanhempia voisi neuvoa viestimään lapsilleen, että heillä on kykyjä onnistua haastavissakin koulutehtävissä. Tällainen viesti vaikuttaa positiivisesti lasten koulutaitojen kehitykseen ja minäkuvan muuttumiseen realistisemmaksi, Natale suosittaa.Onnistuminen kyvykkyyttä, epäonnistuminen yrityksen puutetta…

Clutch size and egg volume in great tits (Parus major) increase under low intensity electromagnetic fields: a long-term field study.

2012

Exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can affect a wide range of biological processes, including reproduction, growth and development. Experiments aimed at investigating the biological effects of EMFs, focused on potential harmful effects on humans, have been mostly carried out in vitro or with animal models in laboratory conditions. By contrast, studies performed on wild animals are scarce. The effects of EMFs created by an electric power line on reproductive traits of a wild great tit (Parus major) population were explored by analysing data gathered during nine breeding seasons. EMF exposure significantly increased clutch size (7%) and egg volume (3%), implying a 10% increase in clutc…

DEFECTIVE JEJUNAL BRUSH BORDER Na+/H+ EXCHANGE IN LETHAL FAMILIAN PROTRACTED DIARRHOEA

1989

The clinical spectrum of disease associated with the recently described defect in jejunal brush border membrane (BBM) Na+/H+ exchange remains poorly defined. We describe a further, lethal case of protracted diarrhoea in a child from a family in whom 2 previous siblings died of protracted diarrhoea at 2 and 11 months. The patient, a boy, was born at term weighing 2.9 kg and was admitted at 6d with profuse watery diarrhoea, severe dehydration and metabolic acidosis. Parenteral nutrition was started but the diarrhoea persisted, and he developed severe necrotising enterocolitis requiring an ileostomy. A high-output secretory diarrhoea persisted during nil by mouth (ileostomy fluid mmol/l: Na+ 1…

Bone mineral metabolism in the micropremie

2000

Environmental factors, nutritional supplies, hormonal status, diseases, and treatments appear to affect postnatal skeletal growth and mineralization in VLBW infants. Compared with their term counterparts, ELBW infants are at risk of postnatal growth deficiency and osteopenia at the time of hospital discharge. From recent data, DXA is becoming one of the reference techniques to evaluate mineral status, whole-body composition, and effects of dietary manipulations on weight gain composition and mineral accretion in preterm infants. Weight gain and length increases need to be evaluated carefully during the first weeks of life, in the intensive care unit and out of it, in the step down unit. Nut…
