Mauro Picone, Sandro Faedo, and the numerical solution of partial differential equations in Italy (1928-1953)
2013
In this paper we revisit the pioneering work on the numerical analysis of partial differential equations (PDEs) by two Italian mathematicians, Mauro Picone (1885-1977) and Sandro Faedo (1913-2001). We argue that while the development of constructive methods for the solution of PDEs was central to Picone's vision of applied mathematics, his own work in this area had relatively little direct influence on the emerging field of modern numerical analysis. We contrast this with Picone's influence through his students and collaborators, in particular on the work of Faedo which, while not the result of immediate applied concerns, turned out to be of lasting importance for the numerical analysis of …

Validity of needle core biopsy in the histological characterisation of mammary lesions
2006
Summary Over the last few years, there has been an enormous increase in the use of needle core biopsy (CB) for the histopathological characterisation of suspect lesions of the breast. The aim of this study was to verify the diagnostic reliability of CB by comparing the histological results obtained with the use of this technique with those obtained from the whole of the surgically resected specimen. We studied 198 out of 426 patients with clinically and/or radiologically suspect breast lesions. We found correspondence between the histological examination of the whole of the excised specimen and that of the CB in 94.9% of the cases of infiltrating carcinoma and in 71.4% of those involving du…
Half-width plots, a simple tool to predict peak shape, reveal column kinetics and characterise chromatographic columns in liquid chromatography: Stat…
2013
Peak profiles in chromatography are characterised by their height, position, width and asymmetry; the two latter depend on the values of the left and right peak half-widths. Simple correlations have been found between the peak half-widths and the retention times. The representation of such correlations has been called half-width plots. For isocratic elution, the plots are parabolic, although often, the parabolas can be approximated to straight-lines. The plots can be obtained with the half-widths/retention time data for a set of solutes experiencing the same kinetics, eluted with a mobile phase at fixed or varying composition. When the analysed solutes experience different resistance to mas…
Can the Caper (Capparis spinosa L.) Still Be Considered a Difficult-to-Propagate Crop?
2021
As a perennial xerophytic shrub, characterized by plesiomorphic features, the caper (Capparis spinosa L.) is naturally spread throughout the Mediterranean basin and occupies an important ecological role, as well as an economic one, in traditional and specialized systems for commercial production. This species, in spite of its wide diffusion, is currently considered at risk of genetic erosion, mainly due to overgrazing and overharvesting for domestic uses and for trade. This situation is made more serious because of the lack of efficient propagation techniques, determining the caper as a “difficult-to-propagate species”. In this review, we report the main available sexual and vegetative prop…
Exploiting social comparison using pervasive displays and mobile notifications for reducing energy consumption
2017
Abstract Public displays have been used as a persuasive technology in many prior works. In this paper, we describe a persuasive pervasive system aimed at influencing users’ behavior for reducing energy consumption in buildings. This system exploits a pervasive display that visualizes the energy consumption in different levels (rooms, floors, and buildings), exploiting social comparison techniques. Moreover, our system may be extended by means of a mobile application that sends persuasive personalized messages to the users regarding their energy consumption. We then present our evaluation study design, aimed at comparing the effectiveness of three possible implementation of our system: one b…
CNS depressant effects, anti-inflammatory activity and anti-cholinergic actions ofSantolina chamaecyparissus extracts
1988
The pharmacological activity of several extracts together with the lyophilized infusion of S. chamaecyparissus ssp. squarrosa were investigated. The lethal dose 50% (LD50), effect on animal metabolism, mechanical and thermic analgesia and spontaneous, anti-inflammatory, and anti-ulcer activity have been determined. Studies on isolated organs (rat duodenum and rat uterus) were also carried out. The hexanic and chloroformic extracts were potent antagonists of the thermic analgesia test; the former extract was also active in the mechanical analgesia test. The chloroformic extract and, to a lesser extent, the ethyl acetate extract and lyophilized infusion demonstrated noteworthy activity as ant…
Screening of antiinflammatory medicinal plants used in traditional medicine against skin diseases
1998
The antiinflammatory activity of twelve medicinal plants used against skin disorders were tested in different experimental models of topical inflammation and one in vitro inhibitory test against phospholipase A2 (PLA2) from Naja naja venom. Forsythia suspensa was the most active species on the arachidonic acid (AA) topical test. This last species together with Astragalus membranaceus and Ranunculus sceleratus were the most active on the 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) acute ear oedema test. Scrophularia auriculata was the most active on multiple topical applications of TPA and on the oxazolone-induced delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH). Santolina chamaecyparissus was the only sp…
