Diagnosis and therapy of cutaneous and mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis in Germany
2011
The incidence of cutaneous and mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL/MCL) is increasing globally, also in Germany, although the cases are imported and still low in number. The current evidence for the different therapies has many limitations due to lack of sufficient studies on the different Leishmania species with differing virulence. So far there is no international gold standard for the optimal management. The aim of the German joint working group on Leishmaniasis, formed by the societies of Tropical Medicine (DTG), Chemotherapy (PEG) and Dermatology (DDG), was to establish a guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of CL and MCL in Germany, based on evidence (Medline search yielded 400 artic…
Effect of antiretroviral protease inhibitors alone, and in combination with paromomycin, on the excystation, invasion and in vitro development of Cry…
2003
With the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus in the early 1980s, cryptosporidiosis was regarded as an AIDS-defining disease. As an opportunistic pathogen, the intestinal parasite Cryptosporidium parvum became an important cause of chronic diarrhoea, leading to high morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. To date, no effective chemotherapy is available. With the introduction of protease inhibitors (PIs) in highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the incidence of cryptosporidiosis in AIDS patients has declined substantially in western countries. We have therefore tested the effect of five PIs used in HAART on the excystation, invasion and development of the parasit…
Nucleotide's bilinear indices: Novel bio-macromolecular descriptors for bioinformatics studies of nucleic acids. I. Prediction of paromomycin's affin…
2009
A new set of nucleotide-based bio-macromolecular descriptors are presented. This novel approach to bio-macromolecular design from a linear algebra point of view is relevant to nucleic acids quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) studies. These bio-macromolecular indices are based on the calculus of bilinear maps on Re(n)[b(mk)(x (m),y (m)):Re(n) x Re(n)--Re] in canonical basis. Nucleic acid's bilinear indices are calculated from kth power of non-stochastic and stochastic nucleotide's graph-theoretic electronic-contact matrices, M(m)(k) and (s)M(m)(k), respectively. That is to say, the kth non-stochastic and stochastic nucleic acid's bilinear indices are calculated using M(m)(k)…
Beneficial Read-Through of aUSH1CNonsense Mutation by Designed Aminoglycoside NB30 in the Retina
2010
PURPOSE. The human Usher syndrome (USH) is the most frequent cause of inherited combined deaf-blindness. USH is clinically and genetically heterogeneous, assigned to three clinical types. The most severe type is USH1, characterized by profound inner ear defects and retinitis pigmentosa. Thus far, no effective treatment for the ophthalmic component of USH exists. The p.R31X nonsense mutation in USH1C leads to a disease causing premature termination of gene translation. Here, we investigated the capability of the novel synthetic aminoglycoside NB30 for the translational read-through of the USH1C-p.R31X nonsense mutation as a retinal therapy option. METHODS. Read-through of p.R31X by three com…
