Parotid lymphoepithelial cyst in non-HIV patient

2011

The lymphoepithelial cyst is a dysontogenic benign cyst originated from the epithelial remnant retained inside the lymphoid tissue during the embryogenesis that occurs in the lateral neck region and, less frequently, in the oral cavity and in the parotid gland. The parotid gland evolvement increased significantly after the HIV discovery and it is related to ductal obstruction phenomenon that goes along with a follicular hyperplasia in the periductal parotid lymph nodes. However, lymphoepithelial cysts are rare in non-HIV patients. Treatment options are controversial and might include cystic content aspiration, sclerosis-therapy, radiotherapy and surgery. Enucleation of the cyst while preser…

Sialolithiasis. Proposal for a new minimally invasive procedure: Piezoelectric surgery

2014

Sialolithiasis is the presence of stones in the ducts of the salivary glands. Most episodes are unique, and 60-80% are located exclusively in the main excretory duct. The main clinical manifestations are swelling and pain typically before, during or after meals that decreases if the obstruction is not complete. The highest prevalence of lithiasis is in the submandibular gland -87%-, whose secretion is more viscous, followed by the parotid gland -10%- and finally the sublingual gland -3%-. The most significant consequences are caused by the prolonged blockage of the duct by a stone, which can produce a persistent ductal dilatation with a swelling that does not subside, and could lead to the …

Comparison of Studies on Mobile Phone Use and Risk of Tumors

2010

published results of ameta-analysis of studies on mobile phone use and risk of tumors. Intheir analysis, the authors included 23 case-control studies, covering abroad spectrum of tumor entities including uveal melanoma, testicu-lar cancer, parotid gland tumors, and brain tumors. However, the authors give no rationale for pooling these hetero-geneous, biologically rather diverse cancer sites, for which the local-ized exposure from the use of mobile phones is completely different. The key difference between this particular meta-analysis com-pared with earlier ones is the use of a quality score. Sialolitiasis parotídea del conducto de Stensen

2006

Seltene Parotistumoren

2003

Tumors of the parotid gland can be benign or malignant lesions. The pathophysiology of rare tumors of the parotid gland is often not sufficiently explored. In this paper two rare histological entities are described. In one patient a benign sebaceous lymphadenoma was histologically diagnosed. This type of tumor accounts for only 0.1% of all adenomas. The international literature is not conclusive about whether the tumor originates in the parotid gland itself or in the parotid lymph nodes. The second patient presented with a metastasis from a glioblastoma in the parotid gland. Again, the mechanism for metastasis of an intracerebral tumor to the parotid gland remains unknown. Iatrogenic seeding …

Atrial Natriuretic Peptide presence in parotid gland of human fetus at 13th week of development and in adult man

2013

Our immunohistochemical study shows that atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is present in both human fetal and adult parotid gland. In the fetuses ANP is localized in cell clusters, while in adult parotid gland, the ANP is seen only in the wall of intra- and extralobular ducts. The results suggest that ANP might play a role in the differentiation of the parotid gland similarly as in brain and that during fetal growth ANP may play a role in the regulating the secretion of primitive salivary fluid, even if acini are still not developed. Solitary fibrous tumor of the parotid gland: case report

2013

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle cell neoplasm that usually develops in the pleura and peritoneum. The head and neck region is involved in only 6% of the cases. Involvement of the parotid gland is a rare phenomenon, with only 24 cases reported in the literature. The aim of this study is to report an additional case of SFT affecting the parotid gland, and to review the literature on previously reported cases. The patient was a 42-year-old male with a 4-cm, fibro-elastic, movable, painless nodule in the inferior lobe of the parotid gland. The lesion was surgically excised and, following histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis, a diagnosis of SFT was rendered. The pati…

Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland : case report and review of the literature

2007

Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) is difficult to diagnose both clinically and histologically due to its indolent presentation, and because of its morphological diversity that includes several microscopic patterns. The aggressive biologic behavior seen in minor salivary glands as compared to major glands is apparently associated histologically to a predominance of the papillary pattern in the former. Biologic behavior of PLGA in the major salivary glands is uncertain, as some cases have developed recurrences and metastases independently of the presence of a papillary pattern. A case of PLGA originated de novo in parotid gland is presented a 60 year-old male, treatment was surgica…
