Within a case study ‘Ecobalance’, the fate and effects of various chlorinated and non-chlorinated organic compounds and some heavy metals discharged from pulp and paper mills into water, sediment and aquatic animals were studied in a recipient area of southern Lake Saimaa, SE Finland. The main aim of the project was to find an empirical link between chemical emission parameters and ecotoxicological effects expressed in the ecosystem. As part of the \‘Ecobalance’ project, principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS) methods were used to interpret the data of the lake area. phi-Best proximity point theorems and applications to variational inequality problems

The main concern of this study is to introduce the notion of $$\varphi $$ -best proximity points and establish the existence and uniqueness of $$\varphi $$ -best proximity point for non-self mappings satisfying $$(F,\varphi )$$ -proximal and $$(F,\varphi )$$ -weak proximal contraction conditions in the context of complete metric spaces. Some examples are supplied to support the usability of our results. As applications of the obtained results, some new best proximity point results in partial metric spaces are presented. Furthermore, sufficient conditions to ensure the existence of a unique solution for a variational inequality problem are also discussed.
The diamond partial order in rings

In this paper we introduce a new partial order on a ring, namely the diamond partial order. This order is an extension of a partial order defined in a matrix setting in [J.K. Baksalary and J. Hauke, A further algebraic version of Cochran's theorem and matrix partial orderings, Linear Algebra and its Applications, 127, 157--169, 1990]. We characterize the diamond partial order on rings and study its relationships with other partial orders known in the literature. We also analyze successors, predecessors and maximal elements under the diamond order.
Hardy inequalities and Assouad dimensions

We establish both sufficient and necessary conditions for weighted Hardy inequalities in metric spaces in terms of Assouad (co)dimensions. Our sufficient conditions in the case where the complement is thin are new even in Euclidean spaces, while in the case of a thick complement we give new formulations for previously known sufficient conditions which reveal a natural duality between these two cases. Our necessary conditions are rather straight-forward generalizations from the unweighted case, but together with some examples they indicate the essential sharpness of our results. In addition, we consider the mixed case where the complement may contain both thick and thin parts.
A criterion for zero averages and full support of ergodic measures

Anomalous partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms III: Abundance and incoherence

Let $M$ be a closed 3-manifold which admits an Anosov flow. In this paper we develop a technique for constructing partially hyperbolic representatives in many mapping classes of $M$. We apply this technique both in the setting of geodesic flows on closed hyperbolic surfaces and for Anosov flows which admit transverse tori. We emphasize the similarity of both constructions through the concept of $h$-transversality, a tool which allows us to compose different mapping classes while retaining partial hyperbolicity. Fixed points for Geraghty-Contractions in partial metric spaces

We establish some fixed point theorems for mappings satisfying Geraghty-type contractive conditions in the setting of partial metric spaces and ordered partial metric spaces. Presented theorems extend and generalize many existing results in the literature. We establish coupled coincidence and coupled fixed point results for a pair of mappings satisfying a compatibility hypothesis in partially ordered metric spaces. An example is given to illustrate our obtained results.
On partially saturated formations of finite groups

Various types of partially saturated formations and connections between them are considered. It is shown that partially saturated formations can be characterized as classes of finite groups with generalized central series. A theorem on the decomposition of an FG-module into a sum of two submodules with special properties is proved.Bibliography: 26 titles.
