Solubility of NH3 and apparent pK of NH4+ in human plasma, isotonic salt solutions and water at 37 degrees C.
1998
The solubility of ammonia, alphaNH3 (mM/mmHg), was determined at 37 degrees C and low ammonia partial pressure (0.02-1 mmHg) in pure water (n =24) as 46.70+/-0.40; aqueous isotonic salt solutions (n = 7) as 46.8+/-0.81; and human plasma (n = 5) as 42.0+/-0.66. The last figure increases to 45.3+/-0.63 if expressed in molal units (mmol/kg plasma water x mmHg) instead of molarity with respect to the water content of the plasma (mean from four healthy and fasting donors: 0.908+0.005 kg H2O/kg plasma; mean density at 37 degrees C: 1.020+/-0.002 kg/l). In pure water, the solubility value is the mean of three different methods: (a) extrapolation of the salting-out effect of ammonia in aqueous NaOH…

Tilted implants for the restoration of posterior mandibles with horizontal atrophy: An alternative treatment
2013
Purpose Horizontal atrophy in the posterior mandible presents serious limitations on conventional implant placement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of tilted implants angled in a buccolingual direction for restoring atrophic posterior mandibular sectors. Materials and Methods A cohort study was performed of 25 patients who had partial prostheses supported by more than 1 implant (≥1 tilted and 1 axial implant) to restore molar areas in the mandible. When the bone thickness was at least 5 mm, axial implants were placed; when the alveolar ridge was narrower, the implant was placed with tilted angulation. The beds for these tilted implants were prepared using a lingual approa…
IMPACT OF SHORTENED DENTAL ARCH ON ORAL HEALTH-RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE.
2021
Abstract Background A shortened dental arch (SDA) is an established treatment concept for patients with missing molars. However, little is known regarding long-term course of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with SDA and the benefits from replacement of missing molars. Aim Purpose of this multi-center randomized clinical trial was to assess OHRQoL over a period of 15 years in patients with molar replacement by a removable partial denture (RPD) compared to patients with a restored SDA without molar replacement. Design Patients at least 35 years of age with all molars missing in one jaw and at least the canine and one premolar present on each side were included. Patien…
Impact of shortened dental arch on oral health-related quality of life over a period of 10 years — A randomized controlled trial
2018
Abstract Objectives To compare oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with either molar replacement by partial removable dental prostheses (PRDP) or with restored shortened dental arches (SDA) over a period of 10 years. Methods In this multi-center RCT, a consecutive sample of 215 patients with bilateral molar loss in at least one jaw was initially recruited in 14 prosthodontic departments. Of those patients, 150 could be randomly allocated to the treatment groups (SDA: n = 71; PRDP: n = 79), received the allocated treatment, and were available for follow-up assessments. OHRQoL was assessed using the 49-item version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) before treatment…
The randomized shortened dental arch study: tooth loss.
2010
The evidence concerning the management of shortened dental arch (SDA) cases is sparse. This multi-center study was aimed at generating data on outcomes and survival rates for two common treatments, removable dental prostheses (RDP) for molar replacement or no replacement (SDA). The hypothesis was that the treatments lead to different incidences of tooth loss. We included 215 patients with complete molar loss in one jaw. Molars were either replaced by RDP or not replaced, according to the SDA concept. First tooth loss after treatment was the primary outcome measure. This event occurred in 13 patients in the RDP group and nine patients in the SDA group. The respective Kaplan-Meier survival r…
Shear bond strength of partial coverage restorations to dentin
2015
BACKGROUND: When partial coverage restorations (veneers, inlays, onlays…) must be cemented to dentin, bond strength may not reach the same predictable values as to enamel. The purpose of this study was: 1. To compare, with a shear bond test, the bond strength to dentin of a total-etch and a self-etching bonding agent. 2. To determine whether creating microretention improves the bond strength to dentin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two bonding agents were assayed, Optibond FL® (Kerr), two-bottle adhesive requiring acid etching, and Clearfil SE Bond® (Kuraray), two-bottle self-etching adhesive. The vestibular, lingual, distal and mesial surfaces of ten molars (n=10) were ground to remove all enamel …
Thermodynamics of Micellization of Sodium Alkyl Sulfates in Water at High Temperature and Pressure
2001
Apparent molar volumes VΦ,S were determined for sodium octyl, decyl, and dodecyl sulfates in water at 2 and 19 MPa from 25 to 130 °C. The shapes of VΦ,S vs the surfactant concentration curves depend on the surfactant alkyl chain, temperature and pressure. The standard partial molar volumes were calculated from data in the premicellar region whereas the partial molar volumes of the surfactant in the micellar phase were obtained from data in the postmicellar region. The partial molar expansibility and compressibility were evaluated from the dependence of the partial molar volume on temperature and pressure, respectively. Attention was focused to the expansibility and its pressure coefficient …
Apparent molar volumes of 1-pentanol in water fromT=298 K toT=413 K atp=0.1 MPa andp=19 MPa
1996
Abstract Densities of 1-pentanol aqueous solutions were measured by using a vibrating tube densimeter especially designed and equipped to perform accurate measurements from ambient conditions up toT=423 K andp=80 MPa. The densimeter was tested by measuring densities of NaCl (aq). A comparison with the most reliable literature data showed very good agreement with differences lower than (0.03 and 0.1) kg·m−3for molalities below and above 0.5 mol·kg−1, respectively. From the density measurements, the apparent molar volumes of 1-pentanol in water,Vφwere determined as a function of molalitymat temperatures fromT=298 K toT=413 K atp=0.1 MPa andp=19 MPa. At a given temperature and pressure, and pa…
Marginal and Internal Precision of Zirconia Four-Unit Fixed Partial Denture Frameworks Produced Using Four Milling Systems
2021
Background: CAD/CAM systems enable the production of fixed partial dentures with small and reproducible internal and marginal gaps. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility of the marginal and internal adaptations of four-unit fixed partial denture frameworks produced using four CAD/CAM systems. Materials and Methods: Prepared dies of a master model that simulated the loss of the first left molar were measured. Fifteen frameworks were manufactured using four CAD/CAM systems (A–D). The internal fit was determined by the replica technique, and the marginal gap was determined by microscopy. ANOVA was carried out to detect significant differences, and the Bonferron…
