Effect of electron cyclotron resonance ion source frequency tuning on ion beam intensity and quality at Department of Physics, University of Jyväskyl…

2010

Ion beam intensity and quality have a crucial effect on the operation efficiency of the accelerator facilities. This paper presents the investigations on the ion beam intensity and quality after the mass separation performed with the Department of Physics, University of Jyvaskyla 14 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source by sweeping the microwave in the 14.05–14.13 GHz range. In many cases a clear variation in the ion beam intensity and quality as a function of the frequency was observed. The effect of frequency tuning increased with the charge state. In addition, clear changes in the beam structure seen with the beam viewer were observed. The results confirmed that frequency tuning ca…

Progress of resonant ionization laser ion source development at GANIL.

2014

SPIRAL2 (Systeme de Production d’Ions Radioactifs Acceleres en Ligne) is a research facility under construction at GANIL (Grand Accelerateur National d’Ions Lourds) for the production of radioactive ion beams by isotope separation on-line methods and low-energy in-flight techniques. A resonant ionization laser ion source will be one of the main techniques to produce the radioactive ion beams. GISELE (GANIL Ion Source using Electron Laser Excitation) is a test bench developed to study a fully operational laser ion source available for Day 1 operations at SPIRAL2 Phase 2. The aim of this project is to find the best technical solution which combines high selectivity and ionization efficiency w…

The REX-ISOLDE project

2002

REX-ISOLDE is a pilot experiment at ISOLDE/CERN to study the structure of neutron-rich nuclei (N=20, N=28) with post-accelerated radioactive ion beams (1). Therefore radioactive ions with charge state 1+, which are delivered by the online mass separator ISOLDE, are accelerated up to 2.2 MeV/u by means of a new concept. The radioactive ions are first accumulated in a Penning trap, then charge breeded to a charge-to-mass ratio of 1/4.5 in an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) and finally accelerated. The LINAC consists of three components, namely a Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator, which accelerates the ions from 5 to 300 keV/u, an interdigital H-type structure (IH) with a final ener…

Search for polarization effects in the antiproton production process

2015

For the production of a polarized antiproton beam various methods have been suggested including the possibility that antiprotons may be produced polarized which will be checked experimentally. The polarization of antiprotons produced under typical conditions for antiproton beam preparation will be measured at the CERN/PS. If the production process creates some polarization a polarized antiproton beam could be prepared by a rather simple modification of the antiproton beam facility. The detection setup and the expected experimental conditions are described. For the production of a polarized antiproton beam various methods have been suggested including the possibility that antiprotons may be …

Status of REX-ISOLDE

2003

REX-ISOLDE [1] is a post-accelerator situated at the ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility placed at CERN, Geneva. It’s main aim is to increase the energy of light (A < 50) radioactive ions from 60 keV to 0.8–2.2MeV/u. REX—ISOLDE uses a new concept of post-acceleration of radioactive ion beams by using charge breeding of the ions in a high charge state ion source and the efficient acceleration of the highly charged ions in a short LINAC using modern ion accelerator structures. In a first step the radioactive ions are captured in a large gas-filled Penning trap. The task is to accumulate, cool and bunch the beam and prepare it for the injection into an electron beam ion source (EBIS). Cooling…

Relativistic Effects and Two-Body Currents inH2(e→,e′p)nUsing Out-of-Plane Detection

2001

Measurements of the (2)H((-->)e,e(')p)n reaction were performed with the out-of-plane magnetic spectrometers (OOPS) at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator. The longitudinal-transverse, f(LT) and f(')(LT), and the transverse-transverse, f(TT), interference responses at a missing momentum of 210 MeV/c were simultaneously extracted in the dip region at Q2 = 0.15 (GeV/c)(2). In comparison to models of deuteron electrodisintegration, the data clearly reveal strong effects of relativity and final-state interactions and the importance of two-body meson-exchange currents and isobar configurations. We demonstrate that such effects can be disentangled by extracting these responses using the novel out-of…

Multipactor Analysis in Circular Waveguides

2009

[EN] This paper mainly focuses on demonstrating that a multipactor discharge can occur within a circular waveguide operating under the fundamental TE11 circular mode. Circular waveguides are widely used in the fabrication of many passive components, in order to implement resonant cavities as well as irises to connect adjacent guides for both application domains, particle accelerators and satellite subsystems applications. Thus, we present the first study of the multipactor effect in a circular waveguide, demonstrating its existence and providing a susceptibility chart for such a structure, which will be of great interest for the better understanding of multipactor physical phenomena.

Measurement of theτ−→K−π0ντbranching fraction

2007

A measurement of the tau(-)-> K-pi(0)nu(tau) branching fraction has been made using 230.2 fb(-1) of data recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e(+)e(-) collider, located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), at a center-of-mass energy root s close to 10.58 GeV. We measure B(tau(-)-> K-pi(0)nu(tau))=(0.416 +/- 0.003(stat)+/- 0.018(syst))%.

Instrumentation and optimization studies for a beam dump experiment (BDX) at MESA — DarkMESA

2020

Abstract At the Institute for Nuclear Physics in Mainz the new electron accelerator MESA will go into operation within the next years. The high-power beam dump of the P2 experiment is ideally suited for a parasitic dark sector experiment — DarkMESA. In the first stage 1,000 high density Cherenkov radiators from a previous experiment will be used. The experiment is studied with a simulation based on MadGraph and Geant4 . The simulation includes an optical photon study, where the response of possible calorimeter materials – PbF 2, BGO, the Pb glasses SF5, SF6 and SF57HTultra from Schott – was investigated. The simulation outcomes are compared with the results of prototypes tested at the Mainz…

A novel four-quadrant power supply for low-energy correction magnets

2003

Abstract This paper describes an efficient power supply to feed low-energy correction magnets in particle accelerator applications, where a controlled current with trapezoidal profile and four-quadrant operation is needed. The selected design is based on an AC–DC matrix converter topology, which uses the Space Vector Modulation (SVM) technique to obtain a near unity power factor at the AC input and output DC current regulation. This topology allows performing high-frequency isolation, while four-quadrant operation is maintained, and reducing volume and weight as compared with the classical thyristor (SCR)-based technology. Control tasks are implemented on an all-digital control card: output…
