The Concept of Duality and Applications to Markov Processes Arising in Neutral Population Genetics Models
1999
One possible and widely used definition of the duality of Markov processes employs functions H relating one process to another in a certain way. For given processes X and Y the space U of all such functions H, called the duality space of X and Y, is studied in this paper. The algebraic structure of U is closely related to the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the transition matrices of X and Y. Often as for example in physics (interacting particle systems) and in biology (population genetics models) dual processes arise naturally by looking forwards and backwards in time. In particular, time-reversible Markov processes are self-dual. In this paper, results on the duality space are presented f…
The Mean-Field Limit for Solid Particles in a Navier-Stokes Flow
2008
We propose a mathematical derivation of Brinkman's force for a cloud of particles immersed in an incompressible viscous fluid. Specifically, we consider the Stokes or steady Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain Omega subset of R-3 for the velocity field u of an incompressible fluid with kinematic viscosity v and density 1. Brinkman's force consists of a source term 6 pi rvj where j is the current density of the particles, and of a friction term 6 pi vpu where rho is the number density of particles. These additional terms in the motion equation for the fluid are obtained from the Stokes or steady Navier-Stokes equations set in Omega minus the disjoint union of N balls of radius epsilo…
From Particle Systems to Partial Differential Equations International Conference, Particle Systems and PDEs VI, VII and VIII, 2017-2019
2021
This book includes the joint proceedings of the International Conference on Particle Systems and PDEs VI, VII and VIII. Particle Systems and PDEs VI was held in Nice, France, in November/December 2017, Particle Systems and PDEs VII was held in Palermo, Italy, in November 2018, and Particle Systems and PDEs VIII was held in Lisbon, Portugal, in December 2019. Most of the papers are dealing with mathematical problems motivated by different applications in physics, engineering, economics, chemistry and biology. They illustrate methods and topics in the study of particle systems and PDEs and their relation. The book is recommended to probabilists, analysts and to those mathematicians in general…
Numerical studies of transport in complex many-particle systems far from equilibrium
2012
In this Thesis, transport in complex nonequilibrium many-particle systems is studied using numerical master equation approach and Monte Carlo simulations. We focus on the transport of the center-of-mass of deformable objects with internal structure. Two physical systems are studied in detail: linear polymers using the Rubinstein-Duke model and single-layer metal-on-metal atomic islands using a semi-empirical lattice model. Polymers and islands are driven out of thermodynamic equilibrium by strong static and time-dependent external forces. Topics covered in this work include introductions to nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, master equations and computational methods, with construction a…
