Top-quark mass measurements at the LHC: alternative methods

Alternative top quark mass determinations can provide inputs to the world average with orthogonal systematic uncertainties and may help to refine the interpretation of the standard method. Among a number of recent results I focus on the extractions by ATLAS and CMS of the top quark pole mass from the top quark pair and tt + 1 jet production cross-section, which have now reached a precision of 1%. Development and in vitro Evaluation of Antigen-Loaded Poly(amidoamine) Nanoparticles for Respiratory Epithelium Applications

A poly(amidoamine) with disulfide linkages in the main chain and 4-hydroxybutyl and ω-carboxy-PEG groups (9:1 ratio) as side chains was prepared by Michael addition polymerization of cystamine bisacrylamide with 4-hydroxybutylamine and ω-carboxy-PEG-amine. To develop therapeutic protein formulations for improved delivery of antigen via the intranasal route, nanoparticles were prepared from this polymer by self-assembly with p24 or ovalbumin as the model proteins and CpG as the adjuvant. The nanoparticles incorporated the antigens and adjuvant from the feed solution with high efficiency (∼90 %) and have sizes of 112 and 169 nm, respectively, with low positive surface charge (∼+2 mV). Nontemplate Synthesis of CH3NH3PbBr3 Perovskite Nanoparticles

To date, there is no example in the literature of free, nanometer-sized, organolead halide CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskites. We report here the preparation of 6 nm-sized nanoparticles of this type by a simple and fast method based on the use of an ammonium bromide with a medium-sized chain that keeps the nanoparticles dispersed in a wide range of organic solvents. These nanoparticles can be maintained stable in the solid state as well as in concentrated solutions for more than three months, without requiring a mesoporous material. Enhanced organic mass fraction and decreased hygroscopicity of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) during new particle formation events

In a forested near-urban location in central Germany, the CCN efficiency of particles smaller than 100 nm decreases significantly during periods of new particle formation. This results in an increase of average activation diameters, ranging from 5 to 8% at supersaturations of 0.33% and 0.74%, respectively. At the same time, the organic mass fraction in the sub-100-nm size range increases from approximately 2/3 to 3/4. This provides evidence that secondary organic aerosol (SOA) components are involved in the growth of new particles to larger sizes, and that the reduced CCN efficiency of small particles is caused by the low hygroscopicity of the condensing material. The molecular basis of insulin aggregation is relevant for modeling the amyloidogenesis process, which is involved in many pathologies, as well as for improving delivery systems, used for diabetes treatments. Tuning the selectivity of molecularly imprinted polymer extraction of arylcyclohexylamines: From class-selective to specific

Abstract A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) has been prepared in presence of 3-hydroxy phencyclidine (3-OH PCP) as template by bulk polymerization using N,N-dimethylformamide, as porogenic solvent, for the selective solid-phase extraction (SPE) of arylcyclohexylamines from oral fluids. Experimental variables of the extraction procedure have been studied in order to increase both, extraction recovery of 3-OH PCP, used as model analyte, and imprinting factor. Gold Nanorods as Plasmonic Sensors for Particle Diffusion.

Plasmonic gold nanoparticles are normally used as sensor to detect analytes permanently bound to their surface. If the interaction between the analyte and the nanosensor surface is negligible, it only diffuses through the sensor’s sensing volume, causing a small temporal shift of the plasmon resonance position. By using a very sensitive and fast detection scheme, we are able to detect these small fluctuations in the plasmon resonance. With the help of a theoretical model consistent with our detection geometry, we determine the analyte’s diffusion coefficient.
