Statistical mechanics of the NLS models and their avatars
2006
“In Vishnuland what avatar? Or who in Moscow (Leningrad) towards the czar [1]”. The different manifestations (avatars) of the Nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS models) are described including both classical and quantum integrable cases. For reasons explained the sinh-Gordon and sine-Gordon models, which can be interpreted as covariant manifestations of the ‘repulsive’ and ‘attractive’ NLS models, respectively, are chosen as generic models for the statistical mechanics. It is shown in the text how the quantum and classical free energies can be calculated by a method of functional integration which uses the classical action-angle variables on the real line with decaying boundary conditions,…
The rotational spectrum of 17O2 up to the THz region
2016
Abstract The investigation of the pure rotational spectrum of the 17O2 isotopic species of molecular oxygen has been extended with respect to previous investigations to the submillimeter-wave region, from 230 GHz up to 1.06 THz. The resulting spectroscopic parameters, which have an accuracy comparable to that of the constants obtained from an updated isotopic invariant fit involving data for three electronic states and six isotopologues [Yu et al. High resolution spectral analysis of oxygen. IV. Energy levels, partition sums, bandconstants, RKR potentials, Franck–Condon factors involving the X 3 Σ g − , a 1 Δ g , and b 1 Σ g + states. J Chem Phys 2014;141:174302/1–12], permit the prediction…
Effective bias and potentials in steady-state quantum transport: A NEGF reverse-engineering study
2016
Using non-equilibrium Green’s functions combined with many-body perturbation theory, we have calculated steady-state densities and currents through short interacting chains subject to a finite electric bias. By using a steady-state reverse-engineering procedure, the effective potential and bias which reproduce such densities and currents in a non-interacting system have been determined. The role of the effective bias is characterised with the aid of the so-called exchange-correlation bias, recently introduced in a steady-state density-functionaltheory formulation for partitioned systems. We find that the effective bias (or, equivalently, the exchange-correlation bias) depends strongly on th…
Thermodynamics of supercooled liquids in the inherent structure formalism: a case study
2000
In this article we review the thermodynamics of liquids in the framework of the inherent structure formalism. We then present calculations of the distribution of the basins in the potential energy of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture as a function of temperature. The comparison between the numerical data and the theoretical formalism allows us to evaluate the degeneracy of the inherent structures in a bulk system and to estimate the energy of the lowest energy disordered state (the Kauzmann energy). We find that, around the mode-coupling temperature, the partition function of the liquid is approximated well by the product of two loosely coupled partition functions, one depending on the inheren…
Renormalization group analysis of thermal transport in the disordered Fermi liquid
2014
We present a detailed study of thermal transport in the disordered Fermi liquid with short-range interactions. At temperatures smaller than the impurity scattering rate, i.e., in the diffusive regime, thermal conductivity acquires non-analytic quantum corrections. When these quantum corrections become large at low temperatures, the calculation of thermal conductivity demands a theoretical approach that treats disorder and interactions on an equal footing. In this paper, we develop such an approach by merging Luttinger's idea of using gravitational potentials for the analysis of thermal phenomena with a renormalization group calculation based on the Keldysh nonlinear sigma model. The gravita…

Rotational Three-Body Resonances: A New Adiabatic Approach
2001
In the standard adiabatic approach the motion of the fast, light particle (electron) is treated so as to produce an effective potential that governs the motion of the heavy particles (nuclei). The rotational degrees of freedom are then taken into account by adding the centrifugal J(J + 1)-term to the channel potentials and introducing rotational (Coriolis) couplings into conventional close-coupling calculations. Of course, a perturbative treatment of the rotational motion is justified only provided the rotational energy is sufficiently small. If, however, the rotation is as energetic as the motion of the fast particle, both motions should be treated on the same footing in order to produce s…
Physiological, anatomical and biomass partitioning responses to ozone in the Mediterranean endemic plant Lamottea dianae
2011
Ozone effects on the perennial forb Lamottea dianae were studied in an open-top chamber experiment. Ozone was found to induce reductions in CO 2 assimilation and water use efficiency in the leaves of this species. These reductions were mainly related to a decline in the in vivo CO 2 fixation capacity of Rubisco (V c,max), rather than to stomatal limitations or photoinhibitory damage (F v:F m). In addition to chloroplast degeneration, other observed effects were callose accumulation, formation of pectinaceous wart-like cell wall exudates and phloem alterations. Moreover, ozone exposure significantly reduced root dry biomass. The possible relevance of these adverse effects for Mediterranean f…
Local properties of quantum chemical systems: the LoProp approach.
2004
A new method is presented, which makes it possible to partition molecular properties like multipole moments and polarizabilities, into atomic and interatomic contributions. The method requires a subdivision of the atomic basis set into occupied and virtual basis functions for each atom in the molecular system. The localization procedure is organized into a series of orthogonalizations of the original basis set, which will have as a final result a localized orthonormal basis set. The new localization procedure is demonstrated to be stable with various basis sets, and to provide physically meaningful localized properties. Transferability of the methyl properties for the alkane series and of t…
Two centuries of politics in Sicily
2004
