Photodynamic therapy with verteporfin for subfoveal choroidal neovascularization secondary to pathologic myopia: long-term study.

2006

Purpose: To assess the safety and effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin for subfoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to pathologic myopia (PM). Methods: Sixty-two patients (62 eyes) with PM underwent PDT according to the guidelines of the Verteporfin in Photodynamic Therapy Study. Clinical evaluations performed at all study visits included measurement of best-corrected Snellen visual acuity, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, and fundus fluorescein angiography. Patients were followed up at 1 month and 3 months after treatment and thereafter at 3-month intervals. Results: The final visual acuity of the study patients, after a median follow-up of 31 months, improved…

Characterization of the effect of intracorneal ring segment in corneal ectasia after laser refractive surgery

2018

Purpose: To evaluate the visual, refractive, topographic, pachymetric, and biomechanical outcomes after intracorneal ring segment implantation in corneas with post-LASIK ectasia. Methods: Retrospective longitudinal study enrolling 26 eyes of 22 patients with post-LASIK ectasia and undergoing intracorneal ring segment implantation (KeraRing®, Mediphacos) using a 60-kHz femtosecond laser (IntraLase®, IntraLase Corp.) for corneal tunnelization. Visual, refractive, anterior, and posterior corneal topographic (Pentacam HR, Oculus), pachymetric, and corneal biomechanical changes (Ocular response Analyzer, Reichert) were evaluated during a 12-month follow-up. Vector analysis of astigmatic changes …

Prevalence of herpes simplex, Epstein Barr and human papilloma viruses in oral lichen planus.

2011

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of Herpes Simplex virus, Epstein Barr virus and Human Papilloma virus -16 in oral lichen planus cases and to evaluate whether any clinical variant, histopathological or demographic feature correlates with these viruses. Study Design: The study was conducted on 65 cases. Viruses were detected immunohistochemically. We evaluated the histopathological and demographic features and statistically analysed correlation of these features with Herpes Simplex virus, Epstein Barr virus and Human Papilloma virus-16 positivity. Results: Herpes Simplex virus was positive in six (9%) cases and this was not statistically significant. The …

Thanatophoric dysplasia in monozygotic twins discordant for cloverleaf skull: Prenatal diagnosis, clinical and pathological findings

1992

We present male monozygotic twins with thanatophoric dysplasia (TD) type I concordant for long bone abnormalities and discordant for cloverleaf skull. The twins were the product of the second pregnancy of unrelated parents, with advanced paternal age. Prenatal diagnosis and postmortem examination showed severe rhizomelic shortness of limbs, bowing of the long bones with "telephone-receiver" femora in both twins, and cloverleaf skull and hydrocephalus in one of them. It is now accepted that most of cases of TD, such as in the present report, represent an autosomal dominant mutation with a high new mutations rate.

EchoScopy in scanning abdominal diseases: initial clinical experience.

2014

Background and Aims: The introduction of a new type of small handheld ultrasound device brings greater portability and affordability. The basic ultrasound approach with these handheld devices has been defined by European Federation of Societies of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB) as “EchoScopy”. The current study aimed to assess the image quality, indications and limitations of a portable pocket “EchoScope” compared with a high-end ultrasound system in abdominal diseases. Methods: 231 consecutive patients were included in this study. Physician A performed ultrasound examinations with a high-end ultrasound system (HEUS), then physician B performed the same ultrasound examination u…

Inverse regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor and VHL tumor suppressor gene in sporadic renal cell carcinomas is correlated with vascular …

1999

Tumors associated with the VHL (von Hippel-Lindau) disease, such as hemangioblastomas and renal carcinomas and their sporadic counterparts, are cystic and well vascularized. Mutations of the VHL tumor-suppressor gene and elevated levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have been described in these tumors. The upregulation of VEGF has been shown in vitro as a consequence of alteration of the VHL gene. No comprehensive in vivo analysis has yet been carried out of the factors affecting tumor growth, vascularization, VEGF, and VHL expression. We performed immunohistochemistry and mRNA studies on primary sporadic renal carcinomas and matching normal renal tissue. We semiquantitativel…

Angiogenesis modifications related with cetuximab plus irinotecan as anticancer treatment in advanced colorectal cancer patients

2006

INTRODUCTION Angiogenesis has been correlated with increased invasion and metastases in a variety of human neoplasms. Inadequate inhibition of the growth of tumor microvessels by anticancer agents may result in treatment failure, rated clinically as progressive or stable disease. We designed this trial to investigate the modification of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) in advanced colorectal cancer patients during treatment with a weekly combination of cetuximab plus irinotecan. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-five metastatic colorectal cancer patients were prospectively evaluated for circulating levels of VEGF and IFN-gamma during the treatment wit…

Endoscopic Procedures through the Foramen Interventriculare of Monro under Stereotactical Conditions

1994

The foramen interventriculare of Monro is an anatomical narrowness for the endoscopic access to the third ventricle. The effective mechanical angle to pass the foramen interventriculare from a frontal bore hole depends on the diameter in the plane of entrance, the depth of the foramen, and the diameter of the endoscope. Under the pathological conditions of a hydrocephalus internus the foramen interventriculare is enlarged. By means of stereotactical guidance, it is possible to reach the third ventricle accurately without damaging anatomical structures around the foramen interventriculare. The endoscopic technique under stereotactical guidance using a rigid endoscope is sufficient and safe t…

An interdisciplinary study towards a multiaxial classification of male sexual dysfunction

1991

The classification of male sexual dysfunction (SD) was investigated in a multidisciplinary study involving a sample of 25 outpatients whose phenomenology, course and biologic comorbidity is described. All 25 patients were suffering from arousal disorders; 9 men complained of lack of desire and 9 of orgasm disorders. For the vast majority (19/25), the arousal disorder preceded the other sexual dysfunctions. Eleven patients suffered from a psychopathological disorder according to DSM-III or DSM-III-R (Axis I and II), with general anxiety, major depression and obsessive-compulsive personality being the most common disorders. Only 6 patients were free of any organic disorder or pathological lab…

Spontaneous fractures of the mandible concept & treatment strategy

2015

Background Spontaneous fractures of the mandible dispose a surgical challenge in comparisons to fractures caused by trauma due to several complicating factors. Additionally: controversies exist concerning the terminology of the field. Material and Methods We conducted a retrospective study of all patients with mandibular fractures, with exclusion of fractures of the coronoid process and the alveolar process, treated at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Aalborg University Hospital, Denmark between February 2003 and February 2013. Data collected from the medical records included sex, age, cause of fracture, site of fracture, and treatment. Results We identified 517 patients wi…
