A new polyphosphate calcium material with morphogenetic activity

2015

Abstract Polyphosphate [polyP] has been proven to elicit morphogenetic activity on bone cells. By applying mild reaction conditions, a Ca-polyP material that displays a hardness of ≈1.3 GPa has been fabricated. The Ca-polyP granules are prone to hydrolytic degradation during in vitro incubation of the cells, suggesting that this property is associated with the observed bioactivity.

Controversial issues in soft tissue solitary fibrous tumors: A pathological and molecular review

2019

The clinical evolution of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) remains unclear. Although various clinical, morphological and molecular criteria may indicate increased risk of malignancy, some SFT can still progress despite having a clearly benign appearance. Various risk stratification systems have been proposed, but unfortunately they are not sufficient to precisely determine the malignant potential. In this review, we discuss current knowledge on SFT, focusing on the following controversial issues: (i) the diverse morphologic spectrum: 'the great simulator;' (ii) malignant transformation or dedifferentiation; (iii) current risk stratification systems; and (iv) molecular factors associated with cl…

A Population-Based 3D Atlas of the Pathological Lumbar Spine Segment

2022

The spine is the load-bearing structure of human beings and may present several disorders, with low back pain the most frequent problem during human life. Signs of a spine disorder or disease vary depending on the location and type of the spine condition. Therefore, we aim to develop a probabilistic atlas of the lumbar spine segment using statistical shape modeling (SSM) and then explore the variability of spine geometry using principal component analysis (PCA). Using computed tomography (CT), the human spine was reconstructed for 24 patients with spine disorders and then the mean shape was deformed upon specific boundaries (e.g., by ±3 or ±1.5 standard deviation). Results dem…

Hsp60 and Hsp10 in Ageing

2009

HSP and molecular chaperones, both referred to in this chapter as chaperones, are key players in development and senescence. With regard to senescence, several issues are critical: the role of normal chaperones in the process of ageing itself and in preventing and controlling age-associated diseases, the role of defective chaperones (chaperonopathies) in the onset and progression of senescence and in the etiology of old-age diseases, the interaction of chaperones with the immune system, and the potential of chaperones as therapeutic agents for counteracting the deleterious effects of ageing on molecules and cells and for treating proteinopathies of the elderly (chaperonotherapy). All these …

Telomeres in the Brain Cortex of Patients with Major Depressive Disorder

2014

Telomeres are complex structures formed by the end of the DNA molecule at the tip of each chromosomal arm. The repeated (TTAGGG) telomeric sequence progressively shortens during lifespan because it cannot be replicated as somatic cells divide, and is highly susceptible to breakage by free radicals. Critically shortened telomeres activate the genetic program of cell senescence and/or apoptosis. The telomere length measured in peripheral blood leucocytes is considered a reliable marker of biological age, mortality risk and exposure to various pathological conditions, including cardiovascular disease, dementia, and metabolic syndrome. Telomere erosion has been observed in psychiatric disorders…

Expression of gelatinases (MMP-2, MMP-9) and cyclooxygenases (COX-1, COX-2) in some benign salivary gland tumors.

2012

Salivary gland tumors, most of which are rare benign tumors, represent a histologically heterogenous group with the greatest diversity of morphological and cellular features. The aim of this study is to analyse the expression and possible interactions between gelatinases (MMP-2, MMP-9) and cyclooxygenases (COX-1, COX-2) in some benign salivary gland tumors. We investigated the expression of gelatinases and cyclooxigenases in control salivary gland, Pleomorphic adenoma and Warthin's tumor through immunohistochemistry and Reverse Transcription – Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). We identified the expression of both classes of enzyme in normal samples and in the two types of pathological sampl…

Deep Metric Learning for Histopathological Image Classification

2022

Neural networks demonstrated to be effective in multiple classification tasks with performances that are similar to human capabilities. Notwithstanding, the viability of the application of this kind of tool in real cases passes through the possibility to interpret the provided results and let the human operator take his decision according to the information that is provided. This aspect is much more evident when the field of application is bound to people's health as for biomed-ical image classification. We propose for the classification of histopathological images a convolutional neural network that, through metric learning, learns a representation that gathers in homogeneous clusters the …

Muscle Dysmorphia in Adolescence: The Role of Parental Psychological Control on a Potential Behavioral Addiction

2019

Objective The study investigated the relationship between psychological parental control and muscle dysmorphia in adolescence, as form of exercise dependence, focusing also on the role of pathological worry. Methods Participants were 312 adolescents (140 boys and 172 girls) aged 16 to 18 years (M= 17.05; SD = 0.85) and completed the Muscle Dysmorphia Disorder Inventory, the Dependency-oriented and Achievement-oriented Parental Psychological Control, and the Penn State Worry Questionnaire. Results The results highlighted that boys showed higher level than girls in dependency-oriented and achievement-oriented parental psychological control and muscle dysmorphia. Furthermore, girls showed high…
