Reprogrammed induced pluripotent stem cells: how suitable could they be in reproductive medicine?

2008

Human embryonic stem cells have the greatest potential for regenerative and reproductive medicine; unfortunately, their full application is limited by ethical and technical problems. In order to overcome these problems and get patient specific pluripotent cells from somatic cells, the field of reprogramming has moved to the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells by overexpression of four transcription factors after viral infection of the patient's somatic cells. In the present paper we review the limitations and milestones of this technique in both regenerative and reproductive medicine.

In silico pace-mapping: prediction of left vs. right outflow tract origin in idiopathic ventricular arrhythmias with patient-specific electrophysiolo…

2019

Abstract Aims A pre-operative non-invasive identification of the site of origin (SOO) of outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias (OTVAs) is important to properly plan radiofrequency ablation procedures. Although some algorithms based on electrocardiograms (ECGs) have been developed to predict left vs. right ventricular origins, their accuracy is still limited, especially in complex anatomies. The aim of this work is to use patient-specific electrophysiological simulations of the heart to predict the SOO in OTVA patients. Methods and results An in silico pace-mapping procedure was designed and used on 11 heart geometries, generating for each case simulated ECGs from 12 clinically plausible SOO…

Patient-Specific Analysis of Ascending Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm with the Living Heart Human Model

2021

In ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms (ATAAs), aneurysm kinematics are driven by ventricular traction occurring every heartbeat, increasing the stress level of dilated aortic wall. Aortic elongation due to heart motion and aortic length are emerging as potential indicators of adverse events in ATAAs

409 Using rai-hc assessment instrument to classify home care clients in Finland based on fire emergency evacuation capacity

2016

Background When an uncontrollable fire is detected in a building there may be a 2–3 minutes window for the occupants to move to safety. Poor physical function and cognition may become critical factors in an evacuation situation. In this study a novel functional scale measuring emergency evacuation capacity of home care clients is presented. Methods A fire security expert visited about 250 home care clients assessing their evacuation capacities. For the evacuation capacity three categories were used: 1) is able to evacuate; 2) may be able; 3) unable to evacuate. This data was linked to comprehensive assessments of clients functional and health status performed by home care nurses using the i…

TRANS-FUSIMO - clinical translation of patient specific planning and conduction of FUS treatment in moving organs

2015

The movement of the target challenges the application of high intensive focused ultrasound (HiFU/MRgFUS) for the treatment of malignancies in moving abdominal organs such as liver and kidney. Moreover, the anatomical location of the lesion is often behind the rib cage. The physiology of the organs, the dynamic and complex blood perfusion impairs the energy disposition in the tissue due to the heat transfer within the organ. To explore the full potential of extracorporeal FUS to safely and precisely destroy tissue in the depth of a moving organ requires sophisticated software and advanced hardware. In the EU project FUSIMO (http://www.fusimo.eu) a software demonstrator for the patient specif…

Patient Specific Instrumentation for Total Knee Arthroplasty: a Literature Review

2014

During the past decade, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been markedly increased. Recently, patient-specific custom cutting guides have been commercially introduced in order to achieve an accurate component alignment during TKA. In fact, these cutting blocks are specific to a patient’s knee anatomy and should help the surgeons to perform bone cuts, reducing the complexity of conventional alignment and sizing tools. Nevertheless, there are critical arguments against patient-specific cutting guides for routine use, such as poor evidence and higher costs. Additionally, there are still no mild and long-term results available that describe the clinical outcomes following patient-specific instru…

Patient-specific computational evaluation of stiffness distribution in ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm

2021

Quantifying local aortic stiffness properties in vivo is acknowledged as essential to assess the severity of an ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA). Recently, the LESI (local extensional stiffness identification) methodology has been established to quantify non-invasively local stiffness properties of ATAAs using electrocardiographic-gated computed tomography (ECG-gated CT) scans. The aim of the current study was to determine the most sensitive markers of local ATAA stiffness estimation with the hypothesis that direct measures of local ATAA stiffness could better detect the high-risk patients. A cohort of 30 patients (12 BAV and 18 TAV) referred for aortic size evaluation by ECG-gated…

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEM) of a Customized Stent-Graft for Endovascular (EVAR) Treatment of Abdominal Aorti…

2023

Background: The treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is today commonly treated by inserting a stent-graft by the endovascular route, without resorting to open surgery. However, some clinical cases do not allow this less invasive approach, meaning that the stent-graft cannot be inserted and open surgery is used. Methods: In the study, we propose a fluid–structure interaction (FSI) analysis of an aneurysmatic aorta that could not be treated with Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR). The vessel is reconstructed through segmentation from CT scans and subsequently modeled on CAD software to create the surface and thickness of the vessel itself. Subsequently, we proceeded to carry out Comp…
