Sense of coherence and psychological well-being in cardiac patients: Is the association mediated by self-efficacy?
2019
Aim of the studyA large deal of research on cardiac patients concentrates on analyses of mutual relationships between sense of coherence and psychological well-being, sense of coherence and self-efficacy, or psychological well-being and self-efficacy. It has been proven that self-efficacy plays a crucial role as a mediator of the relationships between various psychological constructs.Subject or material and methodsA total number of 176 patients (82 women and 94 men), age 45-82 years (M = 58.56, SD = 8.25) participated in the study. All participants were patients admitted to the cardiology department with coronary heart disease and undergoing medical interventions. All participants were aske…
Self-efficacy as a mediator of the relationship between meaning in life and subjective well-being in cardiac patients
2019
BackgroundThe theoretical framework and empirical data suggest that the relationship between meaning in life and well-being might be mediated by self-efficacy. Based on the cognitive-affective processing system (CAPS), self-concordance model and empirical data, we assume that self-efficacy might also act as a mediator between meaning in life and subjective well-being in cardiac patients.Participants and procedureThis study was conducted in cardiology units in Poland. Patients who met the inclusion/exclusion criteria were approached by research assistants in the inpatient clinic and outpatient centre in a cardiology unit in Poland. Results of the 176 participants (82 women and 94 men) aged f…
SGLT2i and GLP-1RA in Cardiometabolic and Renal Diseases: From Glycemic Control to Adipose Tissue Inflammation and Senescence
2021
Background. Over the last few years, the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) has increased substantially in medical practice due to their documented benefits in cardiorenal and metabolic health. In this sense, and in addition to being used for glycemic control in diabetic patients, these drugs also have other favorable effects such as weight loss and lowering blood pressure, and more recently, they have been shown to have cardio and renoprotective effects with anti-inflammatory properties. Concerning the latter, the individual or associated use of these antihyperglycemic agents has been linked with a decrease in p…
HepatomiRNoma: The proposal of a new network of targets for diagnosis, prognosis and therapy in hepatocellular carcinoma
2015
Abstract: The diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) underwent a huge advancement in the last years. Recently, microRNAs (miRNAs) have been also studied to provide a new tool for early diagnosis of high risk patients, for prognostic classification to identify those patients who benefit cancer treatment and for predictive definition to select the right targeted drug. In this review we revised all the available data obtained to explore the role of miRNAs in HCC. This analysis led to identification of miRNAs which could gain a diagnostic, prognostic or predictive role. The results of studies on miRNAs involved in HCC are initial and far from providing scientific evidences to…
Astenozoospermy and mitochondrial DNA
2008
Male infertility, inability to fecundate the oocyte, is due to alterations of sperm characteristics (low number, low motility, altered morphology), to the quantity of semen or to the presence of alterations in the male genital line. 75% of infertile men deal with untreatable sub-fertility. Semen of 200 idiopathic astenozoospermic patients and individuals with normal seminal parameters as control, were analyzed. Results showed that mtDNA and Y chromosome regions from the motile fractions of patients and controls gave amplifications, while, the non-motile fractions of the same seminal samples did not give amplifications of ND5, ND6 and regions inside the D-loop (Carra E. et al.2002, 2004). We…
Gli effetti dell'Acamprosato sulla rimodulazione della trasmissione glutammatergica eccitatoria ed il suo impiego nel trattamento del craving da alco…
2015
Treatment with acamprosate is a valid tool to complement psychotherapy as it does not cause addiction, abuse or withdrawal of its suspension and does not interfere with other medications that patients often alcoholics must take. To evaluate the effectiveness, our study evaluated the effects of Acamprosate compared to γ-hydroxybutyrate in clinical-physiological and social health in a way indicator of a possible therapeutic success in terms of abstinence from alcohol and social reintegration. A total of 36 patients were observed, of which 5, 4 men and 1 woman at the Drug Addiction Service (Servizio Tossicodipendenze, Ser.T) Alcamo, and 31, 21 men and 10 women at the Ser.T of Palermo. As regar…
Metilazione del DNA in artrite reumatoide
2005
Neurological Consequences, Mental Health, Physical Care, and Appropriate Nutrition in Long-COVID-19.
2022
SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has caused a collapse of the world health systems. Now, vaccines and more effective therapies have reversed this crisis but the scenario is further aggravated by the appearance of a new pathology, occurring as SARS-CoV-2 infection consequence: the long-COVID-19. This term is commonly used to describe signs and symptoms that continue or develop after acute infection of COVID-19 up to several months. In this review, the consequences of the disease on mental health and the neurological implications due to the long-COVID are described. Furthermore, the appropriate nutritional approach and some recommendations to relieve the symptoms of the pathology are presented. Data colle…
PHD Thesis: Investigating Perceptual Features For a Natural Human Humanoid Robot Interaction Inside a Spontaneous Setting
Since robots have become part of human life, several studies have been done with the aim of discovering salient social rules at the basis of the collaboration between human beings and humanoid robot (Human Humanoid Interaction - HHI). The purpose is to have a common environment where human and humanoid robot could engage a proficous "dialogue" in order to share the "sense of co-presence" for common empathic tasks and goals. The humanoid robot must be in a position to interact with the human, and learn day by day from external environment, exactly as it occurs in human beings in the real life. In this sense, significant progresses have been reached, having a strong impact in each aspect of e…
The utility of the recognition memory test and the graded naming test in monitoring neurological patients
2007
Objectives. Repeated neuropsychological assessments are often used to monitor cognitive changes in neurological patients. In this study we document: test-retest reliability (TRR), group changes in performance and measures of intra-subject variability for two commonly used cognitive tests. Design. A large sample of neurological patients with either acute or degenerative neurological damage, and relatively static cognitive profiles, were retrospectively selected if they had been administered twice either the Recognition Memory Test (RMT) and/or the Graded Naming Test (GNT) within a 2-year interval. Results. Overall, the TRR of the RMT was reasonable in both patient groups, although slightly b…
