Some analytical considerations on two-scale relations

Scaling functions that generate a multiresolution analysis (MRA) satisfy, among other conditions, the so-called «two-scale relation» (TSR). In this paper we discuss a number of properties that follow from the TSR alone, independently of any MRA: position of zeros (mainly for continuous scaling functions), existence theorems (using fixed point and eigenvalue arguments) and orthogonality relation between integer translates. © 1994 Società Italiana di Fisica.

Pattern projection for subpixel resolved imaging in microscopy.

In this paper, we present a new approach providing super resolved images exceeding the geometrical limitation given by the detector pixel size of the imaging camera. The concept involves the projection of periodic patterns on top of the sample, which are then investigated under a microscope. Combining spatial scanning together with proper digital post-processing algorithm yields the improved geometrical resolution enhancement. This new method is especially interesting for microscopic imaging when the resolution of the detector is lower than the resolution due to diffraction.

Vector description of higher-order modes in photonic crystal fibers

We extensively study the propagation features of higher-order modes in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Our analysis is based on a full-vector modal technique specially adapted to accurately describe light propagation in PCF's. Unlike conventional fibers, PCF's exhibit a somewhat unusual mechanism for the generation of higher-order modes. Accordingly, PCF's are characterized by the constancy of the number of modes below a wavelength threshold. An explicit verification of this property is given through a complete analysis of the dispersion relations of higher-order modes in terms of the structural parameters of this kind of fiber. The CALMA system: an artificial neural network method for detecting masses and microcalcifications in digitized mammograms

The CALMA (Computer Assisted Library for MAmmography) project is a five years plan developed in a physics research frame in collaboration between INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) and many Italian hospitals. At present a large database of digitized mammographic images (more than 6000) was collected and a software based on neural network algorithms for the search of suspicious breast lesions was developed. Two tools are available: a microcalcification clusters hunter, based on supervised and unsupervised feedforward neural network, and a massive lesions searcher, based on a hibrid approach. Performance Studies of Pixel Hybrid Photon Detectors for the LHCb RICH Counters

The Pixel Hybrid Photon Detector is a vacuum tube with a multi-alkali photo cathode, high voltage cross-focused electron optics and an anode consisting of a silicon pixel detector bump-bonded to a readout CMOS electronic chip fully encapsulated in the device. The Pixel HPD fulfils the requirements of the Ring Imaging Cherenkov counters of the LHCb experiment at LHC. The performances of the Pixel HPD will be discussed with reference to laboratory measurements, Cherenkov light imaging in recent beam tests, image distortions due to a magnetic field.

Pattern recognition and PID for COMPASS RICH-1

A package for pattern recognition and PID by COMPASS RICH-1 has been developed and used for the analysis of COMPASS data collected in the years 2002 to 2004, and 2006-2007 with the upgraded RICH-1 photon detectors. It has allowed the full characterization of the detector in the starting version and in the upgraded one, as well as the PID for physics results. We report about the package structure and algorithms, and the detector characterization and PID results.

“RecPack” a reconstruction toolkit

We present a C++ toolkit to do tracking and vertex reconstruction. The toolkit incorporates common fitting methods, as the Kalman Filter, a framework to define a detector setup, a general navigation and a simple simulation. Furthermore, the toolkit provides a collection of interfaces which facilitates the addition of new fitting methods, trajectory models, geometrical objects, pattern recognition logic, etc. Although the toolkit was originally developed to be used in High Energy Physics, it could be applied to other fields.

Combining HR-MAS and In Vivo MRI and MRSI Information for Robust Brain Tumor Recognition

In this study we propose to classify short echotime brain MRSI data by using multimodal information coming from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) and high resolution magic angle spinning (HR-MAS), and to develop an advanced pattern recognition method that could help clinicians in diagnosing brain tumors. We study the impact of using HR-MAS information in combination with in vivo information for classifying brain tumors and we investigate which parameters influence our classification results.

Effect of Acoustic Wave Reflections on Space Charge Measurements with PEA Method

The Pulsed Electro-Acoustic (PEA) method is the most used technique for space charge detection in solid dielectrics. The methodology is largely employed in the field of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission and is based on the detection of acoustic waves generated by charges vibration. One of the most common problems arising during the detection is the presence of multiple reflections taking place due to the presence of means discontinuity in the different PEA cell components.
