Personality and Turnout: Results from the Finnish Longitudinal Studies

2011

Scholars in the field of electoral participation have for long been aware that turnout is strongly connected to sociopsychological variables such as religiosity, party identification, political interest and sense of political efficacy. The impact of personality characteristics has remained largely unexplored until recently. Based on the Jyvaskyla Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development (JYLS, original N = 369), this article analyses the links between individuals' personality traits and their propensity to vote at ages 36, 42 and 50. The personality traits are measured by using the five-factor model of personality consisting of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness,…

Ideas and lives across the Atlantic. The American Anarchism in the Galician libertarian press

2019

In this article we will analyse, from a transnational history point of view, the presence of American anarchism in the Galician libertarian press until 1936. In the 19th and 20h centuries, the transatlantic migrations contributed to develop a dense network of contacts and relationships between Galicia and American countries. This network involves anarchist militants on both sides of the Ocean. The Galician anarchists have a close collaboration with her Americans libertarian comrades; and many Galician militants are actively committed in the labour movement of their host countries. The Galician libertarian press shows this relationship and this participation in different ways (articles, cont…

Images, carrières et modes de vie des enseignantes. Des années soixante à la décennie quatre-vingt-dix

1995

Between the two World Wars, women teachers were mosûy single ; since the 1970's, teachers who are married and bring up children have become the norm among high school teachers. In romantic fiction, one lays the stress on the distress of "lonely" women or on the conflicting roles of teachers who are also wives and mothers. Beyond these necessarily limiting images, this article aims at shedding light on the processes which come into play to determine different types of relationships with the teaching profession and career. Women's school ana university background, their husbands' career, the collective interests, play a role in the progress of professional life which in its turn influences th…

Multiple normalized solutions for a Sobolev critical Schrödinger-Poisson-Slater equation

2021

We look for solutions to the Schr\"{o}dinger-Poisson-Slater equation $$- \Delta u + \lambda u - \gamma (|x|^{-1} * |u|^2) u - a |u|^{p-2}u = 0 \quad \text{in} \quad \mathbb{R}^3, $$ which satisfy \begin{equation*} \int_{\mathbb{R}^3}|u|^2 \, dx = c \end{equation*} for some prescribed $c>0$. Here $ u \in H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$, $\gamma \in \mathbb{R},$ $ a \in \mathbb{R}$ and $p \in (\frac{10}{3}, 6]$. When $\gamma >0$ and $a > 0$, both in the Sobolev subcritical case $p \in (\frac{10}{3}, 6)$ and in the Sobolev critical case $p=6$, we show that there exists a $c_1>0$ such that, for any $c \in (0,c_1)$, the equation admits two solutions $u_c^+$ and $u_c^-$ which can be characterized respectively…

Quasisymmetric spheres over Jordan domains

2015

Let $\Omega$ be a planar Jordan domain. We consider double-dome-like surfaces $\Sigma$ defined by graphs of functions of $dist( \cdot ,\partial \Omega)$ over $\Omega$. The goal is to find the right conditions on the geometry of the base $\Omega$ and the growth of the height so that $\Sigma$ is a quasisphere, or quasisymmetric to $\mathbb{S}^2$. An internal uniform chord-arc condition on the constant distance sets to $\partial \Omega$, coupled with a mild growth condition on the height, gives a close-to-sharp answer. Our method also produces new examples of quasispheres in $\mathbb{R}^n$, for any $n\ge 3$.

Perturbations of the derivative along periodic orbits

2006

International audience; We show that a periodic orbit of large period of a diffeomorphism or flow, either admits a dominated splitting of a prescribed strength, or can be turned into a sink or a source by a C1-small perturbation along the orbit. As a consequence we show that the linear Poincaré flow of a C1-vector field admits a dominated splitting over any robustly transitive set.

A future of journalism beyond the objectivity-dialogue divide? : Hybridity in the news of entrepreneurial journalists

2019

As pioneers of new ideas and practices, many entrepreneurial journalists spearhead the change of journalism towards hybridity. By applying appraisal theory, this article examines a hybrid of objectivity and dialogue in daily news articles by five entrepreneurial journalism outlets – Axios, MustRead, National Observer, The Skimm and the Voice of San Diego. For comparative purposes, a dataset from three legacy media outlets was also analysed. The results show that the entrepreneurial journalism outlets employ journalistic dialogue in otherwise stylistically objective news texts notably more often than do legacy media outlets. Dialogic registers provide subtle, non-partisan assessments of eve…

Ma‘dûle Önermelerde Varlıksal İçerik Sorunu: Fahreddin er-Râzî-Kutbüddin et-Tahtânî Tartışması

2019

This paper addresses discussions in post-Avicennan Arabic logic on the definition of metathetic propositions and their status in relation to existential import requirements, focusing on the arguments made by Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d. 606/1210) and the counter-arguments by Quṭb al-Dīn al-Rāzī al-Taḥtānī (d. 766/1365), who both establish their positions in the framework drawn by the most prominent figure in the tradition of classical Arabic logic, Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, d. 428/1037). In the latter’s works, the problem of the existential import requirement in metathetic propositions (ma‘dūla) are thoroughly discussed and Avicenna seems to have presumed the existential import as a truth-condition f…

La emisión númida de siga (ss. II-I A.C.) con jinete lanceando

2018

Argumentative reasoning and taxonomic analysis for the identification of medical errors

2015

Telemedicine consists of the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the practice of medicine. The massive digitalisation of the society is changing the behaviour of ordinary people even in medical sectors. The impact of digitisation is also having impacts on teleexpertise, where a medical professional can remotely ask some advices through the use of ICTs to provide treatment to a patient in critical conditions in remote environment. However, sometimes the outcome of such advice obtained remotely can lead to medical errors. In these situations, it is important to determine whether the causes of the errors could have been avoidable or not for the purposes of establishing …
