Alcohol-impaired Walking in 16 Countries: A Theory-Based Investigation.

2021

Alcohol is a global risk factor for road trauma. Although drink driving has received most of the scholarly attention, there is growing evidence of the risks of alcohol-impaired walking. Alcohol-impaired pedestrians are over-represented in fatal crashes compared to non-impaired pedestrians. Additionally, empirical evidence shows that alcohol intoxication impairs road-crossing judgements. Besides some limited early research, much is unknown about the global prevalence and determinants of alcohol-impaired walking. Understanding alcohol-impaired walking will support health promotion initiatives and injury prevention. The present investigation has three aims: (1) compare the prevalence of alcoho…

Not gendered… but different from each other? A structural equation model for explaining risky road behaviors of female and male pedestrians.

2020

Abstract As alternative transportation is getting more and more fashionable, and more people worldwide are "shifting" to walking trips, even for their daily commuting, traffic crashes suffered by pedestrians are still a great concern for road safety and public health researchers and practitioners. In this regard, risky or "aberrant" road behaviors have emerged, during the last few years, as a key issue to be considered for crash prevention. Nevertheless, the idea of a "generic pedestrian" is getting re-evaluated, and analyzing key features, such as gender, seems to be crucial for understanding pedestrians' performance and safety outcomes. Objective The objective of this study was to examine…

Right-turn Bypass Lanes at Roundabouts: Geometric Schemes and Functional Analysis

2012

Right-turn bypass lanes can be implemented in conventional and innovative roundabout intersections to increase the capacity and improve the global functional performances. The Right-turn bypass lanes (also called slip lanes) can be distinguished according to the planimetric layout and the entry control type (stop, yield slip or Free Flow acceleration lane). This paper presents a closed-form model for the estimation of capacity, delays and level of service of roundabout equipped with Right-turn bypass lanes, considering the effect of geometric slip lane schemes, control type, vehicular and pedestrian flow. In order to examine the traffic conditions which can benefit from slip lane roundabout…

A Physiological Approach for Minimizing Dead Reckoning Velocity Readings Drifts

2018

The evolution of the geo-positioning methods made Dead Reckoning (DR) one of the most important concern due to its performance in indoor pedestrian localization systems. This paper focuses on implementing an approach that relies on physiological parameters to minimize additive velocity error due to noise in pedestrian DR system.

A Planning and Control System for Self-Driving Racing Vehicles

2018

Autonomous robots will soon enter our everyday life as self-driving cars. These vehicles are designed to behave according to certain sets of cooperative rules, such as traffic ones, and to respond to events that might be unpredictable in their occurrence but predictable in their nature, such as a pedestrian suddenly crossing a street, or another car losing control. As civilian autonomous cars will cross the road, racing autonomous cars are under development, which will require superior Artificial Intelligence Drivers to perform in structured but uncertain conditions. We describe some preliminary results obtained during the development of a planning and control system as key elements of an A…

A GIS-Based Method to Assess the Pedestrian Accessibility to the Railway Stations

2018

Modern cities, affected by congestion, atmospheric and acoustic pollution, land consumption, should change and return to being on a human scale, rather than designed for cars. Proper land-use planning, infrastructure improvement and implementation of targeted interventions have to ensure that there is a rapprochement of citizens about the public transport, in order to reduce these problems. An important aspect of modal choice by users of the public transport system is, however, linked to the quality of the pedestrian routes. In fact, every journey made by public transport begins and finishes on foot. Therefore, studying pedestrian accessibility to transit stations and the walkability of the…

Urban layout, landscape features and pedestrian usage

2007

ACL; International audience; The analysis of the factors which condition walking in the urban environment is an important issue in urban planning. The present work is based on the hypothesis that the landscape, in its entirety, plays a role in encouraging pedestrian movements. The frequency of pedestrian traffic in the streets is analyzed as a function of accessibility and landscape preferences with the help of a conceptual framework. By defining accessibility as the measurement of the integration of the space syntax, preferences are researched using multiple stepwise regression of visual variables. This method has been applied to an area in the city of Lille (France) where the pedestrian f…

Pedestrian Safety Indicators Study

2008

Pedestrian mobility can be considered an important feature in a new model of town organization, being suitable for the newly urbanized areas as well as the old quarters and the outskirts, places where streets and squares, once devised for a pedestrian based mobility, were eventually overcame by an ever increasing motorized traffic. Enhancing pedestrian mobility could bring new life and activities into the old and historic parts of the town reviving their original identities. The last decade’s increase in the recourse to private cars requires improvements in pedestrian mobility quality. This can be achieved by building new infrastructures, limiting the use of private cars, improving public t…
