Hypothenar hammer syndrome: A multicenter case-control study

2013

Background The rarely diagnosed hypothenar hammer syndrome (HHS) is due to vascular damage to the distal part of the ulnar artery probably caused by acute or repetitive blunt trauma to the hypothenar region. To date, mainly case reports have been published, while epidemiological data are almost absent. Aim To identify potential risk factors for HHS. Method An interview-based multicenter case–control study of 71 patients with HHS and 105 matched controls was conducted with standardized questions regarding disease specific variables, occupation, exposure of the hands to different types of trauma in occupational and leisure context. Medical data were verified from individual medical records. R…

Prescription of automatic bilevel ventilation (AutoBI) in sleep-disordered breathing: analysis according to diagnosis and occurrence of comorbidities

2017

CPAP is the first-choice treatment for obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (O-SDB), while the criteria to prescribe AutoBI are undefined. Trials of AutoBI ventilation in patients (pts) treated for O-SDB from January 2015 to October 2016 (64 out of 242 titrations) were reviewed to assess: a) the clinical characteristics of these pts, b) the reason to shift from CPAP to AutoBI, c) the compliance to prescribed treatment. AutoBI was used in cases of intolerance to high therapeutic CPAP levels (n=21) or incomplete resolution of SDB on CPAP (n=43). The Table reports the differences between CPAP or AutoBI pts CPAP SDB diagnosis was: 82% OSA, 18% OSA-COPD Overlap in the CPAP group; 39% OSA, 28% …

The value of Ems Mineral Salts in the treatment of rhinosinusitis in children

2005

Summary The treatment of rhinosinusitis seen in the light of uncertain pathogenesis and variable symptoms is under discussion and ranges from the administration of antibiotics, decongestants and anti-allergic agents to no treatment. In this randomized, prospective, double-blind and controlled study the effect of a 14-day treatment (1–2 sprays into each nostril t.d.) with either isotonic Ems Mineral Salts (EMS) solution (Siemens & Co., Bad Ems, Germany) or xylometazoline solution (0.05%) was tested in children (n = 66) aged 2–6 years. Main outcomes: the degree of mucosal inflammation, nasal patency, general state of health, condition of the middle ear, auditory function as well as an assessm…

Late-asthma onset and associated factors

2016

Although asthma is usually considered to originate in childhood, adult-onset is being increasingly reported. Aim: to assess factors associated to early- (<18 yrs) and late-onset (≥18 yrs) asthma. Methods: Data from a web-based Italian severe/uncontrolled asthma (SUA) registry (released in 2014), including 577 SUA subjects from 6 clinical and epidemiological Italian centres (Pisa1, Perugia, Ancona, Verona, Palermo, Pisa2). Results: 77.5% of SUA subjects had a late-onset asthma. Among subjects with early-onset asthma there were higher frequencies of allergic asthma (92.1 vs 76.4%), asthma familiarity (52.8 vs 42.8%), seasonal symptoms (51.3 vs 27.6%), active smoking habits (8.5 vs 4.4%) and u…

VIH et noma au Burkina Faso

2012

Summary Introduction Noma is a “gangrenous” disease beginning in gums and spreading to other parts of the face. It usually occurs in undernourished children with bad orodental hygiene. Its incidence in adults is increasing. HIV infection is very common in African countries. We had for objective to compare noma characteristics in patients with, or without, HIV. Material and methods This retrospective and descriptive study included patients managed for noma in our unit from January 1988 to December 2007. The clinical, epidemiological, and outcome data of patients treated for noma were compared according to HIV infection status. Results Two hundred and twelve patients were included and 14 (6.6…

Headache attributed to head or neck trauma

2010

Publisher Summary This chapter presents an overview of all types of posttraumatic headache (PTH): acute PTH, chronic PTH, and headache after a whiplash injury, taking account of the definition and latest criteria of International Headache Classification II (ICHD-II). Headache is a symptom that may occur after injury to the head, neck, or brain. PTH is a cardinal symptom of the “postconcussion syndrome” and may be accompanied by somatic, psychological, or cognitive disturbances. PTH is always a new-onset headache resulting from brain, head, and sometimes neck injury, and can simulate the clinical characteristics of several primary headaches. Severe, moderate, and mild head injuries can cause…

Relevanz von Infektionskrankheiten in einer Kinderarztpraxis

1993

According to official statistics, infectious diseases only play a minor role in German children. To test this assumption, 1685/3405 charts of a private pediatrician were randomly chosen for further evaluation. 1112/1685 children had been seen in the office during the study period, 934 of them because of an infectious disease (83%). 700/934 charts were further reviewed in a standardized fashion. Pharyngo-tonsillitis was the most frequent diagnosis (18.6%), followed by (non-obstructive) bronchitis (18.5%), infectious diseases of the skin (10.2%) and Otitis media (9.9%). Typical "childhood diseases" (measles, mumps, rubella, varicella) only played a minor role. For some diseases age-specific a…
