Acquisition of Structure-guiding and Structure-forming Properties during Maturation from the Pro-silicatein to the Silicatein Form

2012

Silicateins are the key enzymes involved in the enzymatic polycondensation of the inorganic scaffold of the skeletal elements of the siliceous sponges, the spicules. The gene encoding pro-silicatein is inserted into the pCold TF vector, comprising the gene for the bacterial trigger factor. This hybrid gene is expressed in Escherichia coli and the synthesized fusion protein is purified. The fusion protein is split into the single proteins with thrombin by cleavage of the linker sequence present between the two proteins. At 23 °C, the 87 kDa trigger factor-pro-silicatein fusion protein is cleaved to the 51 kDa trigger factor and the 35 kDa pro-silicatein. The cleavage process proceeds and res…

POLYASPARTAMIDE-POLYLACTIDE GRAFT COPOLYMERS WITH TUNABLE PROPERTIES FOR THE REALIZATION OF FLUORESCENT NANOPARTICLES FOR IMAGING

2015

Here, the synthesis and the characterization of novel amphiphilic graft copolymers with tunable properties, useful in obtaining polymeric fluorescent nanoparticles for application in imaging, are described. These copolymers are obtained by chemical conjugation of rhodamine B (RhB) moieties, polylactic acid (PLA), and O-(2-aminoethyl)-O'-methyl poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide (PHEA). In particular, PHEA is first functionalized with RhB to obtain PHEA-RhB with a derivatization degree in RhB (DDRhB ) equal to 0.55 mol%. By varying the reaction conditions, different amounts of PLA are grafted on PHEA-RhB to obtain PHEA-RhB-PLA with DDPLA equal to 1.9, 4…

Portable Video Supercomputing

2004

As inexpensive imaging chips and wireless telecommunications are incorporated into an increasing array, of portable products, the need for high efficiency, high throughput embedded processing will become an important challenge in computer architecture. Videocentric applications, such wireless videoconferencing, real-time video enhancement and analysis, and new, immersive modes of distance education, will exceed the computational capabilities of current microprocessor and digital signal processor (DSP) architectures. A new class of embedded computers, portable video supercomputers, will combine supercomputer performance with the energy efficiency required for deployment in portable systems. …

On the listing and random generation of hybrid binary trees

1994

We consider in this paper binary trees whose internal nodes are either associative or non-associative. Hybrid binary trees are equivalence classes with respect to the associative property. We count, list and generate randomly hybrid binary trees using Fibonacci numbers.

Generation of Valid Labeled Binary Trees

2003

International audience; Generating binary trees is a well-known problem. In this paper, we add some constraints to leaves of these trees. Such trees are used in the morphing of polygons, where a polygon P is represented by a binary tree T and each angle of P is a weight on a leaf of T. In the following, we give two algorithms to generate all binary trees, without repetitions, having the same weight distribution to their leaves and representing all parallel polygons to P.

Data Compression Using Wavelet and Local Cosine Transforms

2015

The chapter describes an algorithm that compresses two-dimensional data arrays, which are piece-wise smooth in one direction and have oscillating events in the other direction. Seismic, hyper-spectral and fingerprints data, for example, have such a mixed structure. The transform part of the compression process is an algorithm that combines wavelet and local cosine transform (LCT). The quantization and the entropy coding parts of the compression are taken from the SPIHT codec. To efficiently apply the SPIHT codec to a mixed coefficients array, reordering of the LCT coefficients takes place. On the data arrays, which have the mixed structure, this algorithm outperforms other algorithms that a…

The effect of wavelet and discrete cosine transform compression of digital radiographs on the detection of subtle proximal caries. ROC analysis.

2007

The study compared diagnostic performances of 2 different image compression methods: JPEG (discrete cosine transform; Joint Photographic Experts Group compression standard) versus JPEG2000 (discrete wavelet transform), both at a compression ratio of 12:1, from the original uncompressed TIFF radiograph with respect to the detection of non-cavitated carious lesions. Therefore, 100 approximal surfaces of 50 tooth pairs were evaluated on the radiographs by 10 experienced observers using a 5-point confidence scale. Observations were carried out on a standardized viewing monitor under subdued light conditions. The proportion of diseased surfaces was balanced to approximately 50% to avoid bias. Tr…

Weight-based dosing: Which impact on efficacy and safety of therapy?

2004

Abstract Pegylated interferons (PEG-IFNs) in combination with ribavirin represent the most recent advance in the treatment of patients withchronic hepatitis C (CHC): two large clinical trials have shown a superior efficacy in clearing HCV in almost 60% of treated naive patients. Responses to antiviral treatment of CHC vary according to both viral and host factors. Managing patients with CHC infection requires individualised treatment strategies to optimise outcomes. Several landmark publications on PEG-IFNs have reported that weight is a significant predictive factor for SVR in the treatment of CHC with fixed-dose drug administration. With fixed-dose treatment, there is a direct correlation…

Comparing analytical methods to detect SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater

2021

Wastewater based epidemiology (WBE) has emerged as a reliable strategy to assess the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Recent publications suggest that SARS-CoV-2 detection in wastewater is technically feasible; however, many different protocols are available and most of the methods applied have not been properly validated. To this end, different procedures to concentrate and extract inactivated SARS-CoV-2 and surrogates were initially evaluated. Urban wastewater seeded with gamma-irradiated SARS-CoV-2, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), and mengovirus (MgV) was used to test the concentration efficiency of an aluminum-based adsorption-precipitation method and a polyethylene…

Conical nanopores highlight the pro-aggregating effects of pyrimethanil fungicide on Aβ(1-42) peptides and dimeric splitting phenomena.

2022

International audience; The Aβ(1-42) aggregation is a key event in the physiopathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Exogenous factors such as environmental pollutants, and more particularly pesticides, can corrupt Aβ(1-42) assembly and could influence the occurrence and pathophysiology of AD. However, pesticide involvement in the early stages of Aβ(1-42) aggregation is still unknown. Here, we employed conical track-etched nanopore in order to analyse the Aβ(1-42) fibril formation in the presence of pyrimethanil, a widely used fungicide belonging to the anilinopyrimidine class. Our results evidenced a pro-aggregating effect of pyrimethanil on Aβ(1-42). Aβ(1-42) assemblies were successfully d…
