Ventastega curonica and the origin of tetrapod morphology.

2008

The gap in our understanding of the evolutionary transition from fish to tetrapod is beginning to close thanks to the discovery of new intermediate forms such as Tiktaalik roseae. Here we narrow it further by presenting the skull, exceptionally preserved braincase, shoulder girdle and partial pelvis of Ventastega curonica from the Late Devonian of Latvia, a transitional intermediate form between the 'elpistostegids' Panderichthys and Tiktaalik and the Devonian tetrapods (limbed vertebrates) Acanthostega and Ichthyostega. Ventastega is the most primitive Devonian tetrapod represented by extensive remains, and casts light on a part of the phylogeny otherwise only represented by fragmentary ta…

Postprocessing algorithm for automated analysis of pelvic intraoperative neuromonitoring signals

2016

Abstract Two dimensional pelvic intraoperative neuromonitoring (pIONM®) is based on electric stimulation of autonomic nerves under observation of electromyography of internal anal sphincter (IAS) and manometry of urinary bladder. The method provides nerve identification and verification of its’ functional integrity. Currently pIONM® is gaining increased attention in times where preservation of function is becoming more and more important. Ongoing technical and methodological developments in experimental and clinical settings require further analysis of the obtained signals. This work describes a postprocessing algorithm for pIONM® signals, developed for automated analysis of huge amount of …

Tailored treatments in internal rectal prolapse

2020

Background: Internal rectal prolapse is commonly reported in patients suffering pelvic floor disorders, such as obstructive defecation and incontince. Unfortunately, its treatment not always offers a symptoms resolution. Material and methods: To investigate the correct management and its influence in symptoms resolution, we investigated patients submitted to hierarchic therapeutic options from conservative to surgical treatments. An evaluation of the appropriate treatment tailored on the entity of the prolapse was proposed. Results: We investigated 84 patients [64 F, 20 M (median age 52)]. In 44 a symptoms resolution was obtained with medical therapy. To 40 patients biofeedback rehabilitati…

Mesh complications following prolapse surgery: management and outcome.

2011

Abstract Objective This is a description of complications following prolapse surgery with the use of alloplastic materials, the management and outcome. Study design 54 women have been referred to Mainz, urogynecology referral center due to complications following mesh-augmented prolapse surgery. Results The complaints who lead to the admission are expressed by the new terminology and standardized classification for complications arising directly from the insertion of prostheses and grafts in female pelvic floor surgery [1] . Pain (66.7%), mesh erosion (55.6%) and vaginal discharge (48.1%) were the most frequent complaints. Revision was performed after a median time of 27.2 months post mesh …

July 2003: 62-year-old female with progressive muscular weakness

2004

The July 2003 Case of the Month (COM). A 62-year-old female patient experienced progressive muscular weakness over the last ten years, involving shoulder and pelvic girdle muscles, paraspinal and facial muscles. A biopsy was taken from the left deltoid muscle where hepatitis vaccination had taken place 4 weeks previously. The specimen revealed macrophagic myofasciitis due to the injection of aluminium-bound vaccines. The finding can be reproduced experimentally by injecting vaccines in rats. The pathomechanism is supposed to involve immune stimulation due to long term persistence of the adjuvant. Macrophagic myofasciitis has been suggested to occasionally cause myopathy but is supposed to b…

A Revised Sex Assessment of the Epigravettian Human Remain ST1 from San Teodoro Cave (Messina, Sicily)

2013

Bias in skeletal sexing is well known and depends upon the completeness of the skeletal remains. The problem is very hard concerning prehistorical remains. We applied ‘Visual methods’ and ‘Probabilistic Sex Diagnosis’ (DSP) on the coxal bones on the Epigravettian skeleton (ST1) from San Teodoro (Messina, Sicily). On the basis of cranial characters and the overall robustness of the postcranial skeleton, it was suggested, since the time of the discovery, a male sex for ST1. This determination was later modified on the basis of the pelvic girdle morphology, and the skeleton was attributed the female sex for many years by large consensus. Our results indicate without ambiguity that ST1 is a mal…

The Effect of Medium-Intensity Electromagnetic Stimulation on Pelvic Floor Muscle Activity in a Young Woman—A Case Report

2021

Aims In recent years, devices for deep electromagnetic stimulation have been implemented in clinical practice. These devices generate pulses with a frequency of 1 to 50 Hz and magnetic induction of up to 2.5 T. Due to the possibility of producing or an effective deep-penetrating mechanical vibration, electromagnetic stimulation is increasingly used in the physiotherapy of urogynecological disorders. This study aimed to analyse of the effect of deep electromagnetic stimulation on the bioelectrical activity of pelvic floor muscles in a young woman. Case report The case of a 24-year-old woman with no diagnosed stress urinary incontinence is presented. The subject underwent electromagnetic stim…

The LANN technique to reduce postoperative functional morbidity in laparoscopic radical pelvic surgery

2005

BACKGROUND: We investigated the feasibility and advantages of introducing Laparoscopic Neuro-Navigation (LANN) into the field of laparoscopic gynecologic radical pelvic surgery. STUDY DESIGN: In a prospective pilot study, 261 consecutive patients underwent laparoscopic radical pelvic surgery for cervical cancer or deep infiltrating endometriosis of the parametria. During the procedure, dissection and electrostimulation, and consequently, sparing of the pelvic parasympathetic nerves by transection of the parametria, were performed. Postoperative bladder dysfunction was documented. RESULTS: Laparoscopic dissection and electrostimulation of the pelvic splanchnic nerves were feasible in all pat…
