Wild brown trout affected by historical mining in the Cévennes national park, France.
2011
8 pages; International audience; In the protected area of the Cévennes National Park (Southern France), 114 wild brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) were captured at six locations affected to different extents by historical mining and metallurgy dating from the Iron Age to Modern Times. Cadmium and lead in trout livers and muscles reflect high sediment contamination, although an age-related effect was also detected for hepatic metal concentrations. Lead isotope signatures confirm exposure to drainage from mining and metallurgical waste. Developmental instability, assessed by fluctuating asymmetry, is significantly correlated with cadmium and lead concentrations in trout tissues, suggesting th…
Fetal Urogenital Sinus with Consecutive Hydrometrocolpos because of Labial Fusion: Prenatal Diagnostic Difficulties and Postpartal Therapeutic Manage…
2006
Objective: To elucidate the differential diagnoses of tumorous dilations in the fetal pelvic region detected by prenatal ultrasound and the postnatal management demonstrated on a fetus with 29 weeks of gestation with a retrovesical located bottle-like cystic structure measuring 54 × 31 × 27 mm within the pelvis. Postnatal findings were a labial fusion and a consecutive hydrometrocolpos due to a urethrovaginal fistula. Method: Case report of a fetus affected by an intricate cloacal anomaly. Results: The long-term prognosis for this nonsyndromic form of hydrometrocolpos without any other structural defects or organic failures after oper…
Characterization of postural control impairment in women with fibromyalgia
2018
[EN] The main goal of this cross-sectional study was to detect whether women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) have altered postural control and to study the sensory contribution to postural control. We also explored the possibility that self-induced anxiety and lower limb strength may be related to postural control. For this purpose, 129 women within an age range of 40 to 70 years were enrolled. Eighty of the enrolled women had FMS. Postural control variables, such as Ellipse, Root mean square (RMS) and Sample entropy (SampEn), in both directions (i.e. mediolateral and anteroposterior), were calculated under five different conditions. A force plate was used to register the center of pressur…
Laparoscopic endopelvic sacral implantation of a Brindley controller for recovery of bladder function in a paralyzed patient
2008
Background: A number of techniques are being investigated to accomplish bladder control recovery in paralyzed patients using the neurostimulation, but currently, all techniques are based on the dorsal implantation of the electrodes using a laminectomy. Methods: On 27 April 2006 we performed a laparoscopic implantation of a Finetech-Brindley bladder controller on the endopelvic sacral roots in a Th8 completely paralyzed woman who had previously undergone the removal of a Brindley controller due to an arachnoiditis after extrathecal implantation with intradural sacral deafferentation. Results: We required about 3.5 h for the entire surgical procedure; no complications occurred and the patient…
Robotic transanal total mesorectal excision: Is the future now?
2021
Total mesorectal excision (TME) is the standard surgical treatment for the curative radical resection of rectal cancers. Minimally invasive TME has been gaining ground favored by the continuous technological advancements. New procedures, such as transanal TME (TaTME), have been introduced to overcome some technical limitations, especially in low rectal tumors, obese patients, and/or narrow pelvis. The earliest TaTME reports showed promising results when compared with the conventional laparoscopic TME. However, recent publications raised concerns regarding the high rates of anastomotic leaks or local recurrences observed in national series. Robotic TaTME (R-TaTME) has been proposed as a nove…
Bone metastases in soft tissue sarcoma patients: A survey of natural, prognostic value, and treatment.
2012
10063 Background: Given the limited data currently available, we surveyed the natural history of bone metastases in patients affected by soft tissue sarcoma (STS). Methods: This retrospective, multicenter, observational study evaluated data from 135 patients with STS metastatic to the bone who presented between 2001 and 2011. For all patients, we recorded the primary tumor histological subtype, bone metastases characteristics (onset, site), type of treatment received (surgery, radiotherapy, zoledronic acid), type and frequency of skeletal related events (SRE) and disease outcome. Results: The most represented histological subtypes among the enrolled patients were leiomyosarcoma (27%), angi…
Classification of Fragility Fractures of the Pelvis
2017
The characteristics of fragility fractures of the pelvis are different from pelvic fractures in adolescents and adults. There are specific fracture morphologies such as U- or H-shaped fractures of the sacrum and bilateral fractures. The classification systems of AO/ASIF and Young-Burgess reflect the trauma mechanism and the type of instability in high-energy pelvic injuries. Not all types of fragility fractures of the pelvic ring fit into these classification systems. A new, comprehensive classification (FFP classification) includes all morphologies of fragility fractures of the pelvis, whether acute or chronic. It provides a framework for how to look at these lesions. The first criterion o…
Significant liver fibrosis assessed using liver transient elastography is independently associated with low bone mineral density in patients with non…
2017
Background Metabolic bone disorders frequently occur in patients with chronic liver disease; however, the association between liver fibrosis and bone mineral density in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is unclear. Methods This is a cross-sectional analysis of 231 asymptomatic subjects (160 women, 61.6 years old) from a university hospital setting, between February 2012 and December 2014. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at the lumbar spine, femur neck, and total hip using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Liver fibrosis and steatosis were assessed using transient elastography. Results Among a total of 231 individuals, 129 subjects (55.8%) had NAFLD. BMDs …
Three-dimensional geometric morphometrics of thorax-pelvis covariation and its potential for predicting the thorax morphology: A case study on Kebara…
2020
The skeletal torso is a complex structure of outstanding importance in understanding human body shape evolution, but reconstruction usually entails an element of subjectivity as researchers apply their own anatomical expertise to the process. Among different fossil reconstruction methods, 3D geometric morphometric techniques have been increasingly used in the last decades. Two-block partial least squares analysis has shown great potential for predicting missing elements by exploiting the covariation between two structures (blocks) in a reference sample: one block can be predicted from the other one based on the strength of covariation between blocks. The first aim of this study is to test w…
