SpecTrap: precision spectroscopy of highly charged ions—status and prospects

2013

We present the status of the SpecTrap experiment currently being commissioned in the framework of the HITRAP project at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. SpecTrap is a cryogenic Penning trap experiment dedicated to high-accuracy laser spectroscopy of highly charged ions (HCI) near rest. Determination of fine structure and hyperfine structure splittings in HCI with an expected relative spectral resolution of 10−7 will offer the possibility to test quantum electrodynamics in strong fields with unprecedented accuracy. Recently, we have demonstrated trapping and laser Doppler cooling of singly charged magnesium ions in SpecTrap. We report on the status of the experimental apparatus, measurements and pre…

Resolution of Single Spin Flips of a Single Proton

2013

The spin magnetic moment of a single proton in a cryogenic Penning trap was coupled to the particle's axial motion with a superimposed magnetic bottle. Jumps in the oscillation frequency indicate spin-flips and were identified using a Bayesian analysis.

High-precision mass spectrometer for light ions

2020

The precise knowledge of the atomic masses of light atomic nuclei, e.g. the proton, deuteron, triton and helion, is of great importance for several fundamental tests in physics. However, the latest high-precision measurements of these masses carried out at different mass spectrometers indicate an inconsistency of five standard deviations. To determine the masses of the lightest ions with a relative precision of a few parts per trillion and investigate this mass problem a cryogenic multi-Penning trap setup, LIONTRAP (Light ION TRAP), was constructed. This allows an independent and more precise determination of the relevant atomic masses by measuring the cyclotron frequency of single trapped …

Observation of Spin Flips with a Single Trapped Proton

2011

Radio-frequency induced spin transitions of one individual proton are observed for the first time. The spin quantum jumps are detected via the continuous Stern-Gerlach effect, which is used in an experiment with a single proton stored in a cryogenic Penning trap. This is an important milestone towards a direct high-precision measurement of the magnetic moment of the proton and a new test of the matter-antimatter symmetry in the baryon sector.

Special Relativity and the Single Antiproton: Fortyfold Improved Comparison ofp¯andpCharge-to-Mass Ratios

1995

The measured ratio of charge-to-mass ratios for the antiproton and proton is $1.0000000015\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0000000011$. This $1$ part in ${10}^{9}$ comparison ( $1$ ppb) is possible because a single $\overline{p}$ or $p$ is now directly observed while trapped in an open access Penning trap. The comparison is the most accurate mass spectrometry of particles with opposite charge, and is the most sensitive test of $\mathrm{CPT}$ invariance for a baryon system. It is 40 times more accurate than our earlier comparison with many trapped antiprotons and protons, and is more than 45 000 times more accurate than earlier comparisons made with other techniques.

Dynamics of an unbalanced two-ion crystal in a Penning trap for application in optical mass spectrometry

2019

In this article, the dynamics of an unbalanced two-ion crystal comprising the 'target' and the 'sensor' ions confined in a Penning trap has been studied. First, the low amplitude regime is addressed. In this regime, the overall potential including the Coulomb repulsion between the ions can be considered harmonic and the axial, magnetron and reduced-cyclotron modes split up into the so-called 'stretch' and 'common' modes, that are generalizations of the well-known 'breathing' and 'center-of-mass' motions of a balanced crystal made of two ions. By measuring the frequency modes of the crystal and the sensor ion eigenfrequencies using optical detection, it will be possible to determine the targ…

High-precision atomic mass measurements for a CKM unitarity test

2013

Abstract The Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa (CKM) quark-mixing matrix describes the transformation of quarks from weak-force eigenstates to mass eigenstates. The most contributing element in this matrix is the up-down matrix element V ud , derived in most precise way from the nuclear beta decays and in particular, from decays having superallowed 0 +  → 0 + decay branch. What high-precision mass spectrometry community can offer are decay energies of such decays derived from parent–daughter mass differences, which are ideally, and in almost all cases, determined with Penning trap mass spectrometry directly from parent–daughter cyclotron frequency ratio. Typically frequency (and thus mass) ratios a…

Time-separated oscillatory fields for high-precision mass measurements on short-lived Al and Ca nuclides

2008

High-precision Penning trap mass measurements on the stable nuclide 27Al as well as on the short-lived radionuclides 26Al and 38,39Ca have been performed by use of radiofrequency excitation with time-separated oscillatory fields, i.e. Ramsey's method, as recently introduced for the excitation of the ion motion in a Penning trap, was applied. A comparison with the conventional method of a single continuous excitation demonstrates its advantage of up to ten times shorter measurements. The new mass values of 26,27Al clarify conflicting data in this specific mass region. In addition, the resulting mass values of the superallowed beta-emitter 38Ca as well as of the groundstate of the beta-emitte…

Model-independent determination of dissociation energies: method and applications

2003

A number of methods are available for the purpose of extracting dissociation energies of polyatomic particles. Many of these techniques relate the rate of disintegration at a known excitation energy to the value of the dissociation energy. However, such a determination is susceptible to systematic uncertainties, mainly due to the unknown thermal properties of the particles and the potential existence of 'dark' channels, such as radiative cooling. These problems can be avoided with a recently developed procedure, which applies energy-dependent reactions of the decay products as an uncalibrated thermometer. Thus, it allows a direct measurement of dissociation energies, without any assumption …

gFactor of HydrogenlikeSi13+28

2011

We determined the experimental value of the $g$ factor of the electron bound in hydrogenlike $^{28}\mathrm{Si}^{13+}$ by using a single ion confined in a cylindrical Penning trap. From the ratio of the ion's cyclotron frequency and the induced spin flip frequency, we obtain $g=1.995\text{ }348\text{ }958\text{ }7(5)(3)(8)$. It is in excellent agreement with the state-of-the-art theoretical value of 1.995 348 958 0(17), which includes QED contributions up to the two-loop level of the order of $(Z\ensuremath{\alpha}{)}^{2}$ and $(Z\ensuremath{\alpha}{)}^{4}$ and represents a stringent test of bound-state quantum electrodynamics calculations.
