Quantum-state-selective decay spectroscopy of 213Ra

An experimental scheme combining the mass resolving power of a Penning trap with contemporary decay spectroscopy has been established at GSI Darmstadt. The Universal Linear Accelerator (UNILAC) at GSI Darmstadt provided a 48Ca beam impinging on a thin 170Er target foil. Subsequent to velocity filtering of reaction products in the Separator for Heavy Ion reaction Products (SHIP), the nuclear ground state of the 5n evaporation channel 213Ra was mass-selected in SHIPTRAP, and the 213Ra ions were finally transferred into an array of silicon strip detectors surrounded by large composite germanium detectors. The Hoyo Oscuro section (Andara Massif, southeastern part of Picos de Europa) is a comparatively small exposure of Pennsylvanian syntectonic deposits that shown angular unconformity on the fairly extensive pre-tectonic carbonate platform strata of Pennsylvanian age accumulated in the distalmost realms of the Variscan foreland basin of the Cantabrian Zone. Fusuline-bearing strata from this section yielded species belonging to the genera P seudostaffella, Ozawainella, Fusulinella, Protriticites, Pseudotriticites, Fusulina and Quasifusulinoides ; one of these forms, Protriticites schulzei Villa, is described as a new species from the Cantabrian Mountains. Many structures produced under one single deformation regime, namely extensional, contractional or strike-slip, exhibit remarkable geometrical analogies when analysed at different scales. By contrast, field examples that illustrate the scale effects on structures resulting from superimposed deformations, which were produced under different tectonic regimes, are rare. Yet the change from contraction to extension is known to occur often in the most thickened portions of the continental crust. In the interpretation of his trained readers Sandro Penna has been the object of a great misunderstanding. For a long time his relationship with the greatest poetical works of his time has been hidden; it happened the same with the authors he could read during a long training. The most recent studies about Penna’s intertextuality focused on citations, limiting themselves to compiling a register, without considering the long duration of international cultural processes to which Penna himself refers. The name of Gabriele d’Annunzio is that of a certain actor among these processes, dealing above all with the poetics of symbol.
Trap-assisted studies of odd, neutron-rich isotopes from Tc to Pd

We review the present and future of trap-assisted structure studies of odd, neutron-rich Tc, Ru, Rh and Pd isotopes at the limits of present experimental techniques. These nuclei of refractory elements are produced in light-particle induced fission and filtered by their mass number with the IGISOL mass separator. Further mass separation with the JYFLTRAP Penning trap system provides a clean, monoisotopic beam perfectly suited for precise nuclear spectroscopy. Connecting the IGISOL and the JYFLTRAP facilities to the recently installed MCC30/15 cyclotron opens new prospects for post-trap spectroscopy of very exotic, neutron-rich nuclei. peerReviewed

While mass spectrometry in Paul traps serves well mainly for molecular analysis in chemistry, Penning traps provide high accuracy and precision. The technique is based on the fact that the ratio of cyclotron frequencies ω c = (Q/M)B of two ions in the same magnetic field B gives directly the ratio of their masses ω c(1)/ω c(2) = M(2)/M(1). If carbon-12 as the standard of the atomic mass scale is used as reference, the mass of the ion of interest is obtained directly in atomic units. Although the cyclotron frequency is not an eigenfrequency of the Penning trap, it can be obtained from combinations of ω+, ω, and ω z as evident from the set of equations (1.31)-(1.33).
