From Focused Thought to Reveries: A Memory System for a Conscious Robot

© 2018 Balkenius, Tjøstheim, Johansson and Gärdenfors. We introduce a memory model for robots that can account for many aspects of an inner world, ranging from object permanence, episodic memory, and planning to imagination and reveries. It is modeled after neurophysiological data and includes parts of the cerebral cortex together with models of arousal systems that are relevant for consciousness. The three central components are an identification network, a localization network, and a working memory network. Attention serves as the interface between the inner and the external world. Chemoreception allows animals to detect nutritive food and avoid toxic compounds. Volatile and non-volatile chemical compounds, which are detected by olfactory and gustatory sensory organs, can trigger feeding and reproductive behaviours in animals such as Drosophila melanogaster. Inside chemosensory organs, perireceptor proteins like odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) serve to transport odorant and tastant molecule to dedicated receptors. Harnessing stakeholder input on Twitter: A case study of short breaks in Spanish tourist cities

Abstract Knowledge of how destination marketing organisations (DMOs) use Twitter is still limited. This study aimed to assess how DMOs' Twitter activity affects hotel occupancy in short-break holidays. Key dimensions of Twitter that may affect hotel occupancy in tourist destinations were first identified. A longitudinal study using data for 10 Spanish DMOs was conducted to forecast hotel occupancy. Twitter application programming interfaces were used to gather data on tweets by DMOs and retweets and likes by users. (Pre)occupations: A data-driven model of jobs and its consequences for categorization and evaluation

Abstract We present a data-driven model of stereotypes about occupations (total N = 3919). Across two classification systems and national contexts (U.S.; Germany), we show remarkable convergence in the stereotype dimensions spontaneously employed to make sense of occupational groups (agency; progressiveness). Further studies show that these dimensions reflect presumed characteristics of job holders and not just describe their occupational role (Study 2), and that proximity of occupations on the emerging stereotype model increased superordinate categorization (Study 3) and contagious transfer of (positive and negative) valence from one occupation to another (Study 4). SIR—Older people with mobility limitations often report more barriers in their outdoor environment than people with intact mobility [1]. Prison officer students’ perceptions of persons convicted of sexual crimes

This study investigated the dimensionality of the Perception of Sex Offenders scale among prison officer students in Norway, and whether the students’ perceptions of this group of prisoners changed during their theoretical education and 1-year practical training. The target sample comprised a full cohort of freshman prison officer students, and two waves of data collection were conducted. The response rate was 94 percent ( n = 188) at time 1 (T1) and 64 percent ( n = 112) at time 2 (T2).
