Practitioners’ Perceptions of Co-Product Allocation Methods in Biorefinery Development—A Case Study of the Austrian Pulp and Paper Indust…

2022

The utilization of coproducts is a strategy that can be applied to increase the economic and environmental performance of industrial processes and thus reach an objective targeted in several environmental policies. In multi-output production processes, allocation needs to be performed to assess the products’ environmental and economic performance. It is crucial to choose an adequate allocation method, because this choice has been shown to strongly influence overall outcomes. Consequently, rash choices can lead to poor decision-making. Various ways to apply and combine allocation methods can be found in the academic literature, but it is often difficult to find sufficient guidance on how to …

Ambivalent Emotions in Music : We Like Sad Music When It Makes Us Happy

2013

We often react ambivalently to a piece of music, simultaneously experiencing both sadness and happiness, and attributing both emotions to the musical content. Two experiments were conducted (1) to empirically test for ambivalent emotions and (2) to investigate the amount of musical information necessary to elicit such emotions. In experiment 1, synthesized musical excerpts were manipulated in tempo (fast/slow) and mode (major/minor). By using unipolar scales, listeners could independently rate how (1) happy and (2) sad the music made them feel, as well as the (3) happiness and (4) sadness perceived in the music. Regarding perceived emotion, happiness was higher in major-fast excerpts, sadne…

Utilisation de la Dominance temporelle des sensations pour la caractérisation sensorielle des produits de la filière blé-farine-pain

2012

Eurogerm is specialized in flour correctors, bread improvers and technological ingredients for the wheat, flour and bread sector. The company gives great importance to sensory analysis as a diagnostic tool of finished products and has four expert panels; each panel is specialized in one category of products and is trained to standard sensory profiling. Today, in addition to the traditional method, Eurogerm wants to explore new methods in order to offer new services to its customers. This paper describes the development of Temporal Dominance of Sensations (TDS) created in the “Centre des Sciences du Goût et de l’Alimentation” (CSGA) (PINEAU et al., 2009). TDS provides information on the perc…

Le rappresentazioni del corpo "anaisthētos" nel "Corpus Hippocraticum": una 'via negativa' verso la conoscenza

2010

This paper seeks to investigate the medical representations and descriptions of ἀναισθησία as we find them in the Hippocratic Corpus. It represents an attempt to analyze both the cognitive and the physiological aspects of perception and, above all, its distortion and/or absence in Hippocratic medicine. The medical phenomenology of ἀναισθησία will be considered in respect to both its outcomes (inability to perceive the outside world; inability to perceive one's internal states), but also in the light of, and in connection with, other phenomena like the absence/suspension of phonation, disturbances of breathing, alteration of the body's motor functions, and insensibility to pain.

Differential memory persistence of odor mixture and components in newborn rabbits: competition between the whole and its parts

2014

Interacting with the mother during the daily nursing, newborn rabbits experience her body odour cues. In particular, the mammary pheromone (MP) contained in rabbit milk triggers the typical behaviour which helps to localize and seize the nipples. It also promotes the very rapid appetitive learning of simple or complex stimuli (odorants or mixtures) through associative conditioning. We previously showed that 24h after MP-induced conditioning to odorants A (ethyl isobutyrate) or B (ethyl maltol), newborn rabbits perceive the AB mixture in a weak configural way, i.e. they perceive the odour of the AB configuration in addition to the odours of the elements. Moreover, after conditioning to the m…

Parental Involvement in Math Homework: Links to Children’s Performance and Motivation

2017

The present study examined the longitudinal associations between children’s perceptions of parental involvement in math homework (control and support) and their math performance and motivation (taskpersistent homework behavior and math self-concept). Children (n = 512) reported their perceptions concerning parental involvement in sixthgrade math homework. In grades 3 and 6, children completed math tests, evaluated own math self-concept, and their mothers (n = 420) evaluated task persistence during homework. The results showed that low selfconcept in math predicted increased parental control, which in turn related to low math performance, task persistence, and math selfconcept. Second, perce…

The importance of the insular cortex for vestibular and spatial syndromes.

2020

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The aim of the study was to identify the neuroanatomical correlates and associations of neuropsychological syndromes after acute unilateral right-hemisphere brain lesions. The neuropsychological syndromes considered were orientation in three-dimensional space such as tilts of the subjective visual vertical or of the subjective haptic vertical, pusher syndrome, visual neglect and unawareness of paresis (anosognosia for hemiparesis). These neuropsychological phenomena have been found to occur separately or in different combinations after lesions to the right insular cortex. METHOD Magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained from 82 patients with acute right-hemispher…

Impact of information and in-home sensory exposure on liking and willingness to pay: The beginning of Fairtrade labeled coffee in France.

2015

This study was conducted to assess how the Fairtrade label interacts with the perception of intrinsic product characteristics on liking and purchase decisions and to estimate the evolution of this interaction after exposure to the coffees and/or exposure to ethical information. In a first session, 119 consumers gave liking scores for 2 regular and 2 Fairtrade coffees under a blind tasting condition. Then, they were asked to indicate the maximum price they would pay for each product in 2 auctions taking place under different information conditions. In the first auction, participants saw the packaging but did not taste the coffee; in the second auction, they could both taste the coffee and se…

Error. An inventive resource in drawings

2019

A scholarly research study into the issue of error as understood in the procedures of architectural representation. The study analysis the threefold realm of seeing/thinking/drawing using the speculations of the phenomenology of perception and poststructuralism. The study goes into the psychology by which, over time error has been removed from the ideology of "right architecture". Artistic movements of the avant-garde provide the best materials in terms of a positive use of empirical error.
