Gender in translating lesbianism in The Second Sex
2011
Drawing on three Chinese translations of the lesbian chapter in Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex, this paper examines at the micro level how the discussions on lesbianism in the work are translated and what role gender identity plays in the process of translation. Lesbianism has played an important part in feminism. However, homosexuality is still regarded as unacceptable to most Chinese people. Thus, an examination of translations of lesbianism in The Second Sex might be especially revealing in terms of representation of Western feminism. The comparison reveals that there are obvious differences between the translations by the female translators and the male translators. The differences…
Matt Kish’s “Every Page of Moby-Dick, Illustrated”: A Multimodal Approach
2016
Abstract The purpose of this essay is to address the multimodal nature of Matt Kish’s project Every Page of Moby-Dick, Illustrated, where Herman Melville’s 1851 masterpiece is set as paratext. Particular focus is set on the portrayals of Captain Achab, specifically “Page 153”, “Page 465” and “Page 469”. The basic theoretical framework has been offered by Alice Gibbons’ theorization of multimodal cognitive poetics and Sigrid Norris’ systematization of multimodal (inter)action. Useful insight has been lent by Sharon Cameron’s work on allegories of the body in Melville’s writing. The given analysis aims to pinpoint the elements of innovation in Kish’s work with respect to the canonical formal …

The project analyzed in this paper by the critical and digital redrawing is the House on Niegolewskiego Street of 1927–28, designed by Barbara Sokołowska for her and her husband, Stanislaw Brukalski, inspired by the Neoplasticism ideas, the paintings of Mondrian and De Stijl.
2013
Lope defended the usefulness of history presented on stage, that is, theatre’s function of preserving and creating a collective memory. In this article i will analyze the fundamental traits of those texts in relation to Lope’s desire to please his patrons and, at the same time, to participate in the making of a Spanish national identity, which intensified during the first years of king Philip IV’s reign through different media, among them painting and theatre. This paper ends reflecting …

Los Subalternos en las ficciones de apropiación de menores
2013
the rol of the subordinates in the appropriation of children during the Argentinian Dictatorship has been questioned in several disciplines. However, are the works of the writer Martín Kohan which have managed to tell the untold history in a very effective way by condensing it in the creation of a credible fictional world and, because of that, grinding. In Dos veces junio, as well as in Cuentas pendientes, the consequences of the banality of evil are obvious, since it represents the consensus set within the different levels of the repressive State machinery and glipmse the consequences of all this in the life of future generations.
