Different strategies for sports injury prevention in an America's Cup yachting crew.

2009

PURPOSE:: To analyze the effectiveness in reducing the number of sport injuries after application of different strategies of preventive physiotherapy during competition periods in an America's Cup yachting crew. METHODS:: A prospective physiotherapy intervention study during competition periods for three seasons was conducted on an America's Cup yachting race crew of 30 professional sailors. In the first two acts (2004), athletes did not receive any preventive physiotherapy. In the two acts celebrated in 2005, preventive intervention (phase 1) consisted of stretching exercises before the yacht race and preventative taping. During the four acts corresponding to the 2006 season, the physiothe…

Eye position tunes the contribution of allocentric and egocentric information to target localization in human goal-directed arm movements.

1997

Subjects were required to point to the distant vertex of the closed and the open configurations of the Muller-Lyer illusion using either their right hand (experiment 1) or their left hand (experiment 2). In both experiments the Muller-Lyer figures were horizontally presented either in the left or in the right hemispace and movements were executed using either foveal or peripheral vision of the target. According to the illusion effect, subjects undershot and overshot the vertex location of the closed and the open configuration, respectively. The illusion effect decreased when the target was fixated and when the stimulus was positioned in the right hemispace. These results confirm the hypothe…

Performance Analysis of Innovative Vacuum Insulation Panel

2013

Thermal insulation has become one of the central themes in energy behavior improvement. The use of insulating materials, from the thermal and hydrothermal aspect, allows the reduction of the heat transfer in each of the technical elements increasing their thermal inertia. Even if the research has led to the use of innovative materials with high values of thermal insulation, one of the main problems, which is difficult to resolve, is the thickness of the building envelope to reach levels of transmittance that can allow considerable savings of energy and CO2 emissions. With this objective the VIP (Vacuum Insulation Panel) technology in building applications is an innovative solution to obtain…

Effect of an exercise-based intervention on physical function of frail elderly patients with acute coronary syndrome

2021

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: Public grant(s) – National budget only. Main funding source(s): This work was supported by grants from CIBER CV, Madrid, Spain [grant number 16/11/00420] and Instituto de Salud Carlos III-FEDER, Madrid, Spain Background Frail elderly patients with cardiovascular diseases are vulnerable and more likely to experience physical function decline. Of the interventions that have shown some efficacy in the management of frailty, exercise is the only treatment found to consistently improve physical function. Since the number of older persons with cardiac diseases is gradually increasing, understanding how therapeutic exercise might be succes…

Physical function and frailty in elderly patients with acute coronary syndrome

2021

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: Public grant(s) – National budget only. Main funding source(s): This work was supported by grants from CIBER CV, Madrid, Spain [grant number 16/11/00420] and Instituto de Salud Carlos III-FEDER, Madrid, Spain. Background Frailty is described a complex clinical syndrome of increased vulnerability to stressors that places the individual at increased risk of adverse health outcomes. It results from multiple impairments (among others, in physical functioning) and its severity ranges from mild to severe. In older cardiac patients, frailty is reported to be a significant and an independent predictor of functional decline. Purpose To analy…

Aerosol Lidar Intercomparison in the Framework of SPALINET—The Spanish Lidar Network: Methodology and Results

2009

Abstract—A group of eight Spanish lidars was formed in order to extend the European Aerosol Research Lidar Network–Advanced Sustainable Observation System (EARLINET-ASOS)project. This study presents intercomparisons at the hardware and software levels. Results of the system intercomparisons are based on range-square-corrected signals in cases where the lidars viewed the same atmospheres. Comparisons were also made for aeros backscatter coefficients at 1064 nm (2 systems) and 532 nm (all systems), and for extinction coefficients at 532 nm (2 systems). In total, three field campaigns were carried out between 2006 and 2007. Comparisons were limited to the highest layer found before the free tr…

Comparison of UV and charged aerosol detection approach in pharmaceutical analysis of statins

2009

Abstract CAD (charged aerosol detector) has recently become a new alternative detection system in HPLC. This detection approach was applied in a new HPLC method for the determination of three of the major statins used in clinical treatment—simvastatin, lovastatin and atorvastatin. The method was optimized and the influence of individual parameters on CAD response and sensitivity was carefully studied. Chromatography was performed on a Zorbax Eclipse XDB C18 (4.6 mm × 75 mm, 3.5 μm), using acetonitrile and formic acid 0.1% as mobile phase. The detection was performed using both CAD (20 pA range) and DAD (diode array detector—238 nm) simultaneously connected in series. In terms of linearity, …

Children evoke similar affective and instructional responses from their teachers and mothers

2015

In the present study, we examined the extent to which the responses of teachers and mothers toward a particular child are similar in respect to their instructional support and affect, and whether child characteristics predict these responses. The data of 373 Finnish child–teacher–mother triads (178 girls, 195 boys) were analysed. Teachers and mothers reported their instructional support and affective responses toward a child in the school/homework context in Grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. At the beginning of Grade 1, the children’s performance in reading and math was tested, and teachers evaluated the children’s externalizing and internalizing problem behaviour. The results demonstrated that mothe…
