Background Alcohol intake is associated with oral diseases and bone changes including alveolar bone loss in humans and in experimental animals. The main aim of the present study is to assess the effect of long-term alcohol intake, at different frequencies, on periodontal bone loss (PBL) in adult rats. Material and Methods Thirty-six (36) rats were divided into 3 groups: Control (daily water intake, n=12), daily alcohol intake (20% ethanol, n=12), and social alcohol intake (20% ethanol twice a week, n=12). Widening of the inter-rectus distance (IRD) is highly prevalent among postpartum women and can lead to dysfunction of abdominopelvic muscles. The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in IRD and abdominopelvic function between nulliparous, primiparous and multiparous women. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 75 women (25 nulliparous, 25 primiparous and 25 multiparous at 6 months postpartum). Small airways in in sedentary and endurance-trained dystrophic (mdx) mice

The effects of mild endurance exercise training on the small airways in mdx mice are unknown. We compared epithelial thickness and turnover, apoptosis, and stress marker expression in small airways of mdx mice and wild-type (WT) controls, at rest and during exercise training. Mdx and WT mice were randomly assigned to sedentary (mdx-S, n=17; WT-S, n=19) or trained (mdx-EX, n=14; WT-EX, n=16) groups. Low-intensity endurance training (running on a wheel) was done 5 d/wk for 6 wk at progressively increasing speed (rpm from 16 to 24) and time (15 min to 1 h). The management of narrowing spinal fragments in the operative treatment of spinal fractures remains an open question, in particular when the procedure is performed by a posterior approach. This article describes the use of intraoperative ultrasonography during spinal surgery. From 1990 to 1997, 116 spinal fractures were treated operatively at our clinic. Stabilization of the spine was achieved with the AO fixateur interne and the AO USS, respectively (Synthes, D-79224, Umkirch, Germany). It is known that sphingomyelin (SM) content is higher in apolipoprotein B-containing particles (BLps) than in high density lipoproteins and that BLp levels, including chylomicrons and their remnant particles, are positively related to atherosclerosis. To evaluate the relationship between serum SM and postprandial remnant particle levels, we determined SM, triglyceride (TG), and cholesterol levels in serum and in remnant-like particles (RLPs) before and 3, 5, 7, and 10 h after a high-fat meal in 31 healthy subjects. Absorption of protein in the early postoperative period in chronic conscious dogs.

Postoperative alterations in amino acid exchange across the intestinal tract and in the capacity for protein absorption were investigated in a chronic canine model. Changes in postoperative splanchnic amino acid exchange consisted of a temporary decrease of total splanchnic amino acid release, including a significant reduction in alanine production, and an increase in glutamine consumption. Contrary to results under stable metabolic conditions, branched chain amino acids were also taken up by the intestine in the early postoperative period. Effects of Refrigeration on the Bactericidal Activity of Human Milk: A Preliminary Study

This study analyzed the bactericidal activity of human milk and how it is influenced by refrigerated storage. Nine samples of mature human milk were collected and divided into 3 aliquots. One was analyzed immediately, and the other 2 were refrigerated at 4 degrees C to 6 degrees C for 48 and 72 hours, respectively. All of the fresh samples exhibited bactericidal activity with an average value of 83.47% +/- 18.37%. Refrigeration for 48 hours did not cause significant modifications, whereas storage beyond 72 hours significantly lowered the degree of bacteriolysis versus fresh milk. Hypokalemia shortens relative refractory period of peripheral sensory nerves in man

Absolute and relative refractory periods and the sensory conduction velocity of the median and ulnar nerves were determined in six patients suffering from hypokalemia of various origins. Nerve impulse conduction and the absolute refractory period remained normal, but the relative refractory period was shortened to 1.7 to 2.6 ms at serum K+ levels from 1.6 to 2.9 mval/l. As compared with normal values this decrease was statistically significant.
