Dietary therapy and non-surgical periodontal treatment in obese patients with chronic periodontitis.

2018

Aim The effect of dietary weight loss intervention on periodontal therapy is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate whether weight loss improves the response of obese subjects to non-surgical periodontal treatment. Materials and methods This interventional study in obese patients was conducted at the University Hospital Dr. Peset (Valencia, Spain). Patients were divided into two groups with and without dietary therapy. All participants received non-surgical periodontal treatment. Periodontal, anthropometric and biochemical parameters were assessed at baseline and 12 weeks. Results A total of 78 patients were re-evaluated after intervention. All periodontal parameters improved in both grou…

A novel, fully digital approach to quantifying volume gain after soft tissue graft surgery. A pilot study

2020

Objective Measuring soft tissue thickness after mucogingival surgery has traditionally been performed by means of a calibrated transgingival probe. The main aim of this study was to apply a non-invasive technique based on digital images formatted as Standard Tessellation Language (STL) files to quantify soft tissue volume after connective tissue grafting. Clinical innovation report Ten patients who presented Cairo Class I gingival recession were selected for connective tissue grafting using the tunnel technique. In all patients, the initial position of the gingiva and quantity of keratinized tissue were recorded, and gingival recession was scanned with an intra-oral scanner. Six months afte…

Histological evaluation of maxillary sinus floor augmentation with recombinant human growth and differentiation factor-5-coated β-tricalcium phosphat…

2011

Stavropoulos A, Becker J, Capsius B, Acil Y, Wagner W, Terheyden H: Histological evaluation of maxillary sinus floor augmentation with recombinant human growth and differentiation factor-5-coated β-tricalcium phosphate: results of a multicenter randomized clinical trial. J Clin Periodontol 2011; 38: 966–974. doi: 10.1111/j.1600-051X.2011.01754.x. Abstract Objectives: The aim of this prospective, multicenter, randomized clinical trial was to evaluate histologically the outcome of maxillary sinus lift augmentation with a recombinant human growth and differentiation factor-5-coated β-tricalcium phosphate (rhGDF-5/β-TCP) or with a β-TCP and autogenous bone (β-TCP/AB) composite. Chronic periodontitis impairs polymorphonuclear leucocyte-endothelium cell interactions and oxidative stress in humans.

2018

Aim To evaluate the relationship between oxidative stress parameters in polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNs) and PMN-endothelial cell interactions in patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) according to different degrees of severity of the disease. Materials and methods For this cross-sectional study, 182 subjects were divided into four groups according to degree of CP: without CP (n = 37), mild CP (n = 59), moderate CP (n = 51), and severe CP (n = 35). We determined anthropometric and biochemical variables, periodontal parameters, inflammatory markers, oxidative stress parameters (superoxide and mitochondrial membrane potential), and PMN-endothelium cell interactions (rolling flux, velocit…

Diagnostic accuracy of clinical parameters to monitor peri-implant conditions: A matched case-control study

2018

International audience; Background: The aim of this case-control study was to estimate the diagnostic accuracy of the standard clinical parameters in diagnosing healthy peri-implant tissues, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis.Methods: A case-control study was designed to compare the clinical parameters used in the diagnosis of peri-implant diseases such as: probingdepth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), mucosal redness (MR), suppuration (SUP), and plaque index (PI). Furthermore, the influence of patient-(sex, age) and implant-related variables (implant neck configuration, time in function after loading) were evaluated to investigate the association with the clinical findings. The i…

Dentistry and internal medicine: from the focal infection theory to the periodontal medicine concept

2010

Abstract During past decades the relationship between dentistry and internal medicine and especially the concept of the so-called focal infection theory have long been a matter of debate. The pathogenesis of focal diseases has been classically attributed to dental pulp pathologies and periapical infections. Nonetheless, in recent years, their role is being dismissed while increasing interest is being devoted to the possible associations between periodontal infection and systemic diseases. In fact, periodontal pathogens and their products, as well as inflammatory mediators produced in periodontal tissues, might enter the bloodstream, causing systemic effects and/or contributing to systemic d…

Outcome measurements following palatal soft tissue graft harvesting: A review

2021

Background Free gingival graft (FGG) and connective tissue graft (CTG) are two of the most commonly techniques performed in periodontal and peri-implant plastic surgery. Although several outcome measurements have been proposed for evaluation of palatal wound healing and patient morbidity, a comprehensive review about these variables is lacking. The objective of this review is to present comprehensive information about outcome measurements related to postoperative palatal wound healing and postoperative patient-reported morbidity after FGG or CTG procedures. Material and methods An electronic search of English language dental literature in the Medline database via PubMed access was conducted…

Predictors of long-term outcomes in patients undergoing periodontal maintenance

2017

Abstract Aim This retrospective study aimed to characterize the baseline status of patients following periodontal maintenance, analysing the association between the long‐term outcome of these patients, smoking, bruxism, and the main clinical and radiographic variables. Material and methods A sample of 174 patients with moderate to severe periodontitis was refined into homogeneous subsamples according to smoking and bruxism and the rate of tooth loss due to periodontal disease (TLPD): 0, 1–2, and >2 teeth. The association and the distribution (χ² test) of the variables within the subsamples were analysed. Results Smoking and bruxism were significantly associated with higher TLPD rates. Verti…

The effects of antimicrobial sprays and mouthrinses on supragingival plaque regrowth: a comparative study.

2006

BACKGROUND: Due to the side effects of chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) mouthrinsing, a spray has been proposed as an alternative method of CHX delivery to the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to investigate the plaque inhibitory effects of CHX, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), and triclosan (TRN) delivered by sprays and mouthrinses. METHODS: The study was an observer-masked, randomized cross-over design balanced for carryover effects, involving 15 healthy volunteers in a 4-day plaque regrowth model. Products being tested (0.2% CHX, 0.12% CHX, 0.05% CPC, and 0.03% TRN) were used both as sprays and mouthrinses. A saline solution served as a negative control. On day 1, subjects received p…
