Calling behaviour of female Periplaneta americana: Behavioural analysis and identification of the pheromone source

Abstract The site for the production of Periplanone B, one of the components of the female sex pheromone of Periplaneta americana , was localized in glands situated in the genital atrium, and we have called these structures atrial glands. While emitting the sex pheromone, females adopt a characteristic calling posture during which time the atrial glands are exposed. Behavioural assays of males utilizing pentane extracts of various female body parts revealed that atrial gland extracts are highly attractive, and induced more wing-raising behaviour, than any other female body part. The structure of the thread-hairs on the cerci of the cockroach Periplaneta american during the intermoult phase has been investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The present study demonstrates that to each thread-hair belong one sensory cell, two glial cells, and three enveloping cells. American cockroach control assays in the municipal sewerage system of Valencia (Spain)

ABSTRACT Several insecticides (including different active substances and formulations) were applied to sewer shafts to control Periplaneta americana (LINNAEUS, 1758) populations in Valencia (eastern Spain). Results show that the best products for cockroach control were the paints (with and without insecticide), which provided an optimal reduction of P. americana populations for up to three months (P < 0.001). Therefore, it is important to note that the reduction of cockroach populations as well as the persistence of the insecticide effect in sewers was similar in both types of paints. Blattabacteria, the endosymbionts of cockroaches, have small genome sizes and high genome copy numbers.

Summary Blattabacteria are intracellular endosymbionts of cockroaches and primitive termites that belong to the class Flavobacteria and live only in specialized cells in the abdominal fat body of their hosts. In the present study we determined genome sizes as well as genome copy numbers for the endosymbionts of three cockroach species, Blattella germanica, Periplaneta americana and Blatta orientalis. The sole presence of blattabacteria in the fat body was demonstrated by rRNA-targeting techniques. The genome sizes of the three blattabacteria were determined by pulsed field gel electrophoresis. Characterization of a Ryanodine Receptor inPeriplaneta Americana

Specific binding sites for the alkaloid ryanodine were characterized in membrane preparations from sarcoplasmatic reticulum of Periplaneta americana skeletal muscle. Binding of [3H]ryanodine was optimal at pH 8 and at CaCl2 concentration of about 300 mumol l-1. The Ca-chelating agents EGTA (100 mumol l-1) and EDTA (100 mumol l-1) abolished 95% and 90% of the [3H]ryanodine binding respectively. Preincubation with Ca2+ (100 mumol l-1) restored the ryanodine binding in presence of up to 300 mumol l-1 EGTA. Wasp venom injected into the prey's brain modulates thoracic identified monoaminergic neurons.

The wasp Ampulex compressa injects a cocktail of neurotoxins into the brain of its cockroach prey to induce an enduring change in the execution of locomotory behaviors. Our hypothesis is that the venom injected into the brain indirectly alters the activity of monoaminergic neurons, thus changing the levels of monoamines that tune the central synapses of locomotory circuits. Blattabacterium cuenoti (Mercier 1906) strains Bge and Pam are the obligate primary endosymbionts of the cockroaches Blattella germanica and Periplaneta americana, respectively. Pathogenicity of intrathoracically administrated Bacillus thuringiensis spores in Blatta orientalis.

Abstract The ability of Bacillus thuringiensis to produce septicaemia in Periplaneta americana and Blatta orientalis has been investigated. Spores and crystals from several wild-type strains as well as spores of a B. thuringiensis crystal-deficient mutant, were first orally administrated at high doses, and no significant mortality was recorded. Intrathoracic injection of spore suspensions in P. americana revealed that this species is not very susceptible to B. thuringiensis spores.
