Investigations on the c-axis transport properties of YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-δ//PrBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-δ/ thin film superlattices

1997

In this paper we report on the c-axis transport properties of YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-/spl delta///PrBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-/spl delta// superlattices. We describe the preparation, characterisation and patterning of thin film superlattices into suitable mesa structures via standard photolithography. Resistive measurements were carried out which point towards an inhomogenous current distribution in the normal state resistance. Below T/sub c/, the c-axis properties determine the temperature dependent resistance. Resonant tunneling is observed with no Josephson current.

Dystroglycan in Skin and Cutaneous Cells: β-Subunit Is Shed from the Cell Surface

2004

In skin, hemidesmosomal protein complexes attach the epidermis to the dermis and are critical for stable connection of the basal epithelial cell cytoskeleton with the basement membrane (BM). In muscle, a similar supramolecular aggregate, the dystrophin glycoprotein complex links the inside of muscle cells with the BM. A component of the muscle complex, dystroglycan (DG), also occurs in epithelia. In this study, we characterized the expression and biochemical properties of authentic and recombinant DG in human skin and cutaneous cells in vitro. We show that DG is present at the epidermal BM zone, and it is produced by both keratinocytes and fibroblasts in vitro. The biosynthetic precursor is…

Attempts to re-colonise water insects in German brooks

2009

Attempts were made to reintroduce water insects (five stonefly species and one mayfly species) into several third order streams in Rhineland-Palatine and Hessen, Germany. All these streams had been strongly affected by waste water and rubbish and had lost most of their macroinvertebrates. As a consequence of the installation of several purification plants in the past three decades, water quality has improved. Since no stoneflies returned, 700–1300 eggs of three different species (Isoperla goertzi, I. oxylepis, and I. grammatica) were exposed in the Selz brook (1997). In February 1998 a few larvae and in 1999 about 10,000 eggs of Perla marginata were added in the Walluf brook, and in 1998, 5…

Proof of multilayer structural organization in self-assembled polycation-polyanion molecular films

1994

Abstract Multilayer organization of ultrathin polycation-polyanion self-assembled films is demonstrated using two approaches. (1) Fabrication of polyion superlattices with alternation of three different polyelectrolytes in (ABCB) n fashion, which gives rise to a Bragg peak in X-ray reflectivity. The spacing d=93.4 A corresponds to the repeat unit (ABCB) n . (2) Drying-induced manipulation of the film surface at regular intervals. Normally the layer-by-layer adsorption is carried out by keeping the film wet throughout all deposition cycles. Alternatively the film surface can be manipulated by gently drying the film in a stream of nitrogen or air after the adsorption of every layer. When the …

In a randomized trial in prostate cancer patients, dietary protein restriction modifies markers of leptin and insulin signaling in plasma extracellul…

2017

Obesity, metabolic syndrome, and hyperleptinemia are associated with aging and age-associated diseases including prostate cancer. One experimental approach to inhibit tumor growth is to reduce dietary protein intake and hence levels of circulating amino acids. Dietary protein restriction (PR) increases insulin sensitivity and suppresses prostate cancer cell tumor growth in animal models, providing a rationale for clinical trials. We sought to demonstrate that biomarkers derived from plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) reflect systemic leptin and insulin signaling and respond to dietary interventions. We studied plasma samples from men with prostate cancer awaiting prostatectomy who particip…

Serum leptin level as a diagnostic and prognostic marker in infectious diseases and sepsis: A comprehensive literature review.

2021

Abstract Background: Infections and sepsis are common causes of morbidity and mortality, with an increasing incidence worldwide. Leptin is involved in the inflammatory process and may modulate the cytokine production, immune cell proliferation and endothelial function. There are conflicting results regarding alterations of leptin levels in infectious diseases and the outcome from sepsis. The aim of the current article is to provide an overview of the medical literature on the correlations between variations of leptin levels and infectious diseases and sepsis. Methods: We performed an extensive literature search in PubMed and Google Scholar databases, using keywords to identify articles rela…

Self-Regulation and Link Selection Strategies in Hypertext

2010

This article explores the role of self-regulation in strategies that readers use to decide the order in which to read the different sections of a hypertext. This study explored 3 main strategies for link selection based on (a) link screen position, (b) link interest, and (c) the semantic relation of a link with the section just read. This study followed Winne's (1995, 2001) model of self-regulated learning to try to explain why some readers select hyperlinks based on strategies that lead to lower levels of comprehension (i.e., screen position and personal interest). Results from 2 studies revealed that readers with low prior knowledge base their decisions on what to read next on a default s…
