International audience; In this work, we hypothesized that the difference in the dielectric constant value existing between two non-miscible phases such as oil and water could be partially responsible for both protein unfolding and reorganization of the protein structure at the interface. So, we replaced the oil phase, whose dielectric constant value is 2, by organic solvents chosen for both their non-miscibility with water and their range of dielectric constant values higher (range 6.1-7.2) than that of oil. Dynamic properties of solvent confined in silica gels studied by broadband dielectric spectroscopy

Abstract We report the results of a broadband (10−2–107 Hz) dielectric spectroscopy study on a solvent system (glycerol–water solution) confined in a porous silica matrix. The dielectric relaxation of the system is studied as a function of both temperature (120–280 K) and solvent composition (0–36 glycerol molar percentage), at constant matrix composition. Our data show that glycerol–water systems confined inside silica gel are characterized by a very complex dynamics quite different from that observed in solution, thus indicating that confinement may deeply modify solvent dynamics. Infrared study of α–SiO2 single crystal under high pressure

We have measured high pressure α-quartz reflectance spectra in the mid infrared. We used single crystals, taking full profit of polarization. The quality of the spectra allows fitting the reflectance spectra. We have characterized the pressure evolution of E and A2 modes with increased precision, even in the spectral regions where they overlap. In addition, we have determined the TO-LO splitting of each mode. Some of the A2 modes show dramatic pressure variations of the LO-TO splitting, which cannot be explained only by changes in length and ionicity of individual bonds, requiring a new mechanism. Dielectric characterization and ionic conductivity of α-LiIO3 crystals related to the growth conditions

Abstract The dielectric response of α-LiIO3 has been studied at room temperature between 20 Hz and 1 MHz with various types of electrodes and compared to the results in the literature. By changing the sample thickness, a relaxation of space charges is clearly identified and the bulk ionic conductivity is deduced from the admittance diagram. Finally a comparison is carried out between chromium doped and undoped crystals obtained from acid and neutral growth solutions.

Dielectric spectroscopy and molecular dynamics of methylene chloride CH2Cl2

Abstract Precise measurements of the complex permittivity of methylene chloride (CH 2 Cl 2 ) at 293 K have been made at frequencies in the range 50–310 GHz. These, when combined with earlier results, have made possible a determination of the complex permittivity over the entire zero to THz frequency region. These results show a distribution of dielectric relaxation times. The value of the Cole-Cole distribution parameter, α, was 0.03 and that of the relaxation time, τ, was 2.07 ps. Reference-Plane Invariant Method for Measuring Electromagnetic Parameters of Materials

This paper presents a simple and effective wideband method for the determination of material properties, such as the complex index of refraction and the complex permittivity and permeability. The method is explicit (non-iterative) and reference-plane invariant: it uses a certain combination of scattering parameters in conjunction with group-velocity data. This technique can be used to characterize both dielectric and magnetic materials. Pressure dependence of the low-frequency dielectric constant of KNbO_3

The effect of pressure on the low-frequency dielectric constant, $\epsilon_0$, of single crystals of KNbO_3 is investigated by means of capacitance measurements. The dielectric constant increases with pressure up to 22.5 kbar, where it exhibits a large value ($\epsilon_0$ = 5000), and then decreases. This change in its behaviour is related to a phase transition induced by pressure. On decompression, the samples do not revert back to the ambient pressure phase.
