Anomalous Fluctuations of Nematic Order in Solutions of Semiflexible Polymers

The nematic ordering in semiflexible polymers with contour length $L$ exceeding their persistence length $\ell_p$ is described by a confinement of the polymers in a cylinder of radius $r_{eff}$ much larger than the radius $r_\rho$, expected from the respective concentration of the solution. Large scale Molecular Dynamics simulations combined with Density Functional Theory are used to locate the Isotropic-Nematic ($I-N$)-transition and to validate this cylindrical confinement. Temporal and spatial persistence of combustion fronts in paper

The spatial and temporal persistence, or first-return distributions are measured for slow-combustion fronts in paper. The stationary temporal and (perhaps less convincingly) spatial persistence exponents agree with the predictions based on the front dynamics, which asymptotically belongs to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. The stationary short-range and the transient behavior of the fronts are non-Markovian, and the observed persistence properties thus do not agree with the predictions based on Markovian theory. This deviation is a consequence of additional time and length scales, related to the crossovers to the asymptotic coarse-grained behavior. Peer reviewed

Linear Dimensions of Adsorbed Semiflexible Polymers: What can be learned about their persistence length?

Conformations of partially or fully adsorbed semiflexible polymer chains are studied varying both contour length $L$, chain stiffness, $\ensuremath{\kappa}$, and the strength of the adsorption potential over a wide range. Molecular dynamics simulations show that partially adsorbed chains (with ``tails,'' surface attached ``trains,'' and ``loops'') are not described by the Kratky-Porod wormlike chain model. The crossover of the persistence length from its three-dimensional value (${\ensuremath{\ell}}_{p}$) to the enhanced value in two dimensions ($2{\ensuremath{\ell}}_{p}$) is analyzed, and excluded volume effects are identified for $L\ensuremath{\gg}{\ensuremath{\ell}}_{p}$. Hygienic characteristics of radishes grown in soil contaminated with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia

Background: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a plant growth-promoter. This bacterium is also implicated in human diseases. Thus, after the use of this bacterium in agriculture, the safety of the final products has to be verified. Due to the ubiquitous presence of S. maltophilia in soil, in this study a massive contamination was simulated to evaluate the growth and safety of Raphanus sativus L.. Results: Different inoculums and soil treatment conditions were tested. Conformations, Transverse Fluctuations and Crossover Dynamics of a Semi-Flexible Chain in Two Dimensions

We present a unified scaling description for the dynamics of monomers of a semiflexible chain under good solvent condition in the free draining limit. We consider both the cases where the contour length $L$ is comparable to the persistence length $\ell_p$ and the case $L\gg \ell_p$. Our theory captures the early time monomer dynamics of a stiff chain characterized by $t^{3/4}$ dependence for the mean square displacement(MSD) of the monomers, but predicts a first crossover to the Rouse regime of $t^{2\nu/{1+2\nu}}$ for $\tau_1 \sim \ell_p^3$, and a second crossover to the purely diffusive dynamics for the entire chain at $\tau_2 \sim L^{5/2}$. Forest management has altered forested environments and provoked stress to many natural habitats and biodiversity. The goal of biodiversity management is the long-term persistence of populations in human-modified environments. Persistence of both reversible airway obstruction and higher blood eosinophils may predict lung function decline in severe asthma.

Objective: This study analysed whether the persistence of both reversible airway obstruction (RAO) and elevated BE counts was associated to reduced asthma control and accelerated lung function decline in treated severe asthmatics. Methods: About 202 severe asthmatics were studied after 12–120 months of step-5 treatment associated to anti-IgE therapy. Following treatments, reversibility tests, after inhaling 400 mcg of Salbutamol, were performed. FEV1 > 12% or ≤12% changes differentiated RAO+ from RAO− subjects. Assessment wine aroma persistence by using an in vivo PTR-ToF-MS approach and its relationship with salivary parameters

To better understand wine aroma persistence, the nasal cavity of nine volunteers was monitored by Proton Transfer Reaction-Time of Flight-Mass Spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) after they rinsed their mouths with three rosé wines (one control and the same wine supplemented with two tannin extracts) during four minutes. Wines were aromatised with a mixture of five target aroma compounds. Results showed that wine aroma persistence was highly compound-dependent: while esters disappeared very fast, other compounds such as linalool remained in the oral cavity for longer times after wine expectoration.
