Student teachers’ ways of experiencing the teaching of health education
2010
The aim of this phenomenographic study was to identify student teachers’ ways of experiencing the teaching of health education, and to determine the aspects that are educationally critical in gaining a deeper understanding of the teaching. Qualitative data (written essays, semi‐structured interviews) were gathered twice during health education teacher training. Teaching was seen as transferring knowledge and skills, supporting the active processing of knowledge, supporting transformation of conceptions, supporting holistic personal growth and building a learning community with the students. The teaching was reflected through five themes: the nature of the knowledge, the source of the knowle…
Bridging human and machine learning for the needs of collective intelligence development
2020
There are no doubts that artificial and human intelligence enhance and complement each other. They are stronger together as a team of Collective (Collaborative) Intelligence. Both require training for personal development and high performance. However, the approaches to training (human vs. machine learning) are traditionally very different. If one needs efficient hybrid collective intelligence team, e.g. for managing processes within the Industry 4.0, then all the team members have to learn together. In this paper we point out the need for bridging the gap between the human and machine learning, so that some approaches used in machine learning will be useful for humans and vice-versa, some …

Young athletes’ significant experiences in sport : critical sociological reflections on athlete development
2017
AbstractThe aim of this article is to provide a sociological perspective on athlete development by using the theoretical framework of socialization and life course. The research data, which were collected at a sports upper secondary school, consist of life historical interviews with 26 young athletes aged 14–17 years. Through content analysis, their significant experiences in sports were divided into four categories and then analyzed further in relation to the Habermasian dualistic reality of the lifeworld and the system. The project launched on September 1, 2019. The study population was grade 7a of Cēsis Secondary School enrolled in extra physical education classes. To attain the main aim of dual career of combinin…
Three Approaches to School Health Education as a Means to Higher Levels of Health Literacy
2014
It is widely acknowledged that school health education is an important means for supporting the development of pupils’ health literacy. A growing number of papers have described or suggested a variety of classroom-based and whole-school practices for developing health literacy. However, few of these papers have systematically addressed the various ways of approaching health education in schools or sought to analyze how these approaches differ from each other. This paper aims to do this. It does so by representing three approaches to school health education: the facts and skills approach, the individual thinking approach, and the personal growth and citizenship approach. The approaches diffe…
Effects of Mobility Programmes on University Students' Academic Performance
2018
The number of students participating in mobility programmes has increased enormously over the years. The reasons are diverse and may range from personal growth to better employability prospects, together with improvement in foreign language skills and intercultural awareness. Mobility programmes receive generous funding from the European Commission, therefore their outcomes should be measured and evaluated. This paper focuses on a specific one: the academic effects of mobility programmes. We analyse whether there is an improvement in the academic performance of the students who participate in mobility programmes and, if this is the case, whether it is sustained over time. We use a broad dat…
THEORETICAL CONCEPT OF LEARNING PROCESS IN FOLK HIGH SCHOOL
2015

Folk high schools during last 160 years have been known for being unique nonformal education institutions with their own philosophical conception established by Danish philosopher N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872). Founded as national consciousness and Danish culture supportive institutions, folk high schools in short time became centres of democracy. The main ideas of these conception – „living word”, „enlightenment”, „enliving”, „school for life”, „personal development” – have made these institutions as providers of personal enlightenment, development and self-realization, where students enlived their transformations through dimensions of body, feelings and mind.
