‘More homework for me, too’. Meanings of differentiation constructed by elementary-aged students in classroom interaction
2012
Although the necessary role of differentiation in special education is well established in the literature, little is known about its social and peer interaction implications from the student perspective. The present qualitative study aims at offering detailed observational analyses of the meanings that 7- to 9-year-old students give to differentiated instruction in its initial phases in authentic classroom activities. The results were yielded from an ethno–methodological conversation analysis of the video-recordings of authentic classroom situations in a part-time Finnish special education setting (N = 12 lessons). The results revealed that whilst differentiation as a pedagogical solution s…
(Un)Natural and contractual international society: A conceptual inquiry
2011
This article offers a critical perspective on one of the central concepts of IR and the English School of IR in particular, namely the concept of international society. It argues that the moral agency of international society and its ‘naturalness’ were affirmed simultaneously with the marginalization of the concept of societas designating contractual political relations. The article traces the concept of contracted societas back to the work of Hugo Grotius, an acclaimed founder of the ‘international society’ tradition. By placing Grotius’ use of the concept in the context of ancient and early modern discussion of political alliances and partnerships, it demonstrates that politically contra…
Cross-border virtual teams, as seen from applied psychology & applied economy perspective. A Case study of a cross-cultural teaching program
2018
As communication becomes easier with the proliferation of ICT (Internet Communication Technology), more companies and individuals face the need and challenge of creating and facilitating virtual teams. Those are groups of people that contact each other only by the means of the internet, with no real-world physical face-to-face contact. Despite the numerous benefits, as low-to-non monetary costs and enormous creation flexibility, there are also many (psychological) risks, often not apparent from the outside. In the current paper we discuss the teaching program that was designed to foster virtual communication skills. We describe a project conducted simultaneously between Palacký University (…
Predictors of enhancing human physical attractiveness: Data from 93 countries
2022
People across the world and throughout history have gone to great lengths to enhance their physical appearance. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. We also test hypotheses drawn from other influential and non-mutually exclusive theoretical frameworks, from biosocial role theory to a cultural media perspective. Survey data from 93,158 human participants across 93 countries provide evidence that behaviors such as a…
The Kid Selfie as Self-Inscription: Reinventing an Emerging Media Practice
2018
Adopting a media-archaeological perspective, Alexandra Schneider and Wanda Strauven suggest putting the kid selfie in relation to different intertwining genealogies of writing (-graphy) practices, which are all centered around the idea of “inscription”—a notion borrowed from James Lastra’s study of nineteenth-century sound technologies. In particular, the authors look at selfie videos made by young children with all kinds of portable media devices, connecting their playful activity to older art and media practices, such as drawing and sound recording. The kid selfie, Schneider and Strauven argue, can be understood as a way of reinventing the adult selfie, which is in itself still a rather n…

Toda disciplina científica que pretenda formar una concepción integrada de la realidad, y por consiguiente, del objeto de estudio que aborda, debe nutrirse de propuestas teóricas y epistemológicas diversas. CSR in Germany: A European Perspective
2020
The chapter starts with a short discussion of the roots of CSR and then analyzes the role of CSR within the European Union. Subsequently, it focuses on CSR in Germany and contends that hardly any independent CSR movement emerged in the country. Instead, Germany mainly adopted impulses from the international and European discussion which were integrated in the already existing social systems and institutions.

2015

The former include stunted social and family networks, the lack of economic resources, the existence of children and the absence of institutional resources. In other words, obstacles related to the social structure. The latter refer to the normalizati…

The temporal dimension in the understanding of maternal sensitivity in caregiver-infant interactions: The 'Early Mother-Child Interaction Coding Syst…
2021
Abstract Caregiver-child interaction is known to play a central role in children’s socioemotional development, yet the diversity of measures commonly used to evaluate it call into question the nature of the construct being assessed. Contingency within caregiver-child interactions has been identified as a key dyadic process that requires taking a temporal perspective to evaluating interactions. The Early Mother-Child Interaction Coding System is a psychometrically sound measure that sequentially code the flow of interactive and non-interactive behaviours within a caregiver-infant system. Its use of the framework of nonlinear dynamical systems (NDS) expands our understanding of contingent car…
