Interpreting the Sustainable Development Goals through the Perspectives of Utopia and Governance

2021

The article analyses the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the perspective of their self-understanding of political sense expressed in key SDG documents, including both UN documents and reports produced by individual countries. Utopia and governance are presented as ideal-typical approaches and analytical tools for qualitative content analysis. This approach is argued to be particularly illuminating in the case of politics of international development, as international development is simultaneously highly utopian and deeply embedded in rationalities of governance. As this analytical framework is applied to the SDGs, it is shown that their utopian pronouncements are related to the id…

A Composition Approach to Design of Educational Animations

2017

International audience; The educational effectiveness of conventionally designed animations that portray complex, unfamiliar subject matter in a behaviorally realistic fashion too often falls well short of expectations. Previous research indicates that the veridical dynamic properties of these comprehensive animations make a major contribution to their lack of effectiveness. Due to these dynamics, there is a substantial mismatch between the processing demands these animations impose on learners and the characteristics of the human information processing system. As a result, the quality of the mental models that learners are able to construct is compromised. Interventions intended to improve…

Is It Possible to Predict an Athlete’s Behavior? The Use of Polar Coordinates to Identify Key Patterns in Taekwondo

2019

Elite sport psychologists help athletes develop planned competition strategies from a technical-tactical perspective, through the observation and analysis of previous performances. The aim of this study was to analyze the behavioral patterns used to score points in the 2012 London Olympic Games, by using a mixed observational methodology through a polar coordinate analysis. This analysis is a representation made into four quadrants of the relationships found between focal behavior [i.e., giving score points, (SC)] and conditioned behaviors considered as key factors in taekwondo, occurring before and after the focal behavior (i.e., retrospective/prospective behavior as indicated for each qua…

Reward-Based Crowdfunding Research and Practice

2020

AbstractThis chapter offers a review of reward-based crowdfunding. Based on a concrete framework, this chapter extensively explains the definition, mechanisms, and unique aspects of reward-based crowdfunding. To better understand the status of reward-based crowdfunding from a global perspective, the development and regional characteristics of it in different crowdfunding markets are presented and discussed in this chapter. In addition, through a comprehensive literature review of key reward-based crowdfunding research, two main research streams of reward-based crowdfunding (success drivers and contributor behaviour) are summarized. Lastly, this chapter also sheds light on the implications o…

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RESOURCE BASED FIRM BETWEEN VALUE APPROPRIATION AND VALUE CREATION

2005

Various authors have brought forth the idea that the increase in context turbulence and the relentless change in today’s economic and competitive environments have rendered it essential for an effective firm strategy to combine both value appropriation and value creation (Porter, (1996); Moran & Ghoshal, (1999); Venkataraman & Sarasvathy, (2001); Hitt et al., (2001b). Nonetheless, the methodological bases and the assumptions that characterize contributions concerning value appropriation and value creation are notably different and in many respects opposite to one another. These profound methodological differences hinder the possibility of a combined consideration of value appropriation and …

Introducing a strategic perspective in lean thinking applications through system dynamics modelling: the dynamic Value Stream Map

2020

PurposeLean Thinking is an operation management discipline which aims to identify, map and analyse the activities forming a process to detect “value waste” and outline the most effective flow of activities to execute in sequence. Process mapping is often developed in lean projects through the use of the Value Stream Map (VSM). Like many other management tools, the VSM adopts a static and non-systemic perspective in the representation of an organizational process. This may result in the implementation of Lean projects inconsistent with the overall organizational long-term strategy, thus leading to dysfunctional performance. In order to overcome this limit, the paper suggests combining VSM wi…

Wartość poznawcza sztuki filmowej. Implikacje Stanisława Lema filozofii literatury

2018

The cognitive value of film art. The implications of Stanisław Lem’s philosophy of literatureSince the mid-twentieth century, audiovisuality has taken over the means of communication. Progress in technology has contributed to the dynamic development of media such as film and television. Today we can safely admit that life is under the pressure of audiovisual media. The film is an element of common experience, part of everyday life. The question is whether it is also cognitively valuable? Can a movie be a model that helps you to know yourself, your place in the world, relationships with others? And if so, how much can you trust such knowledge? The aim of this article is to reflect on the cog…

A behavioural reasoning perspective on the consumption of local food. A study on REKO, a social media-based local food distribution system

2021

Consumption of local food is increasing due to its convenience and multiple perceived benefits. However, the factors shaping consumer attitude towards local food and brand love for local food have received limited academic attention. The study thus investigates the under-explored concept of self-identity, attitude towards local food, and brand love, along with contextual variables with respect to local food consumption. Behavioural Reasoning Theory (BRT) is adopted as the theoretical frame in which self-identity is utilised as value, supporting the environment and positive product perception about the food sold by REKO are the reasons for choosing local food, and negative product perception…

The Effect of Negative Electronic Word of Mouth on Switching Intentions: A Social Interaction Utility Approach

2016

The aim of this chapter is to gain insight on negative eWom about brands from a sender perspective, taking into account individual and social factors. We develop and test a conceptual model using a sample of 302 Spanish active users of social networks who have complained online in 2013. This study provides several theoretical implications. Firstly, using the Social Interaction Utility framework, we analyse the influence of social motivations on negative eWom. Our results show that social motivations are the primary antecedents leading consumers to communicate their negative experiences to other consumers. Successful network sites should identify the effect of social motivations and manage t…
